Is Eczema hereditory?...OMG!

PROBLEM ONE
TREATMENT FOR ECZEMA

Good day beloved STELLA KORK.
I have an eczema issue that is making me loose esteem. I have discussed with my mum and she said it has no permanent cure. Is it true? I refuse to believe that. If i use nixoderm, the eczema disappears but resurfaces after a while. The whole of my back is filled with eczema. And i am a very neat person, people applaud me for that. So please i want to ask if any fellow BV has been there, what they used and if it disappeared permanently. I am very sad over this eczema.

PS: Is eczema hereditory? Because my mum and siblings have it too.

PROBLEM TWO
RASHES ON LAPS

Stella dear good day, I will like to commend you on the job you are doing. Please I need urgent help, I noticed recently that I have something like rash or pimples , I don't know what to describe it on my leg especially around my thigh area‎.. it's giving me a lot of concern, please is there anyone that has experienced something like this before?..

I'm a Senior Registrar in Dermatology and ill try to answer the questions as best as possible.
Poster 1: The problem with most of us in Nigeria is that we describe almost any rash as eczema. Eczema has a specific meaning when talking about the skin. An eczema refers to a weepy skin lesion which will be exudative. Fungal infections are what most people describe as eczema in Nigeria. Studies have shown that there is a genetic tendency to developing fungal infections clustered in some families..but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be treated. If it's a fungal infection...you've been treating it with all the wrong things. Most people use funbact A and skineal as part of their daily skin care which is wrong. It will even make the skin lesions worse later on. Another thing you may have is atopy...which just means you have really sensitive skin and it clusters in families too. So dear...because I don't have a picture to work with...I don't know exactly what you have....try and moisturise your skin well. You can switch to Sebamed body bar and milk...you mix the cream with some shea butter before using...avoid any antiseptics including dettol and all the likes
Poster 2....be right back...I've typed too much already..:-)

    6. Poster 2....You have these eruptions coming out from your follicles and it also looks like you've used steroids or toning/bleaching creams. You need to stop it ASAP...then try not to shave too close to the end cos you look like you're prone to having folliculitis. For this, just moisturise your skin well. You can also use some 5%(not 10%) benzoyl peroxide cream on the lesions till this goes...All the best...

    9. Ennie Dr, I use dettol soap. But seems not to kill the eczema. Do you mean I should leave anti bacterial soaps and use toilet soaps?

      Delete
    10. Yes please...antibacterial soaps take away our normal skin flora and makes your skin even more susceptible to opportunistic skin infections especially if you have atopy....

    1. My mum uses a shampoo " selsun". it contains some sulphide that clears eczema. It sha causes that area of her skin to dry up and peel off then it's new eczema-less skin. Sha comes back a year later or so. So if you can deal with 1year intervals then try it and see
Apply a wee amount to d affected areas and rub in.has a funky smell so might wanna do it at night only

    4. Thank you very much.
You are the only one that has gotten the treatment right because the treatment of eczema is not the same as tinea versicolor that's where a lot of Nigerians get it wrong.
Tinea versicolor needs ketaconazole shampoo. Tablets or cream.
Selsun blue too can work cos of the sulphide.
Maybe I should send Stella a mail sef cos it pains me when people use funbact A and Tura for this stuff and claim it doesn't work.
It can never work cos what we call eczema in Nigeria is tinea versicolor.
It isn't caused by dirtiness, and is common during hot periods. it also tends to reoccur often.

Atopic dermatitis is the prevalent form of chronic eczema.
It is a genetically inherited condition that tends to run in
families who also suffer from hay fever and asthma.
Atopic dermatitis will affect about 10% to 20% of people at some point in their lives.

  20. 1. I don't know if eczema is hereditary or not but my elder bro use to have much of it on his back when we were growing up and he took fulcin tab daily according to prescription. He took up to one or two sachets before the whole thing completely left. The treatment of eczema goes beyond the surface alone, it also needs to be treated within. Maybe you should see a doctor for this.

    2. I think you should also see a doctor. Maybe you are reacting to something. It is well.

Eczema is not hereditary, sometimes it could be cream reaction or from ur blood cell, Nixzodam can only clear the surface but inside the blood it will be there, go and see a dr or better go to a very good pharmacy, they will give u some tablet to take, that will clear the one in the blood and one cream like that to apply and u will not see it again, my dad has such case for yrs until he came to lagos and I took him to a pharmacy where they gave us those drugs that clear it till today but I can't remember the name as it has been a long time ago. Poster 1 & 2 share one thing in common, both are allergic reactions. Watch your food, water, type of cosmetics ( soap, cream etc) sponge you use. Try to use natural stuff and avoid synthetic. Start by using local sponge to bath or face towel, use ori (shea butter)or coconut oil as cream and plain unscented soap. It will take about 2 to 3 weeks for you to notice the difference. Meanwhile keep using the nixoderm. And yes it can be hereditary as it is an allergic reaction. Remember your genetics? You all have similar gene! Good luck.

  42. Eczema IS sometimes an allergy. A reaction to salt on the skin surface can lead to the growth of the fungi. Try treating it internally & externally but please no scrapping the skin surface o. Remember that if yours is as a result of allergy, it might always return. Avoid sweating if you can. The salt in sweat triggers it. Get a sponge for your back & scrub effectively once or twice daily while you showerfrom my personal experience, eczema can only be managed not cured.

  52. According to WEBMD.COM, doctors don't know exactly what is the cause of Eczema. But recent thinking says that the cause is a combination of the following factors: Genetics; Abnormal function of the immune system; Environment; Activities that may cause the skin to be sensitive and Defects in the skin barrier that allow moisture out and germs in.

Eczema do run in families. So, it can be HEREDITARY. One relative suffers from it? It is likely some others would.
People who love in colder climates and in urban areas with a lot of environmental pollution are also at risk of eczema.

Things that trigger it (bring about its recurrence) Soaps & Cleansers; Perfume; Dust and Sand; Chlorine; Cigarette smoke; Irritants in the environments etc.

There are recommended treatments for Eczema but I'm not going to list them here. Here is a link, use at your own discretion....

  57. Hmmmm at poster 1......i know of a remedy you can try but its harsh and i can assure you of results. Buy raw sulphur (yellow stone like), grind it and mix with brake fluid (found in vehicles). At night scrape the eczema before bathing then apply the mixture of sulphur and brake fluid. E dey pain oh so ready ur mind but you will get results. All the best.

  59. Poster 2: I think you should just see a dermatologist.
Poster 1: I actually relate to what you are saying. Eczema could be hereditary and simply because you are a neat person does not mean you can't have eczema. The same goes for being dirty, there are numerous dirty people who do not have eczema. Personally, i have experienced this and i can understand how you feel. The best advice I have for you is to GO AND SEE A DERMATOLOGIST. They will run blood tests and decide on the best treatment plan for you. My treatment plan was very extensive though and since then, not even a spot on my skin: I used nizoral tablets for a year and the nizoral cream for about three years. There was another tablet but i can't remember the name. And in the eventuality that you start treatment, don't break it in between, it is usually an expensive process but at the end its worth it.

  64. Ive had what i thought to be eczema for years now. Always had flare ups during the summer or whenever the whether was extreme. Decided to go see a doctor, turns out what everyone thought was eczema is just a fungal infection. Was prescribed LAMISIL cream, it comes in a tube. And i use seba med soap for bathing. Lamisil cost about 1500-1800. Costly but effective.

  65. Poster 2: Absolutely nothing to worry about dear. I noticed it at the back of my arms a while back.

I used body scrub, you can also use facial scrub to SCRUB those areas. They're quite smooth and clear. Also always keep affected areas moisturised.

    Cheers

  67. HELP my son was diagnosed with infantile eczema and it's been a nightmare! some recommended funbact A which I have been using for him. although the eczema seems to have disappeared it's left dark patches on him which I am sad about. Whenever I stop the funbact a mixture the eczema returns. I have taken him to a child dermatologist here in the UK but everything they prescribe (which I was using diligently before a friend told me about funbact A) doesn't work. He also reacts really bad to shear butter. They prescribed Epiderm, elocon, hydromol, oilatium none works. I want to stop funbact A mixture as I'm not happy when I see his skin. He is 3 years old. Any idea or help on what I can use to clear it would be greatly appreciated. Oyinbo doctors here say Eczema no get cure that it will clear in its own time so it's just managing it that's key so it doesn't get worse. I thought it was dry skin but when I took him to Nigeria on holiday and the hot son hit hus skin then the patches came out a lot and I realised it eczema. Thank you very much Dee

This is simply Keratosis pilaris (ker-uh-TOE-sis pih-LAIR-is)it is a common, harmless skin condition that causes dry, rough patches and tiny bumps, usually on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks or buttocks. The bumps generally don't hurt or itch. Keratosis pilaris is often considered a variant of normal skin.
