In the letter, Obasanjo accused Atiku of inviting then Speaker Ghali Na’Abba to his office one Friday while Obasanjo was away, and giving him five million naira to begin impeachment proceedings against him. Obasanjo said the incident was reported to him by his Chief of Staff, whom he described as a trained intelligence officer. He also claimed Atiku wanted him to serve only one term and was working behind the scenes to frustrate his second term bid.
Atiku rejected the allegation completely, calling it false, unfair and impossible to verify since Na’Abba is no longer alive to defend himself. He said Obasanjo was rewriting history and using the name of a deceased man to support a claim he never made while Na’Abba was alive. Atiku argued that if Obasanjo truly had evidence, he would have acted on it during their time in office.
He also suggested that Obasanjo’s renewed hostility may be connected to their long standing disagreement over the failed third term agenda, which created a major rift between them during their administration.
The exchange has reopened old wounds from the Obasanjo Atiku fallout and revived political tensions surrounding events that shaped the 2003 elections and the years that followed.
