Akwa Ibom LG Chairman Nse Ntuen Nabbed In The US For Money Laundering.

The Maryland State Police Department, USA on Sunday morning confirmed the arrest of the Executive Chairman of Udim local government area of Akwa Ibom state, Mr. Nse Ntuen, for smuggling $82, 000 into the United States without declaring it with the Customs officials both in Nigeria and the US.
Nse Ntuen, the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), was on Friday arrested by operatives of the Maryland State Police Department at the BWI International Airport, Baltimore.
When contacted by our correspondent, Mr. Strike Thomas, an official of the Maryland State Police Department at the airport, said that the suspect only declared $5,000 when he got to the airport, adding that it was further security checks that indicated that he was still having some bundles of US Dollars in his bag.
The official who agreed to be quoted pressed further that the chairman who flew into the United Stated from London, United Kingdom was later taken to their investigation room where an additional $77, 000 was found in his bag.
It was gathered that Hon. Nse Ntuen accepted that he truly smuggled the money into the USA with the aim to use it as donations at the just-concluded Annual International Convention of the Akwa Ibom Indigenes in the United States and Canada which was held at the Marriot Hotel in Washington, DC.
The suspect was later made to write and sign a statement where he accepted that he brought in items which he failed to declared to both the Nigerian and United States Custom agencies.
The official, who spoke with our correspondent, further disclosed that the Akwa Ibom state ALGON Chairman who was held for over five hours was later released after the whole $82, 000 he admitted to have smuggled into the country was confiscated by the Maryland State Police Department.

ReplyDeleteThis is why I will never support LG Autonomy, not because it's a bad idea, but because we are not yet matured enough as a country to let this happen. The LG is the most corrupt arm of executive government, a corruption that eats deep into our Cultural Institution. Nigerians can attest to the fact that any development made in any LG is done when the governor decides to work or when he's being lobbied. LGs specialize mainly in sharing the bulk of the funds allocated to them. What happens when they run a government devoid of the interference from the state governor? Your guess is as good as mine.

Only difference is that his boss knows better not to do it in country's like UK and USA but I've heard from reliable sources that when he's going to countries like Dubai he carries large amount of money in Ghana must go (at least $200,000). Why on earth should a LG chairman have that type of money. These low life politicians are always disgracing us and this country.

the local Government chairmen are more or less political errand boys to Governors precisely because they are tied to the governors leg so if he gives them a command they must carry it out.with autonomy they will have the freedom to serve the people that elected them not the governor.

lets face it,the system of electing local governments is still part of the non autonomy.because there is no autonomy the governors most times are the ones that single handedly decide who becomes a local govt chairman.

with full autonomy,we can decide to vote for a nigerian youth who we can vouch for and who will not be an errand boy to any governor since his allocation will come direct from the centre.how can any local govt deliver dividends of democracy when some get as low as 15-20million only as allocation?

Nse Ntuen is home in Essien Udim and was last night on the State Tv station -AKBC -Tv news to say all that talk about money laundry and Arrest were false.
