SDK Blog Series -Meet The Inlaws - Story 1

Have you met your in laws to be already?.....Or do you wanna gist us how it was when you met them?was it before, during or after the wedding?
This is a new SDK Blog series that should be a hit cos you may not know it but we all have inlaws.....

Bobo and I have dated barely over a year but we've been good friends for close to two years. He has been hinting at marriage since we became 'official' and boy am I scared. Scared because I don't know if I love him enough to want to marry him but I know for a fact that Bobo is lost in the sauce because he doesn't fail to show me how much I mean to him.

Anyway, I took my leave and I wanted a getaway but I was unable to afford one outside Nigeria at the time because I failed to plan properly beforehand.

Fortunately, Bobo was changing jobs and wouldn't be resuming at the new place till January, so he sent in his resignation and automatically had a lot of free days. He quickly mentioned that he has to go spend some of his free days visiting his mother in another state in the country and asked if I would love to tag.

The bells in my head started ringing immediately, ah Bobo wants me to know his place but why? Since I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I grudgingly agreed but I told him I'm going strictly as a tourist to know that part of the country better as the tourist that I am na and not to meet anyone and that I'd be staying at a hotel.

I'm sure Bobo was just 'yimuing' as I mentioned hotel.

Plans were in full motion and off we went to his hometown on baecation. To be honest, we both needed it, what, with our busy schedules even though we try to see each other after work daily.

As soon as we arrived, he said he needed to drop his bag at home first before we go hotel hunting for me. He calmed me down after noticing that my countenance changed because he knew that wasn't part of the initial plan.

We had agreed that I'd get a hotel first once we arrived, freshen up before I head with him to his house to meet his people but I succumbed anyway because he kept complaining about how heavy his bag was and added that no one would be home at that time because they'd be at work.

So we headed to his family house but surprise surprise his mum had left work early to come home and cook for him and his guest (me). He had told her I was tagging along and I had excitedly screamed over the phone while they were talking that I wanted Ofada as my arrival meal. Might I add that Mama is the only parent Bobo has as his father died a few years back and he is the first child.

Anyway, I couldn't eat the Ofada Mama prepared until late at night not because I was hungry but I didn't want her effort to go to waste. I ended up staying at the family house because mama wouldn't let me go and pay for a hotel when they had about 4 unoccupied rooms in the house.

I wasn't happy at that re-arrangement because there's nothing I love more than my personal space but now that I think of it it saved me a lot of money as I spent about a week in "our" hometown.

The day before I left, mama called me and asked me to choose any one from a set of a ankara materials she had recently purchased.
She even wanted to take me to her tailor to sew me a dress which she'd send down once it's ready but I told her not to bother that I have a better tailor at home. Bobo, was just smiling up and down like a sheep mschewwww as if he didn't get what he wanted.

Then came the parting words, the last thing Mama asked me before I left was "what's the meaning of your name?" I have an English name which isn't biblical and when I told her, she turned up her nose. Mama is a prayer warrior and who knows she might see a vision or catch the holy ghost telling her that I am not the one for her son.

I couldn't help but notice how hard she tried to get me to loosen up during my entire stay with her reassuring words of "don't be shy, please feel free" Bobo hasn't proposed yet, so I am not holding my breath. She didn't even refer to me as Iyawo but by my name whenever she needed my attention.

I had a nice time meeting the in-law, I'd like to know if it's always this cool and easy the first time . What's your meet the in-law story?

I told my then boyfriend now husband, he brushed it off, saying she probably didn't hear me. I come dey wonder if I imagine am.
Needless to say, she doesn't like me. And her son kept giving excuses and insisting she loved me. But I like me and that's all that matters.

After 2days from 1st call, she called again that where ever i tied her son, i should go and untie him, she's begging me. I will never ever marry her son sef, even if she liked me. Her son and they whole family re full of drama. I have told him to move on and he's threatening me. God please let my plans for next year work out.

    4. Please be yourself... Sometimes the reason some mother inlaws start lashing out is that they feel their once 'sweet' daughter inlaw changed.

If you know you don't wake up by 4am. Please don't start.
Wake at a reasonable time and help out where needed.
Above all...have fun and all the best.

  11. Mine was cool.only mum in law is alive but language was a big barrier o so we couldn't say much apart from greeting and smiling to each other. I related more with the siblings and I had a nice time, they even took me to Ososo tourist hill. Packed yams, plantain, garrison and so many things for me. Twas nice afterall.
P.S I think its always better when your spouse has prepared the ground properly before you get there.

  12. Dont mind some aunty inlaws, wanting you to come and wash, clean and help her pick her son from school sometimes cus we live close@same estate. I use my attitude not to start from the beginning oo, she and her friends and other sisters said am acting oyinbo girl. So at my age I will pretend to wash or turn to slave for her? God forbid. My people please dont start what you cant continue .

But now what more can I say lol, when my mom in law has turned me to her best pally, that before she collects money from her son she must pass tru me. Maybe because I showed her love

  14. My In-laws were cool and I was very free with them, Cuz they made me feel all is well and I brought their prodigal son (hubby) back home, Cuz my nigga nor send them before, they live in same state and they don't even know where he lives.

During wedding they showed me small, and I found out they are all bunch of pretenders, they will laugh and Iyawo me in my presence but yimu immediately I turn my back.

The sister want to turn me to maga, she want to empty my wardrobe and only call/message me when she needs something. They come to the house unannounced (shebi nah me show them road to house), and I so love privacy.

In all I know them now and I know how to handle them.

  17. Meeting my mother in law and her children was cool. Immediately she saw me she just liked me straight away, until she died I was like a daughter to her even though we hadn't finalized the wedding proper. She gave me an inheritance before my marriage, very strong and beautiful woman, thank God her wish came through ( I married her son).
My brothers and sister in law don't joke with me either, everything I used for my baby was bought and paid for by them, the day I gave birth one of them a senior man of God was on the altar throughout labour and delivery (10pm-8am).
I am blessed to have them, I pray that God will continue to keep them and prosper them in all they do.
RIP to my mum in law

  19. my wife's mum is a sweetheart. her siblings are just amazing people to be with. but my father in-law, hmmm. That man drilled me on my first visit. Introduction came, the drilling was double. Na small remain, I for do frog jump sef. He was just barking orders. This is a man that even his adult children still dread him. Because of the love I have for my wife had to bear o. After wedding, Baba was telling me not to sweat it. That's how he drills prospective son in-laws. Tho I started seeing his softer side, I still can't get myself to be very close to him. Seeing his call alone send shivers down my spine. That man raised 16kids with iron fists and they all turned out well.

She's old but when she saw me, she hugged me so tight and when the time fรผr conversation came, We talked so little because Ich spreche ein bisschen Deutsch๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿค“. Lol
I'm enjoying all the love I'm getting from her.

  21. I and leboo travelled during a weekend to meet his parents. Well, I booked my hotel ahead of time and only told him when we got to the state bcos he had been announcing how big their family house is with lots of free rooms as none of his siblings are home..... His reaction.... Story for another day.

His parents were so warm and welcoming...... First son who has refused to marry.. Lol.

The mum told me of how he bought her a car on her birthday and she vehemently refused it saying she wanted a daughter in law for a birthday gift.

His parents pleaded I extend my stay oooo, but bcos of work on Monday I couldn't, so I had to make a promise to come back for a one week visit and of course would stay in the family house.

His parents call me like everyday!I was feeling one kind at some point and told le boo. He told them to reduce the calls......

Afterwards his Dad called to apologize but said he will increase the calls sef. Lol!
    Very beautiful people!
