  19. Typical! We see this stunt quite often. A couple involved in domestic violence, in the heat of the moment the wife files charges against the husband. At the time, she feels she has the strength and support to fight for her rights in court. Some friends and family members, whatever their motives are, actually support and encourage her to pursue the case to its logical conclusion.

As days turn to weeks and weeks to months, she begins second guessing her decisions. Some friends who initially supported her being reducing by the number. They pretend to be on her side when they visit her but as soon as they are in the company of other friends who are not in support of wives filing charges against their husbands, they join the bandwagon and blast her. Of course, some of the backbiting and subterfuge filters back to Mercy which only makes her doubt herself more. There are a lot of her fans who are old school and would keep sending her messages criticising her for the matter against her husband in court.‎

The human mind can be very malleable. Before long, Mercy starts regretting her actions. She MAY still want the separation but she no longer wants to go on with the court case. She MAY even feel that the time he spent in prison custody is punishment enough, she's been married to him and even has his child after all, pity is inevitable. So what does she do? She tells her lawyer she no longer wants the case prosecuted but the buzz this case has caused is yet to settle down. What's the best legal strategy if you no longer want a criminal case to go on but you don't want people to know you chickened out? Stop coming to court, that's the oldest trick in the book. By the 3rd or 4th adjournment and the prosecution's key witness is not available, the defence counsel will apply to court to strike out the matter for want of diligent prosecution and the court would have no choice but to oblige.

I had a feeling this would happen, the day she came late to court with her lawyer and both of them met with the magistrate in chambers. I'm guessing they briefed the magistrate of their intentions so that it wouldn't come as a surprise. It is a very common practice albeit irregular and considered "backdoor". If I'm right, this case will be struck out very soon.‎ It takes gumption and determination to pursue a criminal case against your husband, the father of your child(ren), to its logical conclusion. Not many Nigerian women have that strength, more so when society vilifies such women.
