Abia State Governor Commissions New Classroom Block In Umuahia....

A SPEECH PRESENTED BY HIS EXCELLENCY, CHIEF T. A. ORJI (OCHENDO), GOVERNOR ABIA STATE, ON THE OCCASION OF THE COMMISSIONING OF A NEW CLASS-ROOM BLOCK, AND THE LAYING OF THE FOUNDATION STONE FOR A NEW BLOCK, AT HOLY ROSARY SECONDARY SCHOOL, UMUAHIA, HOLDING AT THE SCHOOL GROUND, ON THE 26TH DAY OF MARCH, 2014

DISTINGUISHED LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!

I am very pleased to be here today to commission this magnificent building and class-room block for Holy Rosary Secondary School, Umuahia built by the Catholic Church, and also lay the foundation for a new Hostel to be built by our State.

This is another eloquent testimony of our well-known tradition of legacy projects, and a realization of our Government’s resolve to put back education at the center stage of our development and as a required infrastructure for the attainment of the new face of Abia.

/2
That is why we have not relented in our drive to restore, remodel and replace obsolete buildings in all our educational institutions, so as to achieve the quality structures and esthetic environment for the training of our young children as leaders of tomorrow. Our Government has been very conscious of the need to upgrade our physical structures, hence we have constructed over 200 class-room blocks spread across the three Senatorial zones of our State.

The importance of the projects we are commissioning, and laying a foundation for a new one, can better be understood from their historical perspectives. About 44 years ago and immediately after the Nigerian Civil War, the Governments of the Nation took over the management of all schools, including private and Missionary schools.

Despite the observed growing decay of infrastructures and discipline amongst students in many of these schools that were taken over, no Government in our State saw the wisdom to reverse the situation and bring back the Missions and private owners of acquired schools to repossess and manage them.

/3
But the Administration of Ochendo saw that need to reverse the situation, and in 2012, we commenced the return of Private and Missionary owned schools to their original owners. One of those schools that were handed over to its original Catholic Church owner is this school – Holy Rosary Secondary School, Umuahia.

This school before its acquisition by the Government was one of the famous institutions in our State, run with the efficiency and discipline of the of various Missions, and producing equally famous men and women in our society before 1970.

That was why, when I handed over this school back to the Catholic Church in 2012 and saw the deteriorating state of infrastructure and environment, I knew we had to assist restore the institution to its former glory. When I came to lay the foundation of this block of class-rooms we commission today, I asked the school what they would want me to do for them, and they replied ‘check the erosion in the school and build a Hostel block for us’. I told them that I will do as they requested.

/4
We have commenced plans to check the menacing erosion in this school and restore the landscapes, and our Ministry of Environment will soon commence work here before the rains start. We are also here today to lay the foundation of the Hostel Block for this School. For me these are promises fulfilled!

We have chosen to go further to commence the building of an overhead bridge across the road for the safety of our young students who come to this school. We will still do more to assist the school in the future.

What we are doing here today, are all clear indications that our Government is a champion for the restoration of standards and quality of education in our State. We will remain as strong partners with all those that seek to advance the same cause. Even as we have handed over private and Mission schools to the owners for improved management, I assure you that our Government will not abandon our supportive responsibilities to all schools in our State.

/5
But our Government will on the other hand, require from Private and Missionary Schools, the upholding of the standards academic pursuits and discipline in our schools, so that your institutions can once more become the strong beacons of light that showed the way and led the pack of educators in the attainment of quality education, and the training of sound minds – men and women, that was the hallmark of our past institutions, especially Mission Schools.

It is with these nostalgic feelings and expectations that I feel proud to commission this new class-room block, and also lay the foundation for a new Hostel block, here at Holy Rosary Secondary School.

I commend the new Administration of this School for the budding signs of improvement and positive changes that we are already beginning to see in this institution, especially in the areas of Science, Arts and Information Technology. I also challenge the students here to rise up and excel as young champions of the digital age, so that you can once more be proud of your alma-mater.

/6
I am also confident that the foundation that our Administration is laying for the revival of educational standards in Abia State, especially in the restoration of structures and standards, will continue to challenge future Governments of this State to sustain the standards.

Let us all - government, Private and Mission Schools -rise up together, so as to put Abia State back as a center of educational excellence in our Nation!
That future is very bright!

Thank you.

  18. This really doesn't impress me.Its just cheap publicity. How can he commission a block that's yet to be completed.....look at the landscape. Its not paved and no green area.Building looks OK but the surrounding environment is noting to write home about.

Secondly why commission this block now when they are laying foundation for another. What will happen if he waits till its all completed.

This is petty....we really should raise our expectations of what we expect from these guys.

    Am really not impressed

During one of my special trip to Abia state, as I always visit. I had the opportunity to see for myself what the governor is doing and its quite commendable. It is only an enemy will see when someone is doing great and will fail to commend. I must tell you, the previous governments left Abia with little or no work done in Abia so one shouldn't expect magic to happen over night. It will take some time but with the legacy projects being put in place by the present administration, I bet you, the next government will have a ground to stand and Abia will enjoy.

  33. n the education sector, Governor Orji has completed the construction of three model gigantic one-storey classroom blocks of 28-Room capacity in each of the three senatorial zones in Abia State. For Abia North, it is located at Ovim (Technical) Secondary School, Isuikwuato; for Abia Central, it is located at Government College, Umuahia while the one of Abia South is located at Abayi Girls Secondary School, Aba. The State Universal Basic Education Board which in 2012 received the award of the best managed State Education Board in the South East has reconstructed over 154 classroom blocks in both the primary and secondary schools across the 17 LGAs in the state. Under the directive of the Governor, the Abia State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ASOPADEC) embarked on not only renovation of schools but also carried out other educational programmes. It is on record that Abia students have continued to win laurels in most national competitions.

Glossing over the evident transformation that is quietly assuming its rightful pride of place in Abia has been the trademark of the sworn enemies of the Governor and their hordes of paid emergency social crusaders. They have consistently twisted the environmental challenges in Aba (which is not the making of Governor Orji) to malign his government. Despite the temporary setback caused by kidnapping of workers at construction sites in Aba, the present administration embarked on the reconstruction and ‘dualization’ of the most strategic road in Aba, the Aba-Owerri Road which was a nightmare before Ochendo came on board. People forget easily! Other roads like Danfodio, Azikiwe, Milverton, Brass/Faulks, Georges, Constitution Crescent were rehabilitated while a completely new access road to the Geometric Power Plant was constructed by Governor Orji.

  45. Chief Larry Essien former PPA Chairman described Uzor Kalu political ambition a huge joke

Former Chairman of PPA, Chief Larry Essien has described as huge joke plans by the ex Abia governor Uzor Kalu to run for the Senate in 2015. Essien who said he left PPA due to Kalu’s over bearing and deceitful character, argued that Kalu has no political relevance and cannot win even in his village or environ.

Essien wondered why Kalu who has been telling people that he wants to be President, is now thinking of going to the Senate on the platform of PDP, a party that has rejected him. He told Kalu to go and revive PPA and contest on that platform, instead of deceiving himself.

Essien however, confirmed that Kalu attempts to join APC were rebuffed by Tinubu who described Kalu as a spent force and confusionist without sense of direction. He warned Kalu to stop using President Jonathan’s name to draw attention to himself as he (kalu) remains, a political leper.

Kalu he said should bow in shame, as his antics can't work again, the people now know better.

  46. Education remains a key priority of the state government. Accordingly the state government has invested huge resources to that sector. There is a functional free transport services for students in Aba and Umuahia and this has alleviated the financial burden on parents. Scholarships have been instituted by the government for bright indigenes of the state to pursue academic programmes locally and overseas. Renovation of public primary and secondary schools is a continuous process and many dilapidated schools have benefitted from this gesture.

    ReplyDelete
  47. This is a positive outcome and justifies Orji's investment in education. The state also boasts of a modern e-library which would enhance reading culture among students and promote research. The health and wellbeing of her citizenry has also been a major concern to this administration.

    ReplyDelete
  48. In the event, the education sector has continued to dwindle with shocking performance year in, year out. That is where we are today as a country.
But happily the AbiaState government has taken the bull by the horn in addressing the age-long rot and challenges that have bedevilled the education sector in the state.
Before the present government came into office, the state of educational infrastructures, condition of service for workers and learning environment for students in all the state owned schools were pathetic and appalling.
The governor, Chief Theodore Orji, who is also a product and beneficiary of public school leaves no one in doubt of his government’s commitment to see that education is prioritised.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The State Scholarship Board that has been moribund was reactivated. With the reactivation of the Scholarship Board, the regular bursary disbursement to indigent Abia students was resurrected and beneficiaries have continued to enjoy it till date.
The Board has also reactivated the Overseas Scholarship Scheme through which it has granted bursaries to over 40 students of AbiaState origin studying in the United States of America, the United Kingdom, South Africa and Asia.
Not resting on his oars in providing education for the children of the state, the Governor has instituted a private scholarship scheme known as Ochendo Scholarship Scheme which took off with 25 undergraduates in various disciplines within the country as beneficiaries.
The government has also increased the fleet of buses in its Free-School-Bus Scheme for students in secondary and primary schools and had also repackaged the scheme to ensure effective and efficient service delivery. Teachers salaries and allowances are being paid regularly.
The same goes with their promotions and entitlements which hitherto were stunted by past governments. That is why as teachers were on strike in some states over the non-payment of 27.5% “teachers peculiar allowance” by their state governments, teachers in AbiaState are presently doing their work happily and wholeheartedly.
