WHO Says Two-Thirds Of People Under 50 Have The Incurable HERPES

More than 3.7 billion people under 50 have the highly-infectious and incurable herpes virus that causes sores around the mouth and sometimes on the genitals, a World Health Organization report said.

There are two forms of the herpes virus and both are most often transmitted without symptoms, but for those stuck with the lifelong infection, painful and embarrassing sores can be recurring.

Two thirds of the global population under the age of 50 are infected with the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), which tends to cause cold sores, the WHO said in report published this week.

A full 87 percent of Africans under 50 have the virus which is transmitted by mouth-to-mouth contact or through saliva, as do three quarters of those in the eastern Mediterranean and western Pacific regions.

In comparison, “only” 39 percent of men and 49 percent of women in the Americas, and 61 percent of men and 69 percent of women in Europe have the virus, the WHO said in a statement.

HSV-1 mainly causes cold sores and blisters around the mouth, as opposed to HSV-2, which is almost entirely sexually transmitted and causes genital herpes.

But new estimates indicate HSV-1 is also an important cause of genital herpes, with some 140 million people between the ages of 15 and 49 infected with a genital variant of HSV-1, the Geneva-based organisation said.

“HSV-1 has the potential to be transmitted from the oral area to the genital area through oral sex,” WHO medical officer Sami Gottlieb told reporters.

Along with the 417 million people believed to have the HSV-2 infection, there are more than half a billion people under 50 who have genital infections caused by the two herpes viruses.

Even if u used 100 condom it can not save u from herpes. Abstinence is the watch word.

I noticed something on sdk that is very disturbing. The fact you some ladies exchange sex for favours doesn't mean all ladies do it. The fact that runs girls marry white men doesn't mean that all the ladies that marry white men where one time big runs babe. The fact that u have done 20 abortions doesn't mean that there r no virgins.

No one is trying to be holy or criticise anyone but the truth is that there are exceptions. Don't try to justify yourself to say after all everyone is doing it. Everyone is not doing it. Speak for yourself.

There are many women who are successful. They worked themselves out. They never did runs. They never stole. Most of them from nothing. So don't say u didn't have a choice that is why you did runs. Change ur thinking and your life will change. The first 1m j got was through visualising, believing, prayer, working hard etc. I wrote a cheque of 1m and put it on my wardrobe. One day I found myself with 1m. Whole some runs girls have to sleep with 100 men to get 1m. That's life.

I wanna create awareness cos people do not know about it and do not know if they have it. But will do that much later. I will try and reply anyone seeking answers here. I have them. Worry not. Its incurable but it's not deadly and not a death sentence. Will advise u on how to handle yours if you have it.

  18. Funny story. I have lived overseas all my life and I have always known that I am a carrier of herpes. That is how I had a comprehensive Std test in nigeria. That was how it came out negative. Lobatan! I decided to redo the test in another pathology centre. Negative The amount of people that medical practitioners in Nigeria have killed Ehn. Anyways, most people running their mouths here shouting oral sex and nonsense are carriers. Also, some parents pass it on to their kids through kissing. Some carriers don't show any signs and may never know till they die. Plus it is not a death sentence just an extra component in your DNA. FYI I am a doctor

  22. A lot of people have herpes but do not know. They are carriers. And she'd the virus without knowing. Some people say they have been sexually inactive for 2 years or so and all of a sudden they have the sore. U can get it and not show symptoms and it can spring up one day. Condoms cannot protect you. Once you have a sore on your mouth or genitals, you are shedding the virus. Avoid kissing or having sex at that point till it goes away. Take acyclovir and it will disappear almost immediately. Herpes is not really about being clean, kissing and no sex, Maintaining one sexual partner or anything you can think of. And our naijaa lab are not equipped to detect it. So all you have to do is pray ur partner doesnt have it. But unlike HIV, it does not kill. You just have to take your medications. Be honest with your partner and keep a healthy lifestyle. Some people suffering from herpes go years without an outbreak. Even giving birth, you can but watch it! Once you are pregnant, a lotta options are open for u. U can give birth vaginally or thru' C-section. Its only in naija that people don't really know about herpes but from my experience with doctors abroad and pregnant women abroad (cos it's like having malaria in the US apparently), some start taking valtrex or acyclovir from conception till they give birth. I no get strength for that one. U can also start yourself on meds in the last month of pregnancy so that you won't have an outbreak in the vagina when you wanna give birth. If you have one during birth, you must make your doctor know and do a CS cos herpes to newborns are deadly. U don't wanna go down that route. If u just contacted herpes when you got pregnant, CSECTION is your best option. U can breastfeed unlike HIV, herpes virus doesn't pass thru' breast milk but if u have a sore on ur breast, please do not breastfeed from the breast until completely healed. U can continue acyclovir while breastfeeding, it is completely safe. I can't think of more now but if I see more questions, I will answer. I remember when I told my fellow mum to be on baby center that it's like people are not aware of it, they talked to me like am stupid. Like which rock did u crawl out of. Ad for bitch and boss of this blog or whatever! It is a global disease. Not restricted to naija. Like I said..... Google the statistics for US and other 3rd world country. u will be shocked. Ciao!! Goodluck

  23. Don't have it, don't know what it is. Don't care to know. The good thing is that there is a vaccine available. People should go get vaccinated. Some are combined vaccine with cervical cancer vaccine.
