Nollywood Or Yorubawood?

In what category does one classify actors who only act Yoruba movies and have never acted in any official Nollywood movie?

Does one still refer to them as Nollywood actor (actor referring to both male and female here) or is there a different movie body for them...as in Yorubawood?

Hollywood is a representation of all actors in America or actors who migrate there and act in their movies right?.
There is only one name Hollywood.
Nollywood does not umbrella actors from the north, south or east unless they have acted in several Nollywood movies.

So how does one address an actor who has only acted in Yoruba or igbo language movies?

If i cannot say 'Nollywood actor....''  is it okay then to say Yoruba actor or igbo actor to represent where they are coming from?

I would really like to know what you think about this because any time i say actor,i have to add 'google is your friend since 1901* because if i say Nollywood actor, people begin to ask what Nollywood movies they have featured in.

This is really confusing!

  2. Dnt compare hollywood wt nollywood.hollywood has one language whc makes it easy for them to pilot d asociation.unlike naija wher d igbos dominate nollywood, leaving d yorubas and hausas,n whc isn't surpose to be.nollywood can only be effective when we acept one of our languages as our official language.and dat can happen.pj

I hate tribalists like you, stop talking asif they own it, igbos are more cus I feel they started the whole acting or most of the intial actors werr igbos(like in circle of doom) , doznt make them kings
Igbos still have their own private movies that doznt have anytin 2 do with nollywood, so does yorubas even calabar people have their own movies now so I ask again what the fuck are u getting @
Yoruba and hausa people have their own stations on dstv yle igbo ppl dont, like what the fuck, everything you'd say igbo ppl like dominating, how come they do not have their own station
And as for hausa ppl, they do not like mixing with nollywood cus of their religion, do you know that as a srz hausa actress if you start acting in nollywood ud become like an outcast
So for the last time what the fuck is wrong with you this tribalistic horse shit

    4. We have Nollywood, Yoruwood and Kaniwood. Nollywood would have been all encompassing but trust igbo people. Anywhere they enter, they scatter. If The running of Nollywood were left in the hands of the Ejiros, the Amatas, the Amaka Igwes of this world, the Emem isongs etc, Nollywood would have been better and all embracing but all these illiterate biafra marketers? That's why the industry is no more like before, if not for DSTV and pirates, who for dey watch their movies?

Bt seriously they shld all come togetha jor cz truly all them nollywood awards don't recognize yoruba efforts. Like dem ogogo, iya awero, iya rainbow, toyin aimakhu and the rest.

Funke akindele managed to cross cuz she gets involved in nollywood projects too. Think thts wt dayo amusa is tryin to do now releasing unforgivable and featuring desmond eliot, mike ezunroye.

Its also a good thing nollywood guys are open to working with them. I saw oge okoye in lagos girls (yoruba movie) and she did good tho the movie itself is the silly version of set it off.

Hehe so u read my epistle? Smh.

So Yoruba/Hausa(Ibo actors don't exist) actors are Nollywood actors too, though Hausa actors call themselves Kannywood actors. My Igbo friends watch Africa Magic Yoruba so if anyone does not know a mentioned actor, the person should really kiss google.

  11. I guess the N in Nollywood stands for Nigeria which means Nigerian Hollywood shortened to Nollywood. Since all of these actors and actresses are Nigerians, then they are all nollywood actors/actresses

    ReplyDelete
  12. For the first time, I am seeing unity amongst all the tribes as regards all the comments here. Kannywood or whatever they are all nollywood, and nobody should lay claim to the name cos it was even coined by a journalist in an article written in a foreign newspaper. And when he did that,he didn't take nigeria's multi faceted ethnic group into considerations. Let's not start any tribal sentiments because what we have is Igbo actors acting English movies, yoruba actors acting English movies,Hausa actors acting English movies. They all belong to Nollywood cos there is no disparity when they take their films to international film festivals.

    ReplyDelete
  13. helo, it is very good issue but i think very less important, they are seperate movies, and if you watch both or any, good for you. KINI BIG DEAL. I dont think youruba folks care about where they are classified. If you say yoruba nollywood actor, i guess thats settles the case. I think the blog owner is trying to fuel some tribalism here.

  15. Hollywood is a district in Los Angeles, California, famous for its commercial area and entertainment industry, and a name used to represent the motion picture industry of the United States. (Wikipedia). If we use the second part as regards Nollywood, then it is all participants in the MOTION picture industry in Nigeria. BTW they need to buy land and name it Nollywood

    ReplyDelete
  16. Nigerians are so dumb. The "N" in nollywood, stands for nigeria. So why would a part of the industry claim the title.
As far as im concerned, yoruba, igbo, hausa movies should be classified as the real nollywood. A lot of the actors are blessed with devine talents and skills.
The so called english movies are mostly fake/ unrealistic story lines and recycled yankee movies.
On the other hand, the yoruba movies are mostly true to life. They are blessed with talented actors that mostly deliver on their roles. The yorubas work harder and do more research but are not rewarded accordingly..They just need to improve on their picture quality.
Im always infuriated when award shows are packed with the glorified english movie actors. They even think they are better than their counterparts.
I have a dream that one day the yoruba, igbo, hausa etc actors would be widely recognised and they will be paid bountifullly.

    1. You really hits the nail on the head, the Yoruba films are the best becos they communicate and projects our culture, not all the junks done in the so called English films, nollywood award is biased and sentimental, Yorubawood had come to stay, the better they disengage from the Nollywood because they are not focus.

There are also movies acted in efik, benin and various indigenous languages of naija, what will u call all those?so they all have to be called nollywood actor then add (the language the person acts in).else there will be so much confusion!#trust naija pple#

  24. Linda you ask some dumb questions sometimes.......Nolllywood is meant to be a name for all Nigerian actors and actresses that is if we are copying Hollywood.....the English movies are mostly boring and the story lines are so totally annoying....while the Yoruba movies are more interesting their acting is most times below standard and all that babalawo things and juju is so irritating.....I know Yorubas do a lot of jazz but must they rub it in our faces all the time? You can't watch one movie in peace before one babalawo rudely interrupts you....then what the heck is with the rubbish English they keep subscribing? The Nigerian movie industry needs to wake up on picture, sound and storyline quality......then the rubbish movie titles we even see sef, gosh....I.e, tea & coffee, recharge card, I want a husband etc.......please they need to get their acts together sharply.....a few of them no doubt are doing well but the majority are mediocre....

  25. Dis Stella sef, I taya for U with the kind of questions you ask. You really should no better and not turn your blog into an avenue for unintelligent tribalists. Of course, nolllywood encompasses the Nigerian movie industry irregardless of language

  26. And to the dimwit that said Yoruba people cannot speak English, your stupidity is limitless. Yorubas are the most educated and enlightened in nigeria. Note that I said "most". How u judge a whole tribe by handful of artistes is beyond me. And dis is not to criticise them in anyway. They are masters of their craft and that is why they have a relevant industry regardless of the use of their local language!
