Mother Suffers Toxic Shock Syndrome Caused By Tampons.

PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU USE TAMPONS.

A mother-of-three was unable to recognise her daughters after being placed in a coma as her body fought toxic shock syndrome, caused by a tampon.

Joanna Cartwright, from Doncaster in South Yorkshire, thought she was suffering a bout of flu when she fell ill.

But three days later, slipping in and out of consciousness, she was rushed to hospital.
There doctors told her family she was just hours from death, her internal organs were beginning to fail.
Eight layers of her skin had peeled off, her hands had swollen, she had lost 50 per cent of her hair and all her nails had fallen off.
Doctors placed the 27-year-old in a medically induced coma as her body battled the bacteria invading her bloodstream.

When she woke eight days later medics explained the TSS, which had been caused by a tampon, had caused Ms Cartwright to suffer meningitis as well.

Looking at pictures of her daughters, Lacey, eight, Nicole, seven and three-year-old Scarlett-Rose, Ms Cartwright drew a blank.

But the mother-of-three has now overcome her ordeal, re-learning to walk after intense physiotherapy.

She said: 'When I woke up from the coma I didn't know what was going on - I couldn't remember anything.

Someone had put pictures up of my children but I didn't know who they were.
'People were pointing at the girls and asking me to name them, but I didn't know.

'I knew I recognised them but I just couldn't place them.
'I was put in the coma on my 25th birthday so when I woke up I was surrounded by birthday cards.
'A nurse was reading the cards out to me but I didn't know any of the names - I didn't even realise it had been my birthday.
'All I really knew was that I was very poorly, and I thought I was going to die.'
Ms Cartwright first fell ill with what she thought was flu.
But when she started struggling to breathe and drifted in and out of consciousness, her mother and partner, Steven, 28, rushed her to hospital.
They were told by medics the then 24-year-old was just hours from death.

'The last thing I remember is being in the car racing towards the hospital,' Ms Cartwright said.
'My internal organs were shutting down so I was put on life support, and put into a medically induced coma.

'My hands had swollen, about eight layers of skin peeled of, I lost about 50 per cent of my hair, and all my nails fell off - I must have looked horrendous.'
Eight days later, when she woke from her coma, Ms Cartwright's memory was blank.
Doctors told her the TSS, which had been caused by a tampon, had caused her to suffer meningitis.
She said: 'It's very strange to wake up and not know who you are or where you are.
'I tried to speak but by the time I'd got to the end of a sentence I couldn't remember why I'd started it.
'Even now people will mention things to me - something I've done, or somewhere I went - and I don't know what they're talking about.
'I was so confused and disorientated - I even thought my brother was my boyfriend.
'I ended up discharging myself because I felt so unsure of everything.
'It wasn't until two days later when I called the doctors for a follow up that they told me I had suffered from toxic shock syndrome along with meningococcal septicaemia.

RARE BUT OFTEN MISSED: WHAT IS TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME?
Toxic shock syndrome is a highly dangerous bacterial infection - but it can be misdiagnosed, because the symptoms are the same as other illnesses and because it is so rare.
It occurs when usually harmless Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus bacteria, which live on the skin, invade the bloodstream and produce dangerous toxins.
Symptoms usually begin with a sudden high fever, with a temperature above 38.9C/102F.

Within a few hours a sufferer will develop flu-like symptoms including headache, muscle aches, a sore throat and cough.
Nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea, feeling faint, dizziness and confusion are also symptoms.

A widespread sunburn-like rash can also appear, while the whites of the eyes, lips and tongue can appear more red than usual.
After the rash appears, it is common for the skin to begin to shed in large sheets, especially from the hands and soles of the feet.

Women are most at risk of getting toxic shock syndrome during menstruation and particularly if they are using tampons, have recently given birth, or are using an internal barrier contraceptive such as a diaphragm. -Dailymail reportage

*I got interested in this story because this is the reason I stopped using tampons..three years ago i a slight dosage of toxic shock and because i had read bout the side effects, when it started happening i knew, because i was sitting on my period,i didnt even wait for it to get serious,I took it off at once and was SO SICK .Please if you use tampons, read about this and do not say it cannot happen to you.

    1. Hmm. ...I rmbr treating patients wt TSS and getting home to cry....Most of them neva survived...b cos they loose lots of fluid the 'severe burns' and also infection of the exposed skin...u can trust naija na...wen u r nt even sure the antibiotics u r giving was not constituted under the bridge in mushin. ...gosh....The worst was one 21 yr old girl, an only child. It's bn over 5 yrs Bt I can neva forget that girl. This girl had 'degloving symptom' where the skin comes off like a glove from the hands n feet ...its terrible.
Sometimes dehydration kills dem...u can imagine aw much fluid they lose per second from a body that's fully exposed...
It's nt only tampons that cause it o...We need to be very careful and if there is any cut or break in ur skin...be careful n wash ur hands and affected areas regularly till it heals off...If one bad strain of staph enter ur from ur skin peren, e go b like magic.
plus that naija we infection full every where even the hosps r worse in terms of picking up infections.

pls let's all be careful...TSS makes one loose his/her eye sight I rmbr most of my pts lost der eyesight even b4 they died., the infection n d super dryness breaks the cornea...etc let me leave matta for mathias.
      God help us all.

    2. You are a native doctor. What the hell is "aw"? I'm sure you're yoruba.

    3. Uselu sir/ma, Yes I am Yoruba, a very proud Omo Ijebu.
'Aw' is my short hand for 'how', sorry if it was confusing.
And using 'aw' or not has nothing to do with my degree or whatever I do for a living. ...pls who are you and what do you do?...
      Thanks!

    4. I don't think you are a doctor otherwise you would not be confusing TSS with something else.
What you are describing is certainly not TSS.
Be honest with yourself. You are not a doctor!

Her Intl news can be read on tmz, daily mail etc and I also visit those sites. The thing with Stellas blog is that we're family. I feel like I belong. I always answer attendance here everyday and I take my time to read comments. And frankly Stellas blog is more mature. At my age I'm more interested in life lessons than in what Kim wore 2 mins ago. Stella might not be mentioned in CNN but she has been praised on national TV and is always being blessed by the numerous lives she touches everyday.

tampons are bleached to give that clear white colour so most contain toxins and that mixed with bacteria from your period in your warm vagina breaths even more bacteria and possibly fungi...
i had to have surgery to slice the top of the uterus that was infected... leep procedure. I only use pads now for 2-3 hours and change it sharp sharp. I dont care about the cost.

  22. I'm really glad you posted this. I've also hated tampons cos of the idea that something foreign would be inside my body for hours,(even uncle dick that would love to live there doesn't ha ha ha).
Nevertheless I tried it thinking it might change my perception of it. Though I read through d side effects n saw TSS n that got my scaredometre scale to d top. Well I still tried it at the beginning of my period 1ce but the period stopped flowing, it just won't come out, took it out n went back to pads but still Aunty Flo just vex n she nor gree come out, I didn't just relate it to d tampon just yet cos as a Lawyer I needed more proof to back my suspicion . Next month when she visited again I used tampon n Flo stopped,3rd month dsame. So 4th month I decided to go my traditional way of using pads n Aunty Flo was so excited, its like she missed her lovely towels,5th month just to be sure I got my evidence I used Uncle Tamp n Aunty Flo stopped,so 6th circle I used my paddington that Flo loves n she happily flew d red flag as she does.
Now I don't know if that's got anything to do with TSS but I told all my siblings n friends to stop using Uncle tamp cos 1 he isn't related to uncle dick n 2 it's not safe.

  26. I'm not particularly happy at this article. When you state a problem then educate people on it like what to do to prevent it. Example: there is AIDS but you don't tell people not to have sex (that hasn't worked out well) but you tell them to practice safe sex. There is ebola but you don't tell people to leave the countries where it's prevalent but you tell them to practice good sanitary habits, proper medical procedures e.t.c.
I'm saying this because I use tampons and I know about Toxic Shock Syndrome. Before I opted for tampons I had major problems with pads they gave me rash (i still use them at night though) if you are not an extremely careful person then tampons are not for you. You have them on beyond the given time, and you shouldn't use more than your flow capacity. I know people who have used them for years successfully. I am one.
So whether to use them or not is your choice. You've just got to be careful and study your own body.
P.S I love them cause they are way more tidy than pads plus I can wear whatever and not care about bumps.

    3. You don't have to stop. You just have to be very careful. The thing is the bacteria resides on surfaces even on our skin. The rope is an avenue for it to climb up and since the wall of the uterus is shedding, it can easily enter our blood stream and cause damage. Don't leave it in for more than 4hrs and maintain adequate hygiene

  55. i lost a good friend to meningitis after a CS. we were sure she got the infection after the shot for the surgery. she lost her eye sight, went gaga, she couldn't recognize anyone. Maybe, just maybe if the so called consultants had given a medically induced coma while flooding her system with antibiotics she would had survived the attack. God help our health sector in Nigeria. The so called consultants were just quarreling and arguing with each other on what they think should be done until she died.

  58. Pads for me. Tried tampons and kept fearing that the string will disappear inside me. Stay free pads works well. Locks in moisture so that it doesn't irritate the sensitive skin down there.
