Actress Omotola Ekeinde Says Nigerians Have Turned Begging To A Culture

Veteran Nigerian actress, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has criticised the entitlement mentality of the Nigerian society, lamenting that the country now has a culture of begging.

Speaking in a recent episode of Activating Success With Love Idoko, the movie icon said she doesn’t support or encourage begging in any form except if it is a life-and-death situation.

According to her, there is no reason anyone can’t work.
She said, “A lot of Nigerians take opportunities for granted. And one thing we have to understand is that nobody owes you anything. Nigerians now have a culture of begging.
“I don’t support or encourage begging. I believe that there is no reason why anybody can’t work. There is something you can do. There is a kind of value you can bring to humanity.
“Everybody has needs, including me. There are some needs I have that if I was entitled I would go and beg certain people.
“So, don’t feel like because you don’t have money like me, you are the only one who has a reason to beg. At every level, we all have needs. But we are all struggling through it. Even if you have to beg, it should be a life-and-death situation.”
“Try as much as you can not to beg and be a nuisance. Begging reduces your own self-worth. If you must beg, let it be in a desperate situation. And don’t do it with entitlement.”

    1. You can say that again my sister!

The only that really irritates me if the level of begging you experience at the airport, especially the international airport.

A friend from Ghana has tagged us, "Abegistan", because our level of begging is outta this world!!!

    3. A Ghanaian said that to you and you laughed along. Are you okay? That was a very rude thing to say.

      Meanwhile use the Abuja airport.
Absolutely no stress or annoying behaviour.

Of course I found it funny and yes, I LAUGHED!

  2. She is right, and to think someone was complaining about this same thing to me yesterday. Fine, there are people who are genuinely in need, but most times, it's just entitlement. At the airport, at the mall, begging just about everywhere.
Even with friendships, I am honestly starting to think some people make friends based on survival. Sadly, they are no different, whether at home or abroad, and they beg for almost everything. To think that sometimes they don't even need those things, and these are things they can get for themselves, but they don't want to use their own money to get them. They are so entitled that the moment you don't give, the fake friendship ends.

  3. It’s so true. As an abroadian, you thread carefully when you receive random messages from Nigerians in Nigeria, despite you going through more serious personal problems. The begging is too much!
BAT, you do this one o!

    1. Who told you BAT caused it? Some of you are so senseless, whether in Nigeria or abroad. Most Nigerians are lazy and entitled. Imagine someone begging for transport money to go attend a wedding party - a matured and elderly woman. Na BAT cause that one? Must she go? Cant she use the time for the party to be productive? Una go cry BLAAD - lazy Nigerians.

    2. When Buhari called them lazy youths, they abused him. If you read between the lines the lazy youths he called them referred to a lot of things including them sitting back and watching Nigeria go down the toilet. It is the youths of countries that change the narrative and take charge when the older generation have failed.

    3. 15:43, how will they change the narrative when they can’t even get a decent paying jobs? Graduates sitting around unemployed or underemployed in a culture that expects new grads to suffer. Junior doctors having to stage strikes after strikes to make a halfway liveable wage, all while being expected to see hundreds of patients daily in public hospitals lacking simple supplies. Do you know what working under some of those conditions does to the psyche of young workers? Hospitals and clinics in shambles, schools that are not fitting for students or staff, police and fire stations that look like they stepped right out of 200 years ago. It is these young ppl who can barely feed themselves who should become the heroes of a nation that continues to siphon resources into the pockets of their elders. Mtsscchhwww

The 22 year old leaving university in those other lands can easily get employment that earns them 50k to 75k yearly with healthcare benefits, company pension, 3-4 weeks vacation, 10 sick days, 2 personal days, in some cases extra days to go do community work all paid, 1 year paid maternity leave, 6 weeks paternity leave and other perks. They have the wherewithal to pursue change. Generations before who could not even fight for simple stable electricity and water supply for the nation want young ppl today to come do what they couldn’t have used two brain cells to determine were important. In 2026 Nigerian government officials are boasting about steady electricity, something other nations have conquered a century ago. Mtsscchhwww.

    3. They should be fired. If they are not receiving sufficient pay then face their union, strike, or go seek other employment. The government should come down hard on civil servants begging clients that they are serving.

  5. I see where she is coming from.

Anyhow, these conversations need to be nuanced so that those who seek for help legitimately are not labelled wrongfully and treated with contempt. Not all asking for support is begging. Givers always have the ability to say no without contempt or hatred. It is best to set a limit as to what you can give to situations in life that requires financial assistance. Set that money aside at the start of the year and let that be the budget for support.

As a natural giver I found the problem for me was not budgeting this into my yearly budget. Since this is after tax money I needed to approach it with more wisdom, especially since I’m nowhere close to being wealthy at the moment. I encourage givers to look at what they are being asked to support and look at the amount of labour hours involved in their giving, a few day, a week, or maybe a month of work or more, is that cause or person worth it? Also remember that giving cannot be written off through taxes, so pray on giving wisely and with discernment. Most importantly, ensure that you do not become exploited. Some givers have silently been used in ways that they didn’t even do for themselves while being quietly laughed at. Seek knowledge before opening your pockets easily and repeatedly.

  7. I have an aunt that begs like this. Once I see her call I switch to airplane mode.
She has a husband, has grown up kids that can support her but mba it’s her little niece she wants to put her burden on. God forbid
Very lazy woman that has refused to work or even start a business so she can be independent.
I was generous initially but when it became a pattern I stopped completely until I feel being generous again
