DEAD AWAKE: Sleep Paralysis. - A MUST READ.

After punching on my laptop's keypad for five straight hours, my eyelids would have nothing but flap close. I staggered off, crashing on to my bed as I dozed off in two minutes. Then suddenly...

The entire room is pitch dark and as silent as the grave yard. I thought I heard a sound from my window. Motionless, my body lies on the bed as my eyes quickly darts to the wall, suddenly the clock brightens in the dark, its 2:44 AM as I heard my window crashing, a one-eyed ghost-like creature with four sword-like-teeths struggling to break into my room. Jez!

I screamed but my voice couldn't let the scream out, I made to jump out of bed but an unknown force suppresses. The "ghost's head, now in the room, roaring with mouth wide open; with massive teeth gnawing at me ravenously. Dead scared, I mustered all my strength to scream but my mouth just couldn't open. Helpless, I lay on my bed half asleep and half awake.

I'm asleep but this sure isn't a dream because I know I'm about to be devoured, but unfortunately my body has failed to move. Then suddenly, the monster breaks in, charging at me with deathly ferocity then I feel a hand taping me on the chest; I broke fully awake. My girlfriend, Shazy just saved me from the monster in the dream I just had while I was wide awake.

The above is my recent experience and I know many of you have had such frightening "dreams" which you think you are awake but you are really half-awake. It is called SLEEP PARALYSIS.
Sleep paralysis is a phenomenon that occurs when a person wakes up from a sleep being unable to move, speak, or react.  It usually occurs as a person is about to fall asleep or as they are about to wake up out of sleep, and is usually accompanied with breathing difficulties.

This may not sound like a big deal for those who haven't experienced it, but it can be terrifying at times.  You are totally paralyzed and unable to wake yourself up.  When you are in a state of paralysis, it is the brains natural response to think that you are under attack, so your brain naturally enters into a state of "flight" mode.
Sometimes, sleep paralysis is accompanied by hallucinations or the feeling that there is an intruder in the room.  Some people even claim to sense the presence of demonic entities that sit on their chest, or aliens that stand over top of them.

The most plausible scientific explanation is that it is thought to occur when the mind wakes up out of REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, the stage of sleep where most of your dreams occur. Every night during REM sleep the body shuts down virtually all muscle activity to prevent you from acting out those dreams).

CAUSES OF SLEEP PARALYSIS
Sleep paralysis is not fatal, some of the factors that cause it include physical fatigue, under-sleeping, erratic sleep schedule, stress, and an overuse of stimulants.  Personally, under-sleeping and stress is what has caused most of my sleep paralysis experiences.  Due to my job as a scriptwriter, I tend to have less sleep especially at night.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU CAN'T MOVE.
Due to fear and anxiety, you may try to fight it; No, don't ever try to fight it. The more you try, the longer it gets and all your efforts will be completely ineffective.  If you wake up and realize you are in a state of sleep paralysis, don't resist it.  The minute you resist it, you will start freaking out.  Accept it and relax. Breathe in and out slowly and consciously, don't panic, just enter a meditative state of mind and it will shortly pass with time.

You can give yourself a bad experience by what you choose to think about and where you allow your mind to wander to. It can only have power over you if you give it your power.

HOW TO PREVENT SLEEP PARALYSIS.
To prevent sleep paralysis, address the causes above. Have a proper sleep schedule.  Another big way to prevent sleep paralysis is to not sleep in supine position.  This is what supine position looks like:

When you sleep flat on your back in supine position, your soft palate is more likely to collapse and obstruct your breathing.  This causes you to wake up out of deep sleep while your body is still in a state of atonia from REM sleep.

Sleeping on your stomach (in prone position) or on your side is a good way to prevent this from happening. When ever you experience this, don't sleep off immediately, it will come back; before you sleep back, put on the light and go wash your face.

USING SLEEP PARALYSIS AS A SPIRITUAL ADVANTAGE.

For those that have heard of astral travel and wish to experience it, this is the best chance to try to initiate an out-of-body experience or a lucid dream.

Remember, some part of you remains in REM sleep while your waking mind is alert and attentive. Visualize and feel yourself leaving your body, stay calm in your mind and you will see yourself hovering over top of your own body.

This may look scary but it’s an experience you would savor.  I have come to realize that there is really nothing to be scared of in sleep paralysis or REM sleep.  Nobody has ever died or been injured from being in sleep paralysis, and it usually doesn't last for more than 30 seconds. Rather the opposite on Sleep paralysis which manifests in people acting out dreams and sleep-walking is more risky.

To avoid sleep paralysis, clean up your sleep schedule but if you feel like you're up to it, use is as a launching pad for the exploration of other dimensions.

    1. The narrative here happened within mins of having fallen asleep meaning it was a predormital sleep paralysis. He had the experience in the Non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) sleep stage. Just when his muscles were beginning to relax. This stage goes on fairly long before the transition to the REM where dreams occur. In my preteen years, I used to experience the waking up sleep paralysis and I would claw at the sheets and scream for mum to no avail. And when I regain my limbs and active senses, I would make my way to mum and accuse her of not paying attention when the witches were "pressing me". She would in turn call on her dead husband to stand and protect the children he left behind. Lol. Then she would make me go back to sleep and warn me not to sleep face up. Till today, I still sleep belly down. She got that part right.

It wasn't until years later, I understood the phenomenon when my curiosity was rewarded by researches.

    7. This shit is scary! It's happened to me a few times. Was only a few seconds but it always seems like forever. Last time it happened, my eyes where partially open I think cos I could see hubby next to me snoring away. Tried in vain to tap him but I couldn't even get to him. Was so relieved when I woke up. Lol.

My friend was telling me the one that happened to him some years ago. In the middle of the sleep paralysis, he said he just found himself out of his body and outside his room door. The door was slightly ajar, the way he left it before he went to bed. Next thing, he saw a man wearing a cap peering at his sleeping body. The guy was at his room door in front of him. He said he wasn't really scared, he tried to enter the room and the minute kept standing in his way and going close to his sleeping body he became tired and went downstairs and the man with the hat followed him saying nothing. Then he woke up. Must have been pretty scary.

Amebo mistress, ur comment cracked me up totally.. looooool

Due to my main job, I don't sleep overnight as that's when I work my shifts. The few hours before midnight wen I shld be sleeping, I'm awake nd scared kos I don't wanna be pressed by evil spirits . now I know better

    16. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh this happens to me a lot oooo!!!!

Reading through the first chunk ...I had to scream at intervals because this is just so me. OMG I hate this thing.. Finally got a name for it. Could the writer be telling my story??

Sleep paralysis, you say? OMG.. the scary part is when my breathing ceases.. Jesus!!! I would lie motionless while my brain fights to move my body.. then the intervals when my breathing stops....it gets prolonged.. and I think I'm gonna die. It takes a few seconds, the writer suggests? No way.. it takes like forever and ever!!

I'm there struggling within me....and finally when I catch my grip my body is able to move. And voila.... I start to breath faster than normal, it's like taking a deep dive beneath the water while u hold ur breath....Jeeezzzz..

I attributed this experience to some spiritual suppressants of some sort. I had never before now articulated the experience well enough to share with anyone that would understand me. I used to think that no matter how hard I tried... no one would get this thing.

But TODAY.. after reading this.. I've been liberated from the peculiar mystery of this "spiritual stampede" that I had always experienced. Although I haven't had it of late..not in the past year or two. But it sure is a familiar occurrence and I dread it!!!

Waoo I'm glad I read this post. Feels good to know that I'm not alone. Ehehe Hallelujah!!!

    2. Correct... sleep is deep and spiritual as well. Let no one be deceived. Science doesn't believe in God. Sleep paralysis is just a name, just as they name so many other metaphysical and supernatural phonomena that they don't understand. Giving it a name does not change what it is. It might be normal, but most times when one experiences such things, it is best to get down on your knees immediately and pray. A lot happens while we sleep.

      I think not!
A friend once told me her experience, while totally numb she saw the face of a classmate of her's who she'd had a serious argument with some days ago and was no longer on speaking terms with. JUST her face. Everything else was pitch black.
She was sort of chanting and kept asking 'are you scared of me now, are you scared of me?'
All the while my friend was praying, finally it was over and she prayed again only to get to school the very next day, the girl saw her, walked straight to her and asked 'How was your night? Are you scared yet?'
My friend was shaking when she told me and it still spooks me out when I think about it.
It might have a scientific name but winshes dey use am wella.
P.s: Astral travel is occultic and for you to be able to experience that while under 'sleep paralysis' clearly means it's not ordinary.

    6. Mrs B, I think what ur friend experienced is a nightmare. There's a clear difference btw a nightmare and this sleep thing the writer is talking here. I experience it a lot, so I know. It's a far cry from seeing faces of anyone in ur sleep. In this instance there's not much activity to even move around, it leaves u stoned and breathless. I don't see faces or have encounters, all that happens is that u are fixated and helpless. Let's not mix it with nightmares, it's very not the same

      Delete
  3. I think I've experienced this kinda thing, I call it nightmares tho. Something is running after me and almost always catches up with me and then I try to scream Jesus or run faster, but something keeps drawing me back and then I can't scream Jesus. But d difference here is that, I normally believe I'm dreaming even in d 'dream' then force myself awake. And I find myself breathing with difficulty. I hope dis explains it cos I've been thinking something is after me maybe even d haters from dis blog.

    1. Thank you for this your comment. This is exactly my experience because I still experienced one a few days ago. If the writer had just shared his experience; scientific explanation and , it would have been a great help but he just had to bring in spiritual things in which makes me wary.
I have this friend who is a grail messenger aand he told me that I should consider coming for their meetings because of my view on spiritual matters, religion and my experience with "sleep paralysis". Immediately he mentioned astral, na run o because I believe anything astral travel is occultic amd dangerous and this isnt because I am a what people term "born again" xtian. I only have enough sense to know when some is trying to take advantage of my curiosity.
Please people should be wary of all these astral believing occults wey full naija now from Eckankar, cross bearer (grail message) to AMORC and even ogboni. The same way major religions try to get people to convert; its the same way this occults abi na organisations try to get get followers too by using science and spirituality in the same sentence to arouse your curiousity to find out. My advice, DONT FALL FOR THAT SHIT!
Thanks for the article though as it has helped me put a name to my experience and now I know how to avoid having another experience. But if you want to recruit for your occult, please come out straight so people know what they are getting into from the beginning instead of trying to use their ignorance against them.

i thought about telling her but the fear of syringe wouldn't let me...over the years i've learnt how to control it, its still very terrifying but i now know when its coming and how to keep calm and break free...it used to happen daily but over the years it has reduced to a monthly affair...one day it would stop, until then, i sleep with my hand on my sister's clothes and remind them to always wake me anytime they get up for something...

  34. there is an entirely physiological explanation for the phenomenon known as sleep paralysis. As we fall asleep, our minds may enter a hypnagogic state. It’s what happens when the sleeper’s still-aware mind is faced with dream images. As some people wake up, they experience a hypnopompic state, which is the dreaming mind faced with stimuli from the real world. In both cases, the dreams can seem very real, taking on a vivid, hallucinatory feeling. Often these images are of black smudges, which the confused mind interprets as human figures, sometimes called “shadow people.” The hallucinations can also take the form of sounds like a loud bang or a child’s cry. These episodes frequently begin with a falling feeling followed by a “hypnic jerk” where the body’s muscles violently contract.

One of the scarier experiences with sleep paralysis is the inclusion of lucid dreaming and false awakening. The sleeper recognizes he’s asleep and tries to wake up. He opens his eyes in relief, but soon realizes he’s still asleep. This can go on for some time, sometimes resulting in an actual awareness of his real surroundings—the pressure of the covers, the light of the room beyond his eyelids—but still the inability to fully waken. That awareness can slip away again, returning the sleeper to the hallucinations.

Muscle paralysis in sleep is a necessary thing. People who act out their dreams on a regular basis are prone to accidental injury—even jumping out of windows. Knowing that you’re asleep and paralyzed, however, can be frightening. You tell yourself to open your eyes, just to get caught in another false awakening. One theory is that sleep paralysis affects the larger parts of the body more completely. You can try to wake up by wiggling your toes or fingers. It’s also possible to pray during this time. This will often give comfort that lets you fall back into unconsciousness. You may be able to avoid sleep paralysis by getting sufficient rest and avoiding drugs and alcohol.

In probably the vast majority of cases, sleep paralysis is just a quirk in a person’s REM cycle, not a spiritual attack. At the same time, there is no denying that demons can and do attack us. It seems plausible, then, that demons can and do attack us while we sleep. In the Gospels, several instances of demonic attack involved clear physical symptoms. So, it is possible that a demonic attack could result in symptoms resembling sleep paralysis. Whatever the case, we have a God who watches over us, whether we are awake or asleep (1 John 4:4).

“In peace I will both lie down and sleep, For You alone, O LORD, make me to dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8).

  35. Here goes one of my sleep paralysis experience amongst d numerous ones

This happened some years back. Myself,my elder and younger sis were sleeping on d same bed. Then all of a sudden,I felt a pressure on my chest, couldn't move my hands and legs #scary.
I was screaming Jesus Jesus...for where, the force was still there. Then I remembered I wasn't sleeping alone. I started calling auntie Magdalene(my elder sis) d help still didn't come. I said to myself "shey na today I go die?". Gradually,i felt d pressure leave #deep sigh of relief coupled with some hard breath
The next morning,I went to my elder sister..narated last night experience to here and asked if she didn't hear me call her? She said she did not ....only for my younger sister to say she heard me calling aunty Meg and moving my body but she was too scared to touch me.
Each I remember it,I just laugh it off

  41. Sometimes, i wake up a night and feel a force pressing my chest. I DON'T EVER TRY TO RELAX OR SLEEP IT OFF cos i get scared that I might die in my sleep if i embrace whatever is holding me down. It happens even when I sleep with the lights on and as a single girl without a boo or bed mate, it happens on a regular basis. Poster I am surprised you didnt include serious prayers cos for me, it doesn't stop until I pray in my thoughts (Usually a prayer of repentance incase>>>GOD FORBIDS) or play gospel music (Tasha Cobbs Break every chain. lol)until my battery drains. Very scary experience. i should blog about this soon.

    2. NSG dear, your sleeping alone has nothing to do with it. After those who slept with husbands, sisters and mothers couldn't scream out for help. This shows that this can only be overcome with God by your side. I think saying night prayers helps.

  52. very true but when this happens to me I start to pray because unlike you writer I got really attacked in one of my episodes. This isnt a mere thing as you paint it to be . of course as a writer you will make it seem all beautiful and a savory experience, given, it is what you do .
I feel helpless and cant breathe or move, the air is still and theres a beign hovering ove me , or walking towards me . the only thing hat makes him go away is when I pray fervently . so theres nothing to savor.

    ReplyDelete
  53. by the way, na so people they die for sleep. This life is deeper than what we see or are told to believe by science. there are beings other than just humans that hover this earth and the only thing that keeps them away is prayers.

    ReplyDelete
  54. It's all lies, dis is just a given name to demonic attack. The best way to send it away is by shouting"BY THE POWER IN THE BLOOD OF JESUS ! It will surely go away.shout it in your spirit and when you finally regain urself pray against it.

  60. Hian! Why would i want to initiate an out-of-body experience? The sleep paralysis is already scary enough as it is. So i should now travel out of my body and die from there? Mbanu! I'll rather mumbe "Jesus!" "Jesus!" until the amosu leaves.

  62. yes ohh i experienced it like twice. At d verge of waking up u feel vry weak i get dis feeling dat smbody is holding me nd want to squeeze d life out of me. i become helpless, cant struggle at all even if u try to nd i see a crazy creature in my sleep, wen i shout d voice dont come out, like my voice is failing me all i do in my mind is call d name of JESUS several times nd wish smbody will jst touch me. my brother has experienced smtin like dat too, he said maybe cos he didnt pray d rosary bfor he slept dat was wat caused it nd wen he woke up he took his chaplet immediately. dats y wen i see pple sleeping i touch dem for smtime cos i feel dey mite be passing tru wat i ve experienced. nt gud at all. And it has a name (SLEEP PARALYSIS) jst pray wen it happens to u.

    1. @ Precious Okoro. I try to sleep holding my divine mercy rosary . I either hold it or sleep on it. Sleep paralysis is definitely an avenue for demonic spirits to invade because the person isn't even conscious or awake enough to fight them off. So people, take u our night prayers seriously. Psalm 91 is particularly helpful

  68. It is not as ordinary as this writer painted it, i say so because it has happened to me many times, when it happens i scream BLOOD OF JESUS!! And it disappears.

    ReplyDelete
  69. An experience you'll come to savour?
It might have a scientific name but winshes use it. And p.s: Astral travel is occultic. And for you to be able to practice it while under 'sleep paralysis' should tell you that it is not ordinary.

  70. I actually thought John was typing my story, it happens 2 b a lot, its scary struggling to wake up as if ur spirit wants to leave ur body, u end up waking up and asking some1 close to u "why did'nt shake me I was screaming ur name?" Afta dis c kabashing lol, I thought some forces were actually pressing me. Well it is well even in the Well

  71. I used to experience sleep paralysis in the past. Unfortunately this write up did not give the best solution to this issue.
Even though sleep paralysis means that you are unable to move your body, your toes can still move during this paralysis. So rather than not fighting it, just move your toes and that does the trick.

Once again, flicking your toes gets you out of the sleep paralysis.

  72. I experienced the astral projection stuff a couple of months back in my room;ND unfortunately for me,I live alone. The one of someone pressing one down on the bed was in my former apartment. I know it might sound funny but in truth this things are scarier than they sound. If you've never experienced it,pray you're not alone the day or night it happens. Cause believe me that movie insidious would make a whole lot more sense than it did tue first time you watched it.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Had my last astral experience a couple months ago,the one of having a feeling of someone on your cheat I have felt in the past in fact it was part of the reason I moved out of my last apartment and please note sleeping belly down doesn't always solve it. All I can say is if you've never experienced it before you are the lucky one's,but to those who have you and I can boldly say if it should ever happen again this article won't come to mind at all during the experience. It's a scary thing to happen to someone, believe me it is especially when you live alone. If you still think its fun and games maybe you should watch insidious again and then you would get an inkling into what a person goes through; it ain't funny at all
