Team Natural Hair's Growing Membership.....

A few days ago, I had a funny conversation with a friend of mine. I started by praising her for joining the growing trend of ladies rocking their natural hair. Let’s just call them honourable members of #TeamNaturalHair.

I had barely finished praising and teasing her for her guts to cut her hair short when she quickly defended herself. She confided in me that she joined the
#TeamNaturalHair because she is financially at the moment and that she would gladly return to her weaves as soon as her finances was back up.

This brings me to a few questions about the #TeamNaturalHair trend; is the growing membership into the #TeamNaturalHair as a result of brokenness on the part of some ladies? Does a momentary financial constraint push ladies to let their hair down and cut?

Some ladies in the natural hair team have argued that maintaining a natural hair could be more financially draining than wearing long or relaxed hair. This is as a result of expensive hair products needed to soften and nourish natural hair.

The world over, celebrities are known and respected for setting fashion trends. Nigerian female celebrities are no exception. Celebrity photographer and singer, TY Bello is one of such. TY has been a member of #TeamNaturalHair for a very long time while relatively new intake into the team include singer Chidinma, Ex MBGN and Rapper Muna, Omoni Oboli and a host of others.

Whatever reasons are tabled for this growing trend, be rest assured that, just like every other trend in the past, membership of #TeamNaturalHair will decline over time. I am not entirely sure I would want to join the #TeamNaturalHair for any reason''.

Do you agree with this writeup? Are you a member of team natural hair?To contradict this writeup,i am a member of team natural,it was long but i cut really short and turned blonde with curls and i love the feeling of bathing my hair everyday.maintaining short hair is not as expensive as fixing weave but you cannot be broke and revert to natural hair cos it needs maintenance as well.

I am out!

  2. Well i decided to join TeamNaturalHair kos my hair wasnt healthy enough to me, i stopped relaxing and started all the natural hair treatment, and i can say that my hair is way better than it used to be....i spend more money though, kos i still fix/braid my hair, yet use all the natural hair expensive treatments, daily and weekly.

    1. Linda Eze, I strongly disagree with you. Natural hair is lovely if you know how to MAINTAIN it and have the resources as well because it can be expensive as the products are imported. I'm enjoying my low cut hair. There's nothing like pouring water on my hair as I like!

    2. The natural hair salons in naija are even more expensive.
I went off the creamy crack cos my hair was weak and breaking..i hate sitting in dryers and my scalp was very sensitive to needles. I cut my hair in 2013 and my now hubby immediately proposed marriage (lol)

I love love love my hair now. Im bold, beautiful, successful and natural!

Though id say some people in Nigeria are joining the trend cos its in vogue.

  13. I am team natural.
It costs me a lot more to maintain my natural hair than when i was relaxing.
I still wear my weaves whenever i want to thanks to closures.
People were begging me not to cut my hair because it was very long but i insisted.
My natural hair grew so long and full within one year if cutting it.
I love love love my hair
Meanwhile Stella, TY Bello is not natural.
She said she texturized her hair to soften it and blend with her weaves which has a kinky texture.
Natural means no chemical at all.

    ReplyDelete
  14. For me I can rock my natural hair, its no biggie cos I knw I have a nice hair texture though the color comes out as brown,it has nothing to do with finances...there are some peeps that have very bad hair lyk duck fowl nyansh, so they tend to hide it from the general public.

    ReplyDelete
  15. For those who carry their natural hair I applaud them. It is more expensive to maintain natural hair than relaxed
With my own relaxed hair still strong and thick I wouldn't dream of going natural. That would be suicidal

But I don't see my self relaxing it because this is the healthiest I have seen my hair and am so inlove with it.
Going natural does not mean you are broke as you can still fix on your natural hair.

    ReplyDelete
  19. It's soooo true! Especially when you don't live in 9j and finding someone to relax, fix , braid is like finding a needle in a hay stack. Even when u find sef the amount them go call for d mediocre job ehn?! So it's best to take d hair down, low maintenance.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Stella av actually been toying with the idea of cutting my hair .and going al natural .
Reason being my edges are pretty weak and break a lot . And yes it would save me some money

Human hair don't come cheap. The cheapest weave I have ,I got for 45k. Stella all my weaves combined is enough to give me a good vacation!!! And the annoying thing is, it's value can never appreciate ,unlike Gold .

Have stopped buying weaves ,choosing instead to rerock the ones I have . Am investing now in Gold .at least I can resell that when am broke and I might even make a profit !

So anyway team natural loading, I haven't relaxed my hair in 6months And I noticed I have healthier and thicker hair(in the middle :(. ...but what is stopping me now from chopping off the processed part is this- i hate combing my hair!!!! My salon experiences are epic .not just anyone can make my hair cos my scalp hurts like a bish at evry lil tweaking.

Ladies if u wana go natural Pls read up on hair blogs and follow hair journeys it won't be easy but it will be worth it .

Hi stella I was looking forward to the pic of ur son :( :(

  24. The whole point of going natural for most people is learning methods of taking care of their hair and growing healthy strong hair. With that, there is no way you can be broke and go natural when you have to buy special and often more expensive shampoo, conditioner, shea butter(if you're not buying from mama in the market.) It is also consumes a lot of time taking care of your hair, finding the right products for your hair and generally just discovering what works for you and your hair and keeping it strong and healthy. going natural is actually no joke. I was natural for 2 years and just relaxed my hair last year. my hair is healthier and at it's longest length ever (14 inches slightly past shoulder length) and i have learnt what works for my hair and how to keep it growing longer.

Honestly, I think team natural hair is more time consuming and expensive to maintain, considering the fact that you have to visit ur salon @least twice in a week, unlike the long (artificial) hair that u can just fix or braid and leave there for 2weeks 3weeks or even 1month as u wish.. if u don't take proper care of ur natural hair u wld end up looking like a camerounian baboon that escaped from the zoo lool

  40. You are very correct Stella. I think people join for various reasons tho, some bcos of money while others just want to enjoy their natural hair for once ...the group is very inspiring as u see people with long natural hair and get motivated to keep urs, some even fix Afro weavon and come there to lie its their hair while some will carry five years old hair and come and say its four months old growth..well for me it's whatever rocks ur boat.i joined cos I want healthy hair ,after a year plus of dealing with my coarse natural hair ,fighting to comb and style daily,I put relaxer abeg I no fit shout ,saw some pics in the group again and was told my hair was that way because I didn't use the right products...so once again I'm giving it a try with the so called recommended products and if it doesn't work I would remove this whole natural idea fom my head,,for me it's team healthy hair,,whichever form it comes...I'm out.....Stella u must enjoy me

Transplant may be the last option for me..... Ladies please treat your edges with care....

  52. Maintaining a short natural hair also needs money because you ought to go to the salon from time to time to keep the hair in shape. Most times, people prefer short natural hair to the weavons because they can't withstand the heat and itchings as a result of carrying long weaves/weavons and not as if they were broke ass niggas. Hence, they love air and water touching their hair.

    ReplyDelete

  57. I decided to cut my hair off and keep my hair afro, cos one day i woke up being tired of constantly relaxing, breading and weaving on my hair. I realised that i was stressing my hair out and decided that keeping my hair other than afro will be more like me.

When you think about it, when you go to Indian shops and see the number of african women spending on Brazililan or Peruvian hair, relaxing products, extensions and more... my God, what a waste. Some will say it is their purses, so why are we running our mouths. As far as i am concern, i will no longer invest in superficial and contribute to making Indians billionaires, my money will go elsewhere.

On a different note, it is hard work maintaining our hair afro. I use a lot of natural product, a variety of oil for hair, eggs, avocado, sheer butter...

I did not do it because my resources did not allow it, but because i was no longer comfortable wearing anything else but my own hair.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Hmm Stella this was a much needed post oo. I've been thinking of transitioning but I'm undecided. Should I or should I not?

    ReplyDelete
  66. Hi Stella. I have had my natural hair for almost 3 years and I still rock my weaves, so its not about financial abilities. I decided to cut my permed hair because I got tired of scalp burns that I got from the chemicals I used to perm my hair. I also decided to go natural because I wanted to play with my hair whenever I wanted to. For example, I wash my hair most times I take a shower ( when I don't have a weave installed) and I don't have to worry about washing off the products that holds the curls after a perm set curls. More so, I went natural because I wanted to know why some people call African hair bad/ugly hair. I realized natural hair is very versatile, you can straighten it out to have a smooth look, you can also rock it with the kinky look, you can also fix your "expensive" weaves, or have the good old braids done. Anyway, it makes me feel like that's one thing I'm not going let the society take away from me. Lol.

  89. well, i never wanted my hair natural but i happen to enter Canada during spring and suddenly all my relaxed hair stated falling off. It wasn't funny at all. Anytime i combed my hair i found alot of it following the comb, i was so annoyed that i decided not to put any relaxer anymore. Stella, its more expensive and time consuming to maintain, thats the bitter truth. Cos you can quickly arrange your braids or comb out or style your weave, its not the same with the natural hair couple with the special treatments you mustuse to maintain it...

  90. Natural hair is expensive to maintain. That is you have to do it from within (with what you eat and good multivitamins for hair).

Also, natural hair need to always retain moisture or else they break, this where good quality natural products come into play.
Not forgetting deep conditioning too for natural
Hair and many more one has to do to retain length, shine, volume etc.

Natural hair is expensive to maintain.

  91. Natural hair is EXPENSIVE TO MAINTAIN!

Stella, the lady you spoke to is on low cut and we all know it is the easiest to maintain but as the hair gets longer, that's when the hardwork and expenses come in.

For me, I think the major reasons ladies don't want to rock their natural hair are:
    1. Shrinkage and
    2. Tangles

If these two can be tackled, natural hair is lovely to maintain.

I cut my hair in January because I got tired of keeping long hair; I wanted to take a break from it and rock short hair for the meantime.

I even had a meltdown as the shrinkage and tangles were "showing me PEPPER." I took my time to go online and research on way to maintain and care for natural hair. I was interested in tacking shrinkage and tangles.

My mom even suggested applying relaxer/texlaxer but I decline because I didn't want to alter my hair texture permanently. In the course of my research, I came across NATURAL WAYS to loosen kinky/curly/coily hair. These methods give temporary result and won't alter the hair structure or destroy the protein bonds (responsible for the curl pattern of our hair) like relaxers/texlaxers do.

    They are:
    1. Caramel treatment
    2. Cherry Lola treatment
    3. Coconut oil and lime/lemon
    4. Henna (Laali) treatment.

I dried no. 4 and it DID loosen my curls but I didn't apply it properly, so I had some part loosed and some curly. It gave my hair a red tint in bright light but I didn't like that. So I ruled it OUT!

I was gunning for no. 3 till I came across Maximum Hydration Method (MHM) and I decided to put it on hold for now.

The goal of MHM is to introduce moisture to kinky hair and keep the moisture locked in for days. One thing with kinky hair is DRYNESS. MHM tackles that, giving you well-defined curls that POP! (Shrinkage and tangle are controlled)

So if you are afraid of maintaining your natural hair because of tangles and shrinkage, why not loosen the curls with natural ingredients bit rather than spoiling it with creamy crack!

    1. My hair was doing soldier go soldier no come so I did the big chop July last year and started making my hair in September..and it's obvious that it's growing faster natural..anybody telling you natural hair is expensive to maintain has money to dash those orishirishi products manufacturers or may be ignorant...I collect Shea butter from mum, make my own coconut oil..execept for the Jamaican black castor oil tho (1750) which goes a long way when used sparingly (mixed with coconut oil) cos you don't kuku need much and I use it mainly for the edges. Also my main advice is that you get good wigs not those funny looking ones of 1000/1500 I suggest lace front wigs about 4k and can be used for 3months while i do braids or wear another one in between the 3 month ..so you can do stuffs like didi or thread for two weeks after which you pre poo then do the didi again..this will allow your hair breath and grow well. You can fix and braid but do the size that won't cut your front hair as for fixing most times if they have to weave the hair at the edges which usually cuts my hair, so I prefer the wigs cos I do hate spending time at the salon, lastly use dudu osun soap(120)to wash your hair, most if not all those shampoos are just detergent, sulphate or sulphur..dudu osun is natural no mumu chemical and it does get rid of drandruff cos I dint see mine again when I used it just once...
p.s I believe all I mentioned are the very basic stuffs you need to maintain your natural hair for any hair type...the rest to me are orishirishi....Ada

    2. @Ada, you are funny. Nice one. All you mentioned above don't do it for me apart from dudu osun(for clarifying).

I have shea butter (temporary effect), coconut oil (makes my hair stiff) and olive oil (just sits on my hairy but they don't give me that hairgasm I crave for.

I want to wear my hair loosed with air blowing over it rather than hiding it in wigs, braids and all. Infact, I'm trying to avoid braids for now.

My hair is coarse and prone to dryness and because of this, I'm interested in having a soft and moisturised hair but sadly those above products won't give me that.

I'm guessing you have a fine and soft hair. Anyone with coarse hair like mine will understand my point of view.

      Delete
    3. *smiles* @Rubynnia you're right my hair is soft, but those stuffs works for most girls I know..guess yours is just more coarse..like the fact that you're trying out natural stuffs..I believe you will get your desired texture..hope you use that kind of scarf that helps keep the hair from drying out while your hair is deep conditioned and in a protective style esp at night. I do carry my natural hair for just about a few days in a month..to comb the hair is also tiring...Ada

  94. SDK,

Even me, I am in this lady's camp. to tell the truth (even though I wont admit that in real life), my joining team natural was because I could not afford relaxer. There were so many bills to pay and by the time I finish paying all of them, not enough money left for me to even pay transport to the work that is helping me earn a living talk less of buying relaxer. Na so I comot old wig wey dey my house, brush am put for head dey go my way.

I let the natural hair grow out jo!! Na so I realise say I don join team natural after like 6 months of not being able to afford relaxer. I use hair softner each time I wash my hair and wear protective styling 99% of the time. Its been 16 months now and team natural is still waxing strong. I enjoy the freedom that comes with getting home at night and throwing off the wig - make breeze blow my head small.

I really admire ladies that let their hair out. My liver never reach.

  97. I'm transitioning right now.
My hair is bulky, long and has a Chinese finesse in it. :))
Though, I still get on braids and weaves.
I'm going for the big chop soon, scared a little because I'll look five years younger.
Being petite doesn't really suit wearing it natural. Sigh.

But, seriously y'all team natural always make this whole thing sound like a ritual/initiation.

    1. As per the initiation thing, you can say that again.

  98. For me, I say "do you", but I am so team natural hair it is not funny. My hair has grown more than it ever has and that is because I do not use caustic soda on my hair anymore. Biko I was almost going bald, till I stumbled over a natural hair video on youtube and I was totally sold. Maintaining natural hair is tough and can cost a pretty penny sometimes (especially early stages when you are trying to find the right product), but it is so worth it. Personally, I believe there are pros and cons in everything we do, but for me natural hair pros outweigh the cons. If you are looking for hawt natural hair styles please make google and youtube your friend. The information is endless.

  99. Join the natural hair team, it's been over a year and counting and have never looked bak. Now it's long enough to pack up and the tiny curly effect I get is so fulfilling.

  100. I have dreads only because I live in a white man's country and it's almost impossible to find someone to make my hair. Plus my hair is very coarse so it hurts when ppl touch it. With dreads, I endure d pain like 1ce a year

  101. Isn't it a shame when wearing your hair in the state it grows out of your head is considered a "trend".

    ReplyDelete
  102. I have really bad hair (scanty, breakage, ratchop), so the new trend inspired me to go natural. I don't have the strength for those DIY and homemade hair stuff (honey, mayo, onions, ACV, baking soda, orishirishi), so buying hair products are quite expensive o. I've spent almost 20k already stocking up on all the things I need when I decide to finally expose my hair and style it, mostly Cantu products (leave-in conditioner, coconut bla bla, jojoba kini, can't remember jare). I'm still transitioning, so havnt chopped off the relaxed part yet...soon though, after I take out the long kinky braids...#can'tWait

  103. I've been a member of teamnatural for 10 years. i started out at 20 when i got really pissed off with society's expectation from black women which is rather unrealistic since the way our hair grows is different. At the time, i felt relaxing my hair was a kind of self hate about myself and how I was created by God. I decided to go natural. Since them, I have cut off my hair twice and regrown it. I mostly braid my hair. I rarely fix a weave (which i hate with a passion because of the stink that oozes out after 2 weeks of not washing the hair). I don't think its a declining trend. This trend has been gaining ground for over 10 years now. I think its here to stay.
