Nigeria's largest telecoms operator, MTN, has been slammed with an unbelievable record-breaking fine of N1.04 trillion by the Nigerian Communications Commission over failure to disconnect subscribers with unregistered SIM cards.
According to Technology Times, a news platform, which broke the story on Sunday night, NCC fined MTN Nigeria “for allegedly undermining efforts by the Nigerian government to tackle security challenges and the war on terror and allied crimes, as the telecoms operator has allegedly refused to deactivate unregistered mobile phone lines on its network”.
A top official of MTN Nigeria who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the fine.
“This fine is unprecedented in the history of Nigeria. The amount is even bigger than the entire budget of the Federal Government of Nigeria. It is enough to make the operator close its operations in the country," the source said.

DeleteThe problem I have with the registration is that the true identities of the users cannot still be ascertained, bcos anyone can send any errand person to go buy a sim and register to an unknown address. And they can still perpetrate evil with the registered sim cos it's under a bogus identity.
DeleteWhat the federal govt should be thinking of doing is to invest into the identity finger print data to register every Nigerian. Big man or poor man, u would have to go thumb print at the center urself. U can't send anyone to do that for u. That way each person's identity is logged into a central system that the police, customs and immigration will have access to. Therefore minimizing the crime rate cos it'll be easy to find and run a check on anyone caught by thumb printing them on the spot. Like its done in saner climes. This is what I think should be priority.

I just need some light on this cos after reading the fine which CBN gave to First Bank and some other bank earlier today;i became confused cos i was told firstBank is owned by the government,and i know CBN is owned by the government too..
So Basically its the "Government" paying A fine to the "government" abi...so who is the GOVERNMENT then? And how does all this run..

Firstly, Firstbank is not owned by the government.

The fine is an income to the federal government purse.
NCC is a federal government owned company likewise the CBN.
Hope you get this simple explanation.

MTN don't get to ever pay up any fine. When the porting ish came up, NCC clearly made it open that no network should do a porting advert as the only porting advert will be done by NCC. This debate was still going on when the "I don port o" gingle came up and the issue of the said sum they were fined with, died a natural death.
