A Grade 1 Area court, Aso Pada, Mararaba, has dissolved a 16-year old marriage
between one Aisha Shaibu, 27, and her husband, Usman Shuaibu, 32, ordering
the woman not have any relationship with a man for the next three months.
Delivering judgment, the presiding member of the court on Islamic matters,
Malam Danladi Musa, dissolved the marriage and ordered the woman to get
a divorce certificate from the registrar’s office.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that on December 16, Shaibu prayed
court to dissolve her marriage.
On that same date, she said that her marriage to her husband was contracted before she was conceived.
“My father-in-law and my father are friends, so my father promised him that if
my mother gave birth to a baby girl, she will get married to his son, Usman.
The mother of five also said that her husband had divorced her four times and
there was no love between them anymore.
“I asked him to give me a divorce certificate, but he said that I should go to court
and get it myself; but even before the divorce, he did not care about my upkeep.
I had to pay the children’s school fees, feed and buy clothes for them and he doesn’t contribute,’’ she said.
When asked if he understood what his wife had said, Usman responded in
the affirmative but denied her claims.
“I divorced her but the other things she said are not true; therefore I urge
this honourable court to give me time to reconcile with my wife because
I truly love her.culled
