Blog visitors in the UK; Well done !!!
The United Kingdom has announced major changes to its immigration system, doubling the standard waiting period for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) from five years to ten. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood says the country is moving to an earned settlement model after a twelve week public consultation.
Under the new rules, most foreign workers must now wait ten years before qualifying for permanent residency. Those who earn above fifty thousand two hundred and seventy one pounds can still apply after five years, while top earners above one hundred and twenty five thousand pounds can qualify after three. Care workers, doctors, nurses and teachers remain eligible after five years if they earn at least twenty five thousand pounds.
Applicants must have a clean criminal record, speak English to A Level standard, owe no public debt and show steady National Insurance contributions. The rules take effect next year and will apply retroactively to people already living in the United Kingdom.
For refugees, those who arrive through legal government routes can settle after five years. Others will wait twenty years, reduced to ten if they work or study. Those who arrive through small boats could wait up to thirty years.
