The Anambra State Government on Wednesday escalated its dispute with former governor Peter Obi over the state’s financial inheritance. It put the balance of eight external loans it says were contracted under his administration at N127.4 billion as of June 30, 2026. The government also disputed Obi’s claim that he left about N2.1 billion in an ecological fund account for his successor.

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday granted an application by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, to serve court documents on President Bola Tinubu through the All Progressives Congress, APC. Justice Inyang Ekwo granted the request while ruling on an ex-parte motion filed by Atiku’s counsel, O.T. Omotayo-Ojo, seeking an order for substituted service of the processes on the President.

The Department of State Services will today, Thursday, re-arraign five suspected members of the Ansaru terrorist group over their alleged involvement in the May 15,2026 abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State and the subsequent killing of two of the victims.
The suspects are to be re-arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja on a six-count amended charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/438/2026.

The death toll from the consumption of a suspected poisonous herbal drink in Ondo State has risen to 49, with about 170 people reportedly affected by the health crisis. The incident, which was initially reported in Araromi-Obu and Odigbo communities in the Odigbo Local Government Area, has also spread to the Irele Local Government Area, where eight deaths have been reported.

The Presidency on Wednesday challenged the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, Mr Peter Obi, to make good his threat to quit the 2027 presidential race if claims that he left Anambra State without outstanding debts and financial liabilities were proved wrong. Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, threw down the challenge in a brief comment on his verified X handle, following fresh claims by the Anambra State Government that liabilities dating back to Obi’s tenure as governor remained outstanding.

Kenya will make history as the first African country to host the World Athletics Championships after winning the bid for the 2029 edition.
The event will take place in Nairobi at the 48,000-capacity Kasarani Stadium.
Kenya’s strong athletics record, particularly in middle- and long-distance running, played a key role in its successful bid.
London and Rome also bid to host the 2029 championships, while Munich was selected to host the 2031 edition.

Cross River State Police have arrested 60 people linked to an attack on one of their officers at Watt Market in Calabar. A video of the incident spread quickly online. It showed people holding a police officer and created the impression that market women had grabbed him while he chased a suspected internet fraudster and scattered some goods. Police say that version of events is not accurate.
According to the police statement, the trouble started when the officer tried to seize a motorcycle. The rider had earlier stepped on the officer’s leg while he was on duty. Some roadside traders then confronted the officer, attacked him, tore his uniform and shoes, interfered with his riot gun, and took his Samsung phone. The officer also said pepper and egg were poured on him. The motorcycle was forced away so the rider could escape.
A member of the public called the police for help. Officers from Atakpa Police Division arrived, rescued their colleague, and took him to the station. The Commissioner of Police, Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, ordered a full investigation and directed that anyone involved should be arrested and charged.
On Wednesday, reinforced teams that included the Violence Crime Response Unit moved into the area and arrested 60 suspects. Those people are now being screened and questioned. Police say they are still looking for others who may have taken part.
The command reports that calm has returned to Watt Market. They have asked the public to rely only on official information and not on unverified social media claims.

At least eight passengers are feared to have drowned after two speedboats collided near Tikoro, Cameroon, on September 6, 2026.
One of the boats was carrying 13 Nigerians from Ikang, Cross River State, to Cameroon when it collided with another speedboat in Cameroonian waters.
Five passengers were rescued with help from local fishermen, while eight others reportedly drowned. Their bodies were later recovered and taken to Simon Beach in Ikang.
The Cross River State Police said the Marine Police are working to identify the bodies and investigate the cause of the accident. Further details will be released as they become available.
