TEACHER LIFEEvery school has a handbook. It’s that document parents sign during registration but never actually read.
In our school, the policy for hair is very clear: Boys must have a neat, almost close-shaved haircut. No punks, no mohawks, and absolutely no "Brother, abeg leave small for front."
The only exception is for children with natural dreadlocks (Dada).
For girls, it’s neat, child-friendly hairstyles,no colored, or long hair extensions.
Do otherwise, and you are going back home from the gate.
Simple, right? Well, until "The Exception" walked in.
During registration, a new parent brought in a child with a high bun. When I first saw him, I genuinely thought he was a lovely little girl. The strict instruction from the parents was loud and clear: "No one must touch his hair."
When I looked closer, my jaw dropped. Omo, the hair wasn't just long,it had been relaxed! Permed to perfection!
In my mind, I was wondering when the school handbook updated its clauses to include 'Boys with Relaxer.'
For the first term, he kept coming with the bun. But by the middle of second term, the styling escalated.
For the first term, he kept coming with the bun. But by the middle of second term, the styling escalated.
The underpart was cleanly shaved, and the front was beautifully braided with coloured beads. Haaaa!
A whole boy, stepping into a our strict hair style Kindergarten school, rattling like a tambourine every time he turns his head.
You know how children are they don't miss a thing.
And then the floodgates opened. Suddenly, other boys started showing up looking like they just stepped out of a music video shoot. We had punks, we had carvings, we had hair dyed fully to perfection.
The Head Mistress called an emergency meeting: "Teachers, this is getting out of hand. Call the defaulting parents in your classes immediately!"
So, we picked up our phones and started calling. But every single call ended the exact same way: "Ah, Teacher, why are you complaining about my son’s 'small punk'? You should be happy it’s just a haircut! A boy in your school is currently wearing braids and beads, and he is attending classes. Fix that one first!"
They had a point. You can't enforce Section A of the law when Section B is doing a catwalk in the hallway.
I took the feedback straight back to the HM, expecting a firm administrative lockdown. Do you know what she told me with a straight face?
"Ah, Miss C... you should just be praying for his parents to change."
I froze. As how now?!
Ma'am, with all the things happening in this country, with the price of fuel, electricity tariff, and my own personal prayer requests you want me to use my precious spiritual bandwidth to pray for another person's styling choices? I have better things to discuss with God than a toddler's permed hair and beads!
If the handbook says shave it, shave it! Don't turn the teacher into an intercessor just because you don't want to enforce the school rules. Biko.
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha why was the Principal scared of having a word with the parents?Probably cos they are rich?Nne na wah oh....

NOTORIOUS FOR JESUS
That year, I boarded a bus from Ilorin to Akure early in the morning.
I quietly sat into my seat at the back of the vehicle. Beside me sat another woman who seemed equally eager to arrive at her destination.
The driver sped along the highway when after some time, the bus suddenly stopped by the roadside in a small village.
A few men approached carrying ropes and dragging several goats along.
To my surprise, the driver agreed to carry them.
I wanted to protest where he planned on putting the animals but I kept my cool. Big mistake, because the goats were pushed roughly into the bus amid loud bleating and confusion.
To my greatest shock, the animals were shoved right under the back seats where we sat.
The unpleasant smell immediately filled the vehicle and made breathing uncomfortable.
The woman beside me became furious almost instantly.
She shouted at the driver and complained bitterly about the situation.
She insisted she could not sit beside animals. The driver ignored her at first and continued driving as though nothing was wrong.
The goats kept struggling beneath our seats, brushing against our legs from time to time.
I felt deeply uncomfortable and embarrassed but remained quiet throughout the argument.
The woman, however, refused to calm down or accept the condition.
She continued screaming until the driver finally became irritated.
After several minutes, he stopped the bus angrily and he ordered her to move to an empty seat at the front of the vehicle.
She quickly carried her bag and left, relieved to escape the disturbing situation.
I remained alone at the back, trapped with the goats and the unbearable discomfort. Throughout the rest of the journey, I felt unhappy, cheated, and disappointed by the entire experience. I wish I had spoken up first.
Hmmmmmm it is better to stay at the back with them than to stay in front where goat fit whisper for your ears or slap you....I hear in most of these villages, most goats are human beings.....I had my NYSC in Osun state and what i saw with goats makes me believe this 0percent oooooooooooh...really scary.

I love how Nigerian designers are getting their flowers. Gaddameett. π₯π₯π₯ππ₯π
ReplyDeleteAnytime I'm on my feed across platforms and I see how the works of our designers are bring praised across the globe-(I'm referring to high fashion.) my heart will just sweeeeeell with pride. No matter which country I go to, I will always be pro-Nigerian.
BUT, please we need more designers who know how to make really creative FEMALE CORPORATE WEAR.
This is a very big gap and honestly there are VERY FEW who are in the gap. The rest have not perfected their craft. Currently, I want to revamp my work wardrobe. I sent Saturday and Sunday going through page after page after page. Yes some are good, but it's rare that you you see something that will stun you with craftsmanship or finishing.
MOST are still struggling with trousers that are bunching at the crotch as if they are accommodating an extra peneezs.
Fabric squeezing under the armpit.
Uneven gem.
Very poor finishing and lack of variety in designs.
There are more than 20-30 types of collars, why are Nigerian designers still rolling around round neck and V neck????
Stop cutting geometric shapes, placing on gowns and calling them fashion. Please. It looks like they were sewn by hand and not something that any serious professional could even wear in a board room.
And then you will knock 80k/ 100k on top. For one strsight gown with LEGO design and round neck with excess material under armpit and long slit at the back?
I don't want to keep patronising Turkey and UK for wears. Why should I when we've got mad designers in Nigeria? But they are focused on sewing OWAMBE cloth and preparing for the next AMVCA/ Awards ceremony/ Gala night.
What of in between?
And there is so much space to shine in this niche, since there are so few designers that are even average here at best.
It should get to the stage of superior craftsmanship where our designer are sewing female corporate wears and SELLING IN STORES ABROAD.
The sun finally came out. It's a wet afternoon.
