The ruling was delivered on Thursday, July 23, 2026, by Justice Salim Ibrahim.
The convicted men are Abdulrazak Umar, Yunusa Musa, and Shamsudin Sani. All three pleaded guilty to being members of Darul Salam, an affiliate of the proscribed terrorist group Ansaru. Abdulrazak Umar and Shamsudin Sani also admitted to using a WhatsApp group titled “The Oneness of Allah is the Foundation of Peace” to provide training and incite others. Abdulrazak Umar further pleaded guilty to illegal gold mining in the Chaza area of Suleja, Niger State.
The Federal Government had charged the trio over their involvement in the kidnapping of school children and teachers in Oriire between January and May 2026. While they pleaded not guilty to some of the charges, the court said the life sentence will start from the date of their arrest.
During sentencing, the defendants’ lawyer asked for leniency, saying they were first-time offenders and had shown remorse. He also noted that the men are married with children and aged parents who depend on them. However, the prosecution argued that the men knew what was happening and should have reported it to authorities instead.
