Really???😳😳😳
ReplyDeleteTouching or knocking on the special door ring of a consecrated church in medieval England could grant a fugitive temporary immunity from arrest under the Right of Sanctuary.
ReplyDeleteHow the Sanctuary System Worked
• The Sanctuary Knocker: Many churches and cathedrals—such as Durham Cathedral—featured specialized metal rings or "sanctuary knockers" (often shaped like a lion or monster face) on their doors.
• The 37- to 40-Day Rule: Once the fugitive grasped the ring or stepped onto consecrated church grounds, pursuers and royal authorities were legally forbidden from dragging them out. The individual was typically granted 37 to 40 days of protection inside.
• The Outcome: During this grace period, the fugitive had to make a choice: confess the crime and formally "abjure the realm" (swear an oath to leave England into permanent exile, often walking barefoot to a port) or surrender to face a trial.
• Abolishment: The system was gradually restricted over the centuries and fully abolished by English law in 1624.
