Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji Ojo announced the committee after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed a full, transparent and unhindered investigation into the incident, which occurred on Thursday, 17 September 2026. The Minister also ordered the suspension of all officers connected to the case pending the outcome of the probe.
Calling the deaths deeply disturbing, the Minister said the government owes the families and the public a clear account of what happened. The committee is expected to identify the deceased, examine their arrest and detention, and determine the cause and circumstances of their deaths. It will also establish responsibility, negligence or misconduct, recommend sanctions, compensation where necessary, and propose measures to prevent a recurrence.
The Minister instructed the NSCDC leadership to cooperate fully and preserve all records and evidence. He warned that any attempt to conceal evidence, intimidate witnesses or obstruct the investigation will be treated as a serious offence.
Committee members include: Jonathan Kure (Chairman), Prof Isa Hayatu Chiroma (Secretary), AIG Hosea Karma (retired), Prof Olayinka Buhari, representatives of the Minna Emirate Council and Niger State Government, Alhaji Liman Sulaiman, Deji Adeyanju, Zainab Suleiman Okino, and Dr George Agbakahi. The committee may co opt experts and has two weeks to submit its report.

We don’t ever get to hear the result of the probing and investigations, we only read and hear of the order given.

ARREST and DETAIN all the suspected NSCDC officers involved and charge them to court.
Hope the investigation will not be swept under the carpet
