Chronicle Of A Person Living With A Positive Status

One thing I will always speak against is hiding your HIV status from your partner. You may choose to keep it from everyone else, but not from the person you are building a life with.

During one of the meetings I attended, a woman shared how her husband eventually found out about her status, and it was in the most painful way.
She had been receiving treatment at a particular hospital. Unknown to her, one of her husband's ex-girlfriends worked there. As we all know, some exes never really move on and still keep tabs on their former partners.
The ex discovered that the woman was living with HIV. Instead of respecting her privacy, she violated hospital ethics by taking pictures of her medical records and sending them directly to the husband. By then, the woman was already pregnant.
According to her, her husband had left this ex to marry her. The ex had apparently tested negative herself and decided to use the wife's status as a weapon to hurt him.
The husband did not confront his wife immediately. He kept the evidence to himself because she was pregnant and he didn't want to create more stress during the pregnancy.
Everything came to light after she gave birth.
He called his wife and her mother, who had come for omugwo, and asked them to sit down for a discussion. She said she honestly thought her marriage had ended that day.
Her husband was devastated. Her mother, who had no idea about her daughter's status, broke down in tears. They both pleaded with him for forgiveness.

Thankfully, after some time, he chose to forgive her. Today, they are still together.
She had to change hospitals because of what the ex did. Her husband also warned the ex that if he heard of her sharing his wife's medical information again, he would report her because he had enough evidence of her breach of confidentiality.

Unfortunately, the damage had already been done.
The ex had already shared the same medical records with some of the husband's friends. Some of them stopped visiting their home. They couldn't completely cut ties with him because he was the most successful among them and was always helping them financially. Still, she noticed the silent stares whenever they met. She could feel the distance, especially from some of their wives, who avoided her.

Years later, many of those same women now seek her friendship. They have watched her live a healthy life. They have seen that she isn't sickly as they imagined. In fact, she looks even more beautiful, healthy, and radiant. She said the husband even did big wedding for her 5 years later when she already had 3 children.

Her husband also never gave anyone the opportunity to disrespect her. Even some of the family members who initially opposed the marriage have gradually changed their attitude after some years

Her story is a powerful reminder that secrets have a way of coming out. When they do, the pain often comes not just from the secret itself, but from the broken trust.
If you are living with HIV and you're in a serious relationship, honesty may be difficult, but it is far better than allowing someone else to tell your story for you.

  1. Big secrets do have a way of coming out. It’s so good that they did not let that moment destroy their life. That unfortunate incident showed the onlookers what love, fidelity, and loyalty looks like. People are more than their health status.
