Baby And Mother Who Went Missing From Hospital Found Dead

A mother who walked out of a Bristol maternity hospital on Tuesday night with her newborn baby have both been found dead.

The bodies of Charlotte Bevan and her daughter Zaani were discovered in the Avon Gorge, near the city's Clifton Suspension bridge.

For two days people held on to whatever hope they could find, that something else, however far fetched, had become of this five-day-old baby girl. But  those hopes were extinguished.

There are questions for the hospital amid local criticism that it has let down this baby and her mother with her history of mental health issues. Should she have been more closely monitored, should one of the people she passed on the way out that night not have noticed and asked her where she was going? The Trust says it has launched a thorough review to find out if their deaths could have been prevented.

Hospital officials where Charlotte Bevan and baby Zaani Tiana went missing from have said they could not have stopped them from leaving.

A spokeswoman said access to maternity wards at St Michael's Hospital is restricted but patients are able to release the doors from the inside to let themselves out.

Women who are identified through screening as potentially being at risk have consultant-led care, involvement of appropriate mental health teams as necessary and involvement of their GP.
Women who are so severely mentally ill that it is thought that they are a danger to themselves or others would be cared for in a mental health facility until they need midwifery or obstetric care, when they would come to the obstetric unit for as long as they need obstetric input.
– ST MICHAEL'S HOSPITAL SPOKESWOMAN

Patients are free to come and go from the hospital as long as there are no legal restrictions on their movements.CULLED

So sad....Mentally disturbed women who birth babies should be closely monitored.

  7. When i had my baby, a scanner was attached to his leg. If you try to take the baby out of the building, an alarm will go off. Anytime they took my baby away for a test or checkup, i had to give them the code number attached to his bracelet which was on mine too before they hand him to me. I taya for these Americans but now i think i appreciate such security measures.
This is a sad case especially for the innocent baby.

  8. I still don't understand how she could walk out without anyone noticing. What about the alarm tag they put on babies leg? Did she remove it too. I remember when I had my last baby in Good hope, a midwife escorted me to hubby's car just to make sure that I was being picked as i told them. They even took the tag off just before we left.
They really let the baby down. The hospital must be sued by the girls relatives if she has got any.
Rest in peace mother and baby.

  10. Oyibos can like to look for who to blame, what happened to her family members? I remember seeing the mum on tv saying her daughter and grand daughter are in a better place, why wasn't she in the hospital with her mentally unstable daughter? Ordinarily isn't her family supposed to be there to support a new mum talkless of an unwell one for that matter. As for tags, they don't usually tag babies in the UK like they do in America

  11. Just had my baby in hospital in London.......doors leading to antenatal and postnatal wards have security where u must press a buzzer to be allowed in.as a mother admitted to the ward you can go out to another floor when you are alone but carrying the baby out without being discharged would not have been easy cos the midwives are the ones who bathe the babies and move them around if need be..anyway diff hospitals differ abit in how they do things...mistakes happen and am sure it's one of those days when things just went wrong and somebody was careless.....while as humans we are not perfect I must give it to the NHS dem dey try well well.....Nigeria has not yet begin to scratch the surface of good medical care for it's citizens......so sad for this young mother and child....May their souls RIP.....
