The House of Representatives has approved the Constitution Alteration Bill, 2026, to pave the way for state police in Nigeria.
The bill, presented by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, was passed during Thursday’s plenary after clause-by-clause consideration.

Lawmakers say the move is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security system to better tackle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other crimes.
Kalu described it as a major step toward building a modern and accountable state police structure.
