The Senate Committee on Public Accounts has issued a warrant of arrest for former NNPCL GCEO Mele Kyari after he failed to appear before lawmakers investigating an alleged unaccounted ₦210 trillion said to have occurred between 2017 and 2023.
Former NNPCL CFO Umar Ajiya Isa dismissed the allegation, stating that no funds are missing and that the company’s total revenue for the period was ₦54.5 trillion, making the ₦210 trillion claim impossible. He also rejected reports that ₦5.8 billion was spent on registering NNPC Limited, calling the claims false and damaging to Nigeria’s reputation.
Kyari’s absence triggered a heated debate. While some senators argued he should be given more time due to reports he is receiving medical treatment in Germany, others insisted there was no documented evidence, pushing for immediate action. After a voice vote, Committee Chairman Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo ruled:
“Wherever Mele Kyari is, he should be arrested and brought before this committee.”
Ajiya warned that misinformation harms national interests, citing how false claims previously disrupted Chinese financing for the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano Gas Pipeline. He urged agencies like the NFIU and EFCC to verify allegations so Nigerians can rely on accurate information.
The committee has directed Ajiya and former Chief Upstream Investment Officer Bala Wunti to reappear in two weeks as the NNPCL audit query investigation continues.
