President Buhari Signs Endangered Species Bill Into Law

President Muhammadu Buhari has assented to the ‎Endangered Species Control of International Trade and Traffic Amendment Act 2016, earlier passed by the National Assembly.

Sen. Ita Enang, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), made this known while briefing State House correspondents on Friday in Abuja.

He said that ‎the Act was one of the 10 bills forwarded by the National Assembly to the President, adding that with the approval, the President had completed work on all the bills sent to him for his consent.

“The President has assented to the bill sent by the National Assembly, The Endangered Species (Control of International Trade and Traffic) Amendment Act 2016.

“This is one of the 10 Bills that were forwarded by the National Assembly to Mr President and he has just assented to this, almost completing every action on all the Bills that were forwarded to him by the National Assembly.

“The intent of this amendment is to bring the penalty provisions in line with economic realities and to act as a deterrent or deter people from trafficking and trading in endangered species because endangered are preserved of the country.’’

The Presidential aide said the intent of the amendment was to bring the penalty provisions in line with economic realities and to serve as a deterrent to people trafficking in endangered species “because endangered species are the preserves of the country”.

According to him, the Act is to discourage trafficking in endangered species and will encourage the culture of the preservation of endangered species.

He added that with the assent, the President had increased the penalties for violations of the provisions in line with today’s realities.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that with the signing of the Act, President Buhari had so far signed 17 bills into law in 2016.

    2. Flying you are very correct. Tell me about it. My first degree I specialized in urban forestry and environmental conservation.

However, if countries like south africa and Kenya are passing such bills we would understand because the tourism is VERY high in such countries. I have had opportunities of going for game hunting season in Kenya and visited a few wildlife parks in South Africa and meeeen those people have troupes of people coming in and spending money on wildlife and the tourism it promotes.

However, go to the Jos wildlife park. The poor lion is so skinny. Uni Ibadan zoo nko? Fail!! My dad took me there when I was a kid. Went there recently the decline in animal population is drastic. No good medical care through vertinary doctors, feeding allocation for the animals is constantly being taken by the park rangers and zoo managers, poor maintenance. The ONLY animals that are constantly conserved are the monkeys and chimpanzees and apes.... primates. The rest are dying of poor care and malnutrition . Especially the wild ones.
So before they pass any bill, they should tackle problems from the root. THIS is always my issue with Nigerians. We want to topical solution. Which tourists are even coming that we are passing bills to 'encourage'? Tourism in Nigeria is very poor because our system is so unstable and tourist attraction is low.

So don't blame people who doesnt understand what this bill is all about. As you can see, we haven't reached the point where tourism is the top of our list. The government still has a lot to do before passing such 'glamorous' bills.

  8. Some guys just think having balls makes you a man. When those bills are running how to you stop hungry Nigerians from eating? I don't get what some are saying probably your balls have entered your anus. I want to hear bills that says this number from institutions after graduation gets a job and must be specific maybe 10 from each depart. For informal Eduactionist too make available conducive law and materials to help their business grow, stop buying toothpick and pencil from abroad including biros haba. Bills should come out on these issues. Health nko???? A bill saying any hospital must treat emergencies with promptness and immunization for babies free. International passport should be given to every child born free of charge in Nigeria. Salaries of civil servants must be paid as at when due. See e plenty cos a hungry man is a n angry man...... fly abi wetin dem call you na bcos you never dey situation and hungry man fit help you but because animal no dey to chop or food him no get strength to help you.....my advise don't be selfish cos if food goes into bin weekly then you are wicked
