Intrauterine Insemination And IVF

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a type of artificial insemination for treating infertility which involves the injection of washed and concentrated sperm directly into the uterus, with a catheter around the time the ovary releases one or more eggs, for fertilisation.

People Who Can Opt For IUI Are:

*In cases of low sperm count or poor sperm motility (i.e sperm cells can't move fast as they ought to) in the male partner.

* Semen Allergy (Yes some women react to their partner's semen)

* Cervical mucus abnormalities (some are quite harsh that they kill off the sperm cells before they reach the egg).

* Ejaculation problems or erectile dysfunction in male partners.

*Sexually transmitted disease, such as HIV in either partner.

* Unexplained infertility.

* Severe pain during sexual penetration (vaginismus)

* Finally, in cases when a woman desires a baby but no male partner, she can opt for a sperm donor and it will be artificially inseminated.

While both IVF and IUI are types of Assisted Reproductive Therapy, here's the difference:

In IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) , an egg is fertilised by sperm outside the bodyin a test tube before the embryo (fertilised egg) is transferred into the womb while for IUI (Intrauterine Insemination), the washed sperm is directlyinserted into the womb with a catheter to fertilise the egg inside the body. IVF is more expensive and more invasive than IUI because it's a complex procedure. Hence, IVF is usually only recommended after IUI fails.

Four basic steps involved in IUI are:

*Egg production (Natural or stimulated with fertility drugs)

*Egg Tracking

*Sperm Washing

 *Insemination.

If unwashed semen is used, it may trigger uterine cramping and semen expulsion, causing pain due to presence of prostaglandins.

Success rate depends on the type of a couple's fertility problem and age (higher chances in women below 40).

Resting for ten to fifteen minutes after an IUI  has been proven to be optimal to increase the pregnancy rate.

Advantages of IUI:

* IUI is less invasive and less expensive than IVF hence it's usually the first step in treatment of infertility.

* Helps achieve faster conception than trying normal intercourse.

* IUI allows fertilization to occur naturally inside your body compared to IVF in which fertilisation is done in test tubes.

Disadvantages of IUI

*Taking fertility drugs (to stimulate egg production) increases the chance of conceiving two or more babies, and carrying multiples is medically considered a high-risk pregnancy.

* Using gonadotropin fertility medication, can trigger Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS), in which the ovaries become temporarily enlarged and leaks fluid into the abdomen.

* Inconvenient i.e the couple have to rush to the doctor's office as soon as the woman ovulates (releases an egg) because the timing of insemination is so crucial for the procedure.

* The male partner must be able to produce a sperm sample by masturbating into a jar at the clinic on a short notice to be used in the procedure.

Has anyone gone through both procedures before?
which are the best hospitals in whatever location you are in Nigeria that has services for the best IUI?

Please try as much as possible to be detailed in your explanation and references.I have noticed that a lot of couples cannot afford IVF and if IUI is cheaper, why not!

Let your detailed analysis be able to refer someone to a good hospital where they can get help....and please include prices if you know as well.

  12. Good explanation Stella.
But IUI procedure don turn into kitchen table procedure now, it's also known as the turkey basting method (from basting thanksgiving turkey). When girls try to hook a guy by fire by force, they just save his condom after lovemaking, get the semen out and put in a plastic cup, and have someone do the basting. Lol.
And I heard the success rate is high. The thing I don take this my ear hear and eyes see.

    7. Sorry....Turkey basting ain't the same as INTRAUTERINE INSEMINATION......
So Lisa Spencers take not don't start dancing while spreading wrong info with confidence.
Turkey basting means you put the semen, sperm and all in the vaginal canal with the aid of your baster(I hope I got that right)

IUI means sperm (washed sperm) devoid of seminal juice is introduced directly into the womb....
      ....
      You can thank me now..

    8. Orela, stay in your lane I know what I'm talking about, don't try to disprove it. And I know you read what I wrote up there.

All these desperate girls, do you know what length they'll go to? It's what I've seen. Have a nice day, enjoy your off day same way I enjoy mine.

      Delete
    9. Sweedie there is nothing wrong in accepting correction.. I'm not disputing turkey basting( alot of people do it..even people that opt for sperm donors only in their case the doctor may help them introduce it when it's their ovulation period) but it ain't the same as IUI
If you have a friend who had semen poured into her vagina be it from a coffee cup or condom and was told that was IUI tell her she was swindled cos it ain't IUI..... If you have seen IUI being done you won't tag it turkey basting..

      Delete
    10. @Lisa Spencers before you act so smart and so factual go back and read the link you published you would realise the syringe is used to introduce semen not washed sperm and the semen is introduced into the vagina(turkey baster method) and sperm is introduced into the uterus(IUI method)

I hope with this you get the drift...
Cos trying to point out and explain the obvious is exasperating

  14. Stella thanks for posting this. Was listening to sharing life issues on radio ystday, dats how a lady wrote in saying she wants to commit suicide bcos her womb was removed from complications of removing fibroid(still don't know ow medically a doctor can remove smone's womb weda thru complications or so). Either way she's suicidal bcos d fiancé left her as she cant have children.
This is 2015,alot of us are EDUCATED, but not ENLIGHTENED. Dan Foster had to come out and advice this lady that does she know she can still become a mother thru SURROGACY, and smone carries the baby for her, but her eggs will be used, so biologically the child is still her's.
I know this is Africa and most women want to carry dere kids bcos of what society and her in-laws will say. Whether u carry or not carry the child is still biologically urs. Instead of committing suicide you may never know God can send you a helper who wld carry ur child for you. Your husbands sperm will be fertilized with ur eggs, no need for the lady to sleep with ur hubby o. Its artificially inserminated. This will definitely be expensive, but I heard Bridge Clinic provides this.
At 2015,science has gone so far with IVF, Artificial insemination, surrogacy etc. Women need not need commit suicide over bareness. Instead of running from church to church, pls find Medical solutions if you can afford this and back it up with prayer's. Bcos dese means aren't 100percent guaranteed will work, but d success rate's are high.
They don't come cheap however, but I believe if you can afford to save up and buy a car of N1m plus, is having kids not more important. This is not to say all Barren women can become pregnant, but by Gods grace try dese medical means backed with prayers and stop stomaching insults from in-laws when smthn can actually be done with Gods favour backing you.

    1. Womb can be removed as a complication of fibroid if during myomectomy the fibroid tissues are invasive and there was massive haemorrhage intra-op... Hysterectomy (removal of the womb surgicall)) can then be done to save her life if other options weren't effective

    1. This is the thing that frustrates me about Nigerians. I had huge fibroids, small ones too outside and inside the uterus, everywhere. Fibroids isn't just about an abnormal growth. There's a reason why you have fibroids! Fibroids is a symptom of a problem.Treat the problem not just the symptoms. Remove the fibroids by a reputable doctor and hospital and back it up with prayers. Afterwards try DIM to regulate your hormones and progesterone creams to balance estrogen until the hormones are regulated. Please watch your diet too. I am now a mother of children.

  33. Problem with IUI is if there is a blocked Fallopian tube or something wrong with the woman's Fallopian tube it won't work. So first make sure u do a HCG of is it HSG to check the status of the tubes before going for the IUI. It is quite cheap and can be done by most doctors . Baby dust to all expectant mothers. The procedure was n0ot easy at all i wont even lie, i had to use up all my savings and also had to sell the gold jewellery i inherited from my late grandma. To top it all up my hubby did not support me financially and went ahead to have series of affairs with both single and married ladies while i was busy with injections and hormone therapy. i used both Roding and Bridge Clinic, but i never got pregnant and currently in debt. i ve told my husband to go ahead to give me a divorce because i feel quite useless as a woman,5 good years and not a single child................ the pressure is UNBEARABLE. 57. madam fat do not I repeat allow any stupid mother in law and her son who unfortunately is your husband frustrate you....don't even assume the position of pity at all...they are not God...don't beg them or make yourself small in their eyes. shameless lot....God will do it for you one day....like I used to tell my husband, if I don't have a child from him it will be from someone else.....I did ivf 3 times it failed, but the 4th one I did with donor egg succeded now I have my twins....I endured hubbys bullshit for 10 years..when he decided to divorce me, to me it was good riddance to bad rubbish....am sure he tought the iVF was going to fail as usual but God put them to shame...now I don't even send him and his mother when I have my babies to think about....they are the ones wallowing in shame....

just be positive and God will give you your children...let him be sleeping around like a dog, he will not get any woman pregnant. you are his legal wife and God will not put you to shame..

sorry am being insultive but am just so annoyed....why people think they can play God and treat people anyhow is beyond me....can your mother in law manufacture babies? mschweeeeeeew

  58. anonymous 02:01 i hope you wont waste your life in the name of marriage with one man.....leave the dog and go look for a solution for your life oh...don't wake up one day and find out you are past menopause. Get out of that marriage and start another relationship, no man is worth the sacrifice abeg

  59. Fatima sorry I am going to be candid with you.....why kill yourself cos you cant have children? failed IVF and you are owing here and there yet you still wanna keep frustrating yourself? when its Gods time he will do it and yes he might be trying to teach you patience and learning to wait on him...I waited 9 years, had 3 failed IVF, fibroid surgery etc and was done with stressing myself....wanted to adopt but hubby refused and said we should try again....thank God he answered us and gave us twins....please don't tell me you believe in God or walking in faith if you cant wait for his time....why go into debt and 8 failed ivfs cos you desperately want a child.....it doesn't make sense....stop thinking what people will say, stop wallowing in self pity...God is never late, relax and begin to live life....I got to a point one day in my prayers and said God, whether you give me children or not I will praise you and live life to the fullest....sorry I sound harsh but you just need to stop all this desperation and truly begin to enjoy life....if worry or tears could help you am sure you would be carrying your children now....focus on other things, be happy and you will see God surprise you. He is not a wicked God
