Can Fashola Really Go To Jail? - Etcetera's Must Read.

The APC is now being haunted by the saying, “When you point one finger, there are three fingers pointing back at you.” If it knew, it wouldn’t have accused Goodluck Jonathan of running a very corrupt government.

Most times, we forget to listen to the voice of reason that says, “Look in the mirror, brother. You might just be talking about yourself.”

It is now clear that the APC focused on the speck in Jonathan’s eye and ignored the log in their own eyes.”

Who would have thought that just few weeks into a new regime in Lagos State, Fashola would be engulfed with the following accusations – Drilling of just two bore holes with N139m, remodelling and equipping of the official residence of the state’s Chief Judge at N510m, reconstructing of a car park with N640m, spending N300m to relocate cables, N175m to replace the railings of a pedestrian bridge, N220m on the facility management of the Lagos State University College of Medicine, N619m on surface repair of a road, N1.2bn on the construction of an unidentified multi-storey building, N1.6bn on the construction of a 48-bedroom hotel.

These things don’t seem like what a person as intelligent as the former governor would do; especially for those of us who regard him as one of the very few bright spots of our democracy.

In fact, I am still of the belief that in the annals of corrupt governors in Nigeria, his place remains to be seen. But the question here is, can the Lagos State government come out with such weighty accusations without having evidence to back them up?

It was in the papers that “some in the former governor’s circle” are worried he might face charges. If that happens and if he is found guilty and if it results in conviction and if he ends up in prison-yes, four ifs-then considering his achievements in Lagos State, all other former governors from other states (especially the eastern states) should have long since been in jail awaiting his company. But yet again, does any governor go to jail in Nigeria?

Over drinks at a bar around Omole Estate, Ikeja last Monday, a friend who works in one of the ministries at Alausa laughed as he finished off his beer.
“Everything’s messed up, and nobody goes to jail,” he said. “Etcetera, that’s your whole article right there. Hell, you don’t even have to write anything more.
Just write that.”

I put down my phone. “Just that?”

“That’s right,” he said, signalling to the waitress for the cheque. “Everything’s messed up, and nobody goes to jail. You can end the piece right there.”
Sounds funny but sincerely, “Nobody goes to jail” should be the mantra of our democracy, one that has seen virtually almost every public office holder embroiled in obscene criminal scandals — and nobody went to jail. Nobody, that is, except Alamieyeseigha, and that was probably because of the attention he brought on the nation as a result of his dress sense from the UK. And the Federal Government has apologised for the mistake by granting him full pardon.

If Fashola is found guilty of these allegations, he should face the music. That’s the way the system is supposed to work. But a veritable mountain of evidence indicates that when it comes to government officials, the justice system not only buckles at punishing criminals, it has actually evolved into a highly effective mechanism for protecting them. This institutional reality has absolutely nothing to do with politics or ideology — it takes place no matter who’s in office or which party is in power.

To understand how the machinery functions, you have to look back, at least, at Obasanjo’s time in Aso Rock, as case after case of financial malfeasance was pursued too slowly or not at all. Indeed, the shocking pattern of no enforcement with regard to corrupt public officials is so deeply ingrained in our democracy that it raises a profound and difficult question about the very nature of our society: whether we have created a class of people whose misdeeds are no longer perceived as crimes, almost no matter what those misdeeds are.

The Justice Department has evolved into a bizarre species of social surgeon serving this untouchable class.
punch cullage.

Thank you for this writeup ETC...I totally Enjoyed it!

I like the way you added the ''if's''.
Fashola ruled Lagos for 8yrs and in that space of time Lagosians saw positive change in their state.
IF Fashola is guilty and there is evidence to prove that he is,then let him face the charges. However If you ask me I still stand on my ground that the recent controversy trailing him is a witch hunt...Somebody should prove me otherwise!

''Somebody is playing games somewhere and manipulating things that are not as if they were''

    4. In Nigeria, nobody goes to jail for corruption, you can be murdered through a cruel way as jungle justice just for stealing little things like laptop, goat, pepper, etc but you walk away when you stealing huge amount running into billions, when you're corrupt, so in Nigeria, it pays to steal big, and be corrupt than steal small. If fashiola doesn't go to jail, know It's not a fashiola things, it's a Nigerian thing.

  5. Fashola, changed the face of Lagos positively, but he's not a saint. He's a politician. In Nigeria.

In rumours like this, there's always an atom of truth.

He should be probed abeg,APC or not.

If he isn't, this whole change mantra will be considered a sham.

Oh,and Etcetera, as usual, beautiful piece.

    More ink to your pen.

  6. We all know who is working behind the scene! Its just a way of disqualify him possibly ministerial appointment from Baba.

Lagos has changed and we all know who changed it. The talk of the prison far from the reality.

  7. The fact that he did good and evident work doesn't automatically mean he didn't also steal. But yes, we need evidence

  8. Damn! Who would have thought?

I do find all these difficult to believe though. But what do I know? *shrug*

Whatever they intend doing, I do hope the Committee that would probe or investigate would be an impartial one & not one planted by some rascals as a means of witch-hunting an 'enemy'.

On second thoughts, setting up an impartial Committee is as good as trying to drill a borehole in the desert - Impossible!

  9. Indeed everything's messed up and nobody goes to jail. This country is a huge mess! It is only the innocent that goes to jail. Etcetera you're a good writer and I love you.

  10. @stella witchunt or not, he fashola admitted to all the aforementioned.

Semding one to jail is hard because fasholas argument in court will be simple...he doesnt directly award contract. The perm sec does neither does a governor sign cheques.
Now, fashola will hardly go to jail for any of the above because they followed due process by being approved in the budget by the house of assembly, and the state procurement bureau. Like i said in a previous post, theres a difference between good or bad and right and wrong. The problem now is the checks and balances set up to checkmate issues of contract inflation(which is what u will pin all the above on) r also nt helping. The house of assembly and procurement bureau. Now, the right thing to do as a gov is to cancel or remove such outrageous contracts from the budget or better still svale the price down, which is what fashola failed to do.
The same reason fashola wont go to jail is almost similar to why bankole didnt go to jail either over the cars abi na car loan he took.

Now, those saying that the nass get too much allowance, no 1 can go to prison for that because even though it is morally wrong for them to earn soo much, it is actually not illegal and mine u, the nass doesnt determine how much they earn rather its the job of rmafc.

  14. They should do their investigations properly and if all these allegations are true, he should be probed. I like Fash but the law isn't meant for some selected persons but for all so none should be seen as being above it.

  15. It's a tough case for Buhari cos Fashola really played a key role during his campaign (cash). Buhari's hands are tied, PDP are not going down without a good fight. *It is wa!

  16. Na wa, why won't we allow dis whole thing be? It's such an irony that we Nigerians can't be pleased at all: A man sacrifices his self interests against d wishes of some 'untouchables' in d state so that he can bring much desired change n democratic dividends in Lagos and after his tenure,witch_hunters who felt he refused to follow the normal dictates of sharing d money with them from noewhere started acting out a script and we Nigerians who don't know d genesis of anything would open mouths n start talking; ETC knows nothing about dis man, Nigerians do not know anything abt him,U just read something up in d papers or anywhere and we jump to conclusions not knowing that the person(s) who did d write up had something in his mind which is, Nigerians or d masses reacting the way we are right now. Wow, Nigeians, sometimes we are our very own enemy doing each other, may God heal our land and deliver us from bad belles n evil people.

  20. it means that no one should ever do good in Nigeria.you know what??? if this guy fashola is rubbished then the next governor will simply embezzle everything and wait for prosecution because there is no need to even try to do anything in this ungrateful perpetually complaining country

  22. All Nigerian rulers are as corrupt as ever, all of them. They are all the same. Fashola included. I know he worked at first to confuse people before he did his looting. This has been their smart ways of deceiving the masses to vote then in for second time again just to loot esp the governors

I can't ' vouch for him like most of u are doing here. He may be guilty as hell. He's a politician. Witch hunt wetin.

  23. APC thrived and won on propaganda, but they forgot that the measure you use on others is what you'll get back. Fashola didn't see this coming at all. And I don't pity him one bit. He should have known better than to join a party of desperate, greedy and deceitful politicians

Why don't you mind your own business and stop poking your dirty nose into others affairs. People are right to talk to money maker the way they do because his behavior is unacceptable and should not be tolerated. What is bad is bad and when we see bad we should speak out.
You are the kind of person that will always support bad and evil things and turn a blind eye to it. It's this type of attitude we are trying to stop from happening in Nigeria. Your comments absolutely stinks and if you continue with that attitude here you will be run out of here. Lets set good examples and not support negativity like you do.
If you don't have anything positive to say then shut your dirty trap, you're not the only one that can come for people or call people out. You are a dirt bag low life that should be ashamed of herself.

  31. Etcetera please focus on your back up profession of writing of which you are not even a trained journalist. You only fell back on this due to hunger. Otherwise concentrate on getting a proper job and leave Fashola alone. You are a failed musician how does that make you an authority on state matters of which you do not even know the half of the truth. You are so gullible that you have based your write up on supposed allegations and made up figures. PLEASE LEAVE FASHOLA ALONE. When you achieve half of what Fashola has done you can then do a write up. But for now please be quiet.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Anony 00: 37, you are so damn ignorant. One must not be a trained journalist to write. The only thing nut heads like will say to him... That he's a failed musician. ie to you. I guess when you say that it makes you feel better where you failed. Well he's found some other talent ; writing. Probably you have failed on your own carrier & you do not have or blessed with another talent like Etc. Why are so troubled? That Etcetera has so many facets? That he raises valid points for the masses to ponder about the goings of their beloved Nigeria? That he knows how to send his message across? That almost every sane person rushes to read his chronicles when he drops one; though they might not agree with him?? Just suck it up , get over it , read his write ups & let some sense into your skull.
