Although some have relocated, I met a few during my visit. Sometimes I wonder how people who stay in an area for over two or three decades really feel, especially if they're tenants.
On my way out, I stumbled upon a little boy from back then who has now grown, alighting from a vehicle with his mom. He was dressed in baggy trousers and a long-sleeve shirt. I greeted his mom and said to the young man, "See how you don big finish, don turn man."
He smiled without saying a word. I noticed how chubby he had become, evident in his face. I assumed he was just tired, hence his slow walk.
Before I finally left the area, another guy I met on the way to whom I had mentioned how everything had changed in my eyes, gave me shocking news about the guy I had just passed with his mom. When I told him how big the guy had become, he sighed and said to me, "That guy dey gradually go o." I said, "God forbid, what do you mean by that?" It was then he told me the young man is suffering from kidney disease and, from what they heard, it has gotten to an advanced stage. I shouted, "Blood of Jesus!" I had to turn back with him to the guy's place. I felt so sorry for not knowing what he was going through.

There, I saw how swollen his legs were. I shed a tear. I prayed with him before leaving and collected his mom's phone number, promising to keep in touch.
As I left, something struck me. Not everyone who has added weight is living healthily. What if I had complimented him when I first met them by saying, "See as you dey chop money dey fat?" It would have been so insensitive of me. This is one of the reasons I seldom compliment people's looks, whether they're losing weight or adding weight. You really may not know what they're going through in life.
Being alive and watching life slowly fade away from you is the most traumatizing experience anyone can go through. No one truly deserves it. I haven't been able to let go of the mental pictures running through my head since then. Now I am even more afraid about life than ever before, considering what we consume daily in this country.

Nigerians are falling sick daily. Health is failing, people are slumping and in the next minute they're gone. The rate of kidney disease is rising. Where do we go from here?

People are going through a lot.
ReplyDeleteMay God help everyone going through one problem or another. Amen.
Amen.
DeleteWe are in hell in this country!
ReplyDeleteSpeak for yourself.
DeleteYou see why it is good to stop saying things like "you don big finish", "you don loose weight o". You never know what one is going through.
ReplyDeleteMy heart goes out to that young man and his family. May God grant them strength, healing, and provision during this difficult time. 🙏
ReplyDeleteLife is so fragile. 💔 Watching someone gradually lose their health is heartbreaking. May God heal everyone battling silently and protect our children and families from every deadly disease in Jesus name 🙏
