Nigerian Loses Job Offer In The UK Because Her Hair Was Braided

A young Nigerian lady living in the United Kingdom claimed she had a job offer withdrawn by a company just because her hair was braided.

Bournemouth University graduate, Lara Odofin, wrote about the discrimination she had faced in a post on Facebook on Monday and was astonished when it quickly went viral and was shared 3,000 times.

She also posted a picture of the email she had received from the company, which read: "Unfortunately we cannot accept braids – it is simply part of the uniform and grooming requirements we get from our clients.
"If you are unable to take them out, I unfortunately won't be able to offer you any work."

In her own post, she wrote: "So after being accepted for a position within this company, they have TAKEN BACK the offer of a position on the grounds that if I do not take my braids out.
"Naturally I simply cannot work for the company.

"This type of discrimination should not still be happening in this day and age and any establishment still condoning such practices deserve to be shamed and criticised."
She added: "Being a black woman means that to have a long term hairstyle that stays neat is always going to be a problem.
"Having braids that last for two to four months and can be packed neatly and styled to however a workplace requires is the solution to this problem.
"No workplace has any right to forbid you from this. This is discrimination and I am disgusted that I had to be subject to such behaviour in this 21st century. It is not okay."
Ms Odoffin, who has chosen not to name the company, then said: "I will be speaking to a lawyer about this tomorrow and will be contacting the company."
Both of her posts, which quickly went viral, attracted a huge amount of support from others.

One woman wrote: "Disgraceful!!! Huge complaints needed!"
Another said: "Disgraceful. PLEASE name and shame these morons."
Another woman wrote: "You look beautiful with braids. Any company who wouldn't take you on because of this is idiotic and racist! Good luck with your legal action girl, not that you'll need it."

  1. Lawyer about what ? Fine they discriminated but that's their rule you need to respect that too. Na you build the organization for them? If someone offers you a job and then decides not to again, then how is that wrong? The organization has every right to how they want their workers to be. It's just like working in a bank here in Nigeria, there are certain outfits you can't wear and certain hairstyles you can't do so please, take a chill pill.

    1. You definitely live in nigeria where the lack of basic himan right n freedom frm discrimination has been embedded in your blood. Goodluck being subject to discrimination!!!!

    2. Maybe you don't know. No one has the right to sack you suddenly without even doing anything wrong. If she takes then to court, she will win. Her hair is should have been well stated in the staff handout and all before giving her employment letter. If she can prove that it wasn't stated, well they are in trouble.

Stop comparing Nigeria where nothing works and people don't know their rights.

    3. shut up. If you do not know, please ask. Discrimination is highly illegal in a country like UK. If she sues, shes sure gonna win. you go Lara, wish you luck on this, i wish you named the Company though

    5. Lol anon you really dont know much now, do you? Things do not work that way here in the Uk. You cannot offer anyone a job and then decide not to again. No wonder your employers in Nigeria can continue to enslave you. A country that has no functioning labour laws!

    6. Abeg she needs to chill, even here in Nigeria ladies have hairstyles they can't make and the length it shld be.... if she wants the job, she can go with a different hairstyle that is preferred by the organisation, she shld only call it discrimination if other white counterparts are on braids and not sanctioned. I see no discrimination here, just what the organisation wants.

If your country system do not work or you do not know your left from right allow those who know their fundamental right to express it. Some of you do not even have voters card to express your right during election, just to end up here acting like market women.
The way some of you reason is appalling,God have MERCY. The system work over there so she is damm right suing the company.

A lot of people here live abroad and it is not by making noise. I work in the HR department and I make bold to say that this lady has no case. She doesnt even have a contract with them. You guys scream racism at the slightest opportunity like confused human beings.

I live in the UK and where I work they are even stricter with the whites because they like to misbehave and take the piss. No dreadlocks and a lot more.

Let her go and hire the lawyer and let's see who loses in the end, racism my kinky foot.

Company's rules are company rules. The only time you scream racism is if they permit certain people and disallow others.Go and read what racism means and come back with something reasonable.

    11. @Anonymous 16.50 smart lady, clap for yourself madam HR your job failed you. Am sure you have treated people badly as HR staff that's reason you do not find anything wrong with the company.
I am sure you forgot braid are African identity same way weaves are white identity. There's a system in place for such cases and the law will take it's place. She don't need to have a contract with a company that infringed on her right, she's got evidence. You live in the UK, i live in Afghanistan, but i know when my fundamental rights are infringed by anyone.
Whether she succeed or not, it's her right to take the company to the court. You're not a lawyer and do not know everything about her case, that's for the lawyers to determine.
As someone living in the western world, she have every right to take the company to the court as the issue is a case of discrimination.
A lot of Nigerians abroad over look such crimes, some are afraid to even complain to relevant authorities to avoid being discouraged/deported. We should encourage those who speak up not slander them.

    12. First of all let me speak as a person who has lived and worked with western establishments, both the company and this lady have valid points. Unfortunately the lady didn't accept the company's policy, But it doesn't mean that they were wrong. This is dicy because she's black...and as such, would be viewed as 'racism'. I've had to compromise certain things to accommodate my terms of employment in a UK firm as well. So I understand that some companies can have stringent rules but mean no harm. Their mistake, however, was that they didn't go about it the right way. They should have discussed this with her in a subtle way, perhaps negotiated, but not terminating her offer of employment based on something she wasn't given an opportunity to decide upon.. she may have even decided to adjust to suit their policy. They didn't give her that chance, this is the only fault I find here that makes them guilty. Not their policy in particular.

I guess brazilian hair is our identity as well.. racism is solely when you're judged based on your race she did not lose the job because she is black she lost it because she is stupid.. the company has clear guidelines on appearance which apply to everyone..

I hate when people throw the rave card every minute something is not in their favour.
Companies can set rules on appearance e.g. uniform etc.. as long as it does not flout basis rights...

    14. Sisi Eko thanks, you just wrote part of the points i was trying to make. The company made mistake on their part with the way they handled the situation. They should have stylishly discuss with her about her hair style as part of their interview. Base on her answer, they let her go as if she failed the interview but not issue offer letter then terminate with flimsy excuse BOLDLY written.
By so doing, they have place their company for lawsuit.
@Anonymous 01.51, you are as daft as your comment as usual no need rambling with you. You are fast to claim you live in the UK,long hissssss. I am part of that system so shushh it. You might hate when people throw "RAVE" "race" card but as far as am concern, you are still a foreigner in that country one day you will face yours. I had my own issue with police officers in the UK years ago,
i took them to IPCC (Independent police complaints commission) as i know my right was infringed upon,i was treated badly.
Their "TOP Madam"called me weeks later to apologise to me as i wanted no compensation just an apology.
Companies have rules but such rule can come before interview or during interview as part of their guideline. The lady in question have valid case,it's upto a good lawyer to win her case.

Her name clearly shows she is African so if they were racists, why would they even bother with her at all when she was not the only one that applied for the job?

@ Jaymoore, you seem to be mixing up issues, your rights was infringed upon is clearly different from this lady's case. The bone of contention here is if the Company's action can be deemed racist!!.
Let's try and be objective when we address issues .

On the long run you will be the one to lose. Like you wanna contact your lawyer for what? To sue the company for discrimination or racism? Is it your father that owns the company? An organization has every right to terminate your appointment. Even banking industry here in Nigeria and hospitals won't accept the hair you have on. You have to look cooperate.

It must involve things like late coming for a very long period of time and you must have been given warnings for it to pull through! That is why I love the UK compared to Nigeria, America. There are strong laws protecting workers. Something Nigeria should look into! So please this lady has a strong case!!

What are you contacting your jobless lawyers for?

Perhaps, it is a conservative organization and they don't want staff distracting others with long coloured braids??
If they have a dress code which all staff must adhere to,na you wan change am or will you be an exception?

An employer has the right to tell you how to dress to a workplace so if you are not comfortable with it,move on and go and channel this energy in looking for another job.

The company have got rules and if one isn't ready to abide by it,they might as well let go...no biggie and nothing racist bout it.
Be it 21st century, these things still happen and it's normal.

Most blacks in the Uk go on braids..making of hair there is horrible..the prices are outrageous..you can spend between 70-150 pounds just to fix simple centre pattern..whenever I travel,I prefer to braid o..i no get 100 pounds to fix hair..the weather there too dey help..you can go on braids for 3 months and it won't smell so bad..just wash n dry often and you're good to go..

Very racist of the company. If the offer was taken back probably because she had some facial piercings or even tattoos,it really would have been understandable, but to take back a job offer all cuz of neatly styled braids, not even dreads, then that is totally unacceptable. These brits just keep reaching new heights with their racist acts.Stupid idiots!!

  30. It's amazing as some people here don't see anything wrong in what the company has done.

Firstly, the company is supposed to state their rules clearly to her and make sure she signs an agreement before giving her an employment letter. If it's the company rule, let it be stated in black and white. If there is no rule stating what I can do and what I cannot do, I don't think I should be sacked for it.

I understand a lot go on in Nigeria and people don't know their rights. So instead of being ignorant and telling her to stop claiming victim, it's best sit and learn. I like that she is speaking to lawyers, they will be able to advise her appropriately

  35. Nigerians and our first class stupidity. Oyinbo man talk so there is nothing wrong with it abi? Idiots, all of you that are saying the country has the right to withdraw their offer. That is why there is no hope for Nigeria. This happened in the UK where there are laws against discrimination. If you do not understand the laws in the UK, I would suggest you STFU and stop trying to pose like you too know and that she is being stupid. What are the grounds for deciding they do not want braid? They are different from oyinbo hair, but were they untidy, did she look unruly? So next time it will be sorry but unless you can bleach to become closer to our colour we cannot accept you and you guys will still be saying it is their right abi?
So if you feel they are well within their right, then that means if you walk into a shop and they turn you out because you have braids and they do not accomodate people like that, I suppose you will not shout racism abi? You will say they are well within your right as it is their shop abi? Idiots, fools all of you!!!! Always trying to form that you are an expert at what you do not know. When it is not racism, you will be racism e.g. when your brother is caught on a train without a ticket and then after arresting him, they find he has no visa and they deport him, you will say it is racism. But when you see racism where colour or ethinicity has nothing to do with ones ability to perform the job you are saying it is not racism. If they had just withdrawn the job and given a generic reason like - unfortunately we have decided not to go ahead with this position, they would have been well within their right. However to tell her it is because of her braids is against the law.
Instead of you to have an open mind and try to educate yourself on this global world we live in and learn to defend your dignity, you are accepting whatever is thrown your way. So if banks in Nigeria come up with rules that women must only have brazillian weaves/wigs, do you think that is acceptable? or that women must perm their hair? Meanwhile men will be allowed to do whatever they want, does that sound right? Or if they say that only slim women will be employed, is that right? To even bring up an example of what is done in Nigeria is the worst possible thing I can imagine. What is Nigeria? A country where we have tribal and religious discrimination? Is it because our mainly uneducated and semi illiterate educated mass do not know the word discrimination you think it is not happening in Nigeria? A country that does not have laws, the law courts, judiciary and police do not follow the laws, that is a country you are bringing as an example? In fact may thunder fire those stupid fingers you used to type this rubbish. Olosho!!!!!

  36. This is an example of how dim we are in Nigeria? Really and this lady below will be someone's mother and someone's wife one day? What intelligence does she have to offer? My dear, braids are worn predominantly by black people. It is like saying we are accepting only blue eyed candidates, my dear it means they are looking for "WHITE ONLY" candidates and don't you dare suggest blue contact lenses because if you do, you are dimmer than I think.

Thank God their ancestors were not taken across the ocean for the slave trade because if they were, there would still be slavery in the United states. They are all the sort that would have insisted, " No, master says I am his slave so I am his slave. He says I am not a human being and I cannot do anything, that we cannot survive without masters". XOXO MYSTERY is that worst of them all, stupidity and more stupidity. Some people just open their mouths to expose their stupidity and they don't even realize how stupid and unknowledgeable they are but they insist on spouting their village square views, assuming everybody is like them. Please the below listed should try and keep away from making comments. Read other peoples comments for some months and maybe you can broaden your mind. You dont even know what racism is. 43. For me I DO NOT see any RACISM or something close to it here. Braid is not an African identity. Let's stop creating issues where there are none. Many indigenous companies in Nigeria also have their regulations - no low-heeled/colourful shoes, no skirts below the knee, no coloured-braids/hair extensions, NO NIGERIAN DRESSING - agbada, lace, ashoke, abada, iro/buba, et al, yet we ALL comply without complaining. Why are MOST Nigerian workers MANDATED to wear suits to work everyday (except Fridays for some). Are suits African dressing? Abeg make una take a CHILL PILL.

    1. Actually, braids are African identity. If she had weaves, would it have been acceptable?
It's amazing that we are so lost that we are not even aware.

Did she have braids when she did the interview? Obviouslyso, for reference to be made to the braids, that means the company has seen the braids. Why didn't they raise the issue then?
They are either just looking for an excuse to cow her to submission before she even starts work or they are just a bunch of racists. So only westernized hair/hairstyles are acceptable? I'm sure they would throws fit if she the carries her natural hair. Bigots!!!!!

  45. Nigerian people and their backwardness. If you don't live abroad, please just keep quiet cos you guys don't know jack. She knows the laws and know he rights, that's why she's taking them to court. I live in the US and I know how much discrimination we face especially in the south.. Braids are worn by blacks and that's the best hairstyle and cost effective style. Do you guys even know how much it takes to fix human hair or even synthetic?????
Giving rules such as not having braids on is called RACISM. U live in Nigeria so u can never understand why. Even whites know that braids are the best hairstyle blacks wear. They could have simply said she needs to care for her braids neatly rather than saying they can't employ her except she takes the braids off. That's pure RACISM in the western world. So far her braids are near and don't have flashy color she's good to go and I pray she wins and she will get paid handsomely.
U Nigerians need JESUS in your lives. You always OK with whatever your govt/ employer dish out to u. Come to the western world and see how people stand for their right. SAY NO TO DISCRIMINATION

  46. If it's in the company bylaws in black and white, then she has no case. If the company is just coming up with the no-braid law now then she has a case. They know she's black/foreign based on her ethnic name. She must have said something for the company to withdraw their employment, if she has taken it out, this post won't be here today. I'm guessing the company has an image to portray.
Even in corporate America, there is so much an individual can do regarding dressing/attire.
There was a case recently with an airline about the attendant refusing to serve alcohol because she recently converted to Islam (but part of her job description is to serve alcohol, and she has always served alcohol before converting). Now she wants to sue the airline. Let's be careful with this lawsuit thing my people.

    1. Exactly! I meaan her name is clearly not white and her skin, she blacker than me yo. So if they were truly racist they would've thrown her cv in the bin when they saw her name. Or at worst one of the interviews when they saw she was black not gotten a job or phone call for more interview. She got the job which means their "racist" selves were willing to have a foreign named visibly black person work for them and their only criteria in question is remove ur braids. If she had piercings is it racist? If they said cover ur tatoos is it racist? Please get out of here, even us in primary school weren't allowed to wear braids in our own fatherland. Na cornrow or gorimmapa only thing accepted. So shift and have several seats madam lara
