Concussion!

Are you a movie buff?
Have you seen the movie CONCUSSION?If not, I suggest you do so.

In the movie, Super A-list actor, Will Smith plays a lead role, where he depicts the character of a notable Nigerian Doctor, Bennet Omalu, the first ever doctor to research and find out the link between banging heads in American football and a disease called Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, CTE and whose works have  saved lives in the NFL  in the United States and worldwide.

Hummmmm, wouldn't you expect that Nigerians would be happy with Will Smith for portraying our brother in good light for his great work? Instead, Naijas are beefing Will Smith for failing to capture the Nigerian accent to the T. Haba!!!

Why can't my people for once just focus on that which is positive and good?
If Dr. Bennet Omalu has been in America as long as over 10yrs, do we expect him to still possess the igbotic accent some of us are born with? Even on our own local radio station, I hear some presenters sounding more Americanised than Americans. Should we insist they speak with their strong Yoruba/Igbo/Hausa accent?

Without that movie, we wouldn't have really known who Dr. Bennet Omalu is. Isn't it enough that he discovered how to save the lives of a lot of football superstars? Even in our own country Nigeria, have we really shown that we value our players, celebrities, entertainers, and generally, all those that make us happy?
Please we should chill with all the silly, stupid and uninformed comments. OMG!

The fact, for Christ's sake is that Dr. Bennet Omalu  left Nigeria since 1993. How do we know if he even spoke with a heavy accent before he left our shores? Nobody knows if he had an igbo accent in the first place, so why do they expect Will Smith to speak like someone who hasn't crossed the Seme border?
Even me CharlyBoy, after 5yrs in America, most Americans that I came across would have sworn that I was born and buttered in America. Abegi.
Sometimes I can't believe my people's hypocrisy, just too obnoxious, makes me sick.

For a long time now, the foreign press and television stations have portrayed Africa and Nigerians in particular as jokers, fraudsters, common criminals and everything bad; now that we have a movie that's flipping a positive side, must we find something negative to say, all because of Will Smith's accent?
For all those people out there yarning akpata, please shut the fuckup, nobody wants to read or hear your useless comments on this matter.
If you can't applaud a job well done, just keep forever mute and stop all the unnecessary noise.
I don talk my own.

BY CHARLYBOY OPUTA

*I wonder how long it took Will to master that Almost-Nigerian accent..He really really tried and his American accent was pushed aside in his throat just to sound a little different.
This story gives me goose bumps..I cannot wait to watch it....I am so proud of you Dr Bennet Omalu.

    3. I want to use this opportunity to air my disappointment on the nasty comments Bolanle Olukanni made about will smith regarding this Movie. She recounted how embarrassed she felt watching will smith who could not speak in Nigerian/ Igbtic dialect". Coming from someone like Bolanle leaves a metallic taste in the tongue of my mind. All she had to say about this movie was about accent!! This is about the first time hollywood is ever making a movie to reflect Nigeria in good light, once in a while in their movies they mention Nigeria when they get to Drugs, fugitives, prostitutes, corruption and what have you!
Will smith put in his effort and time and money and everything to paint Nigeria in a good way, this would not be the first time he is doing so (sometime he did something about fela that really accorded him his place in the scheme of things).
He chose to celebrate one of us, he chose to make people that never knew anything good can be attributed to Nigeria. All Bolanle did was to Slam his efforts "fake Nigerian accent" when the likes of her Moment" crew in ebony live TV chose to speak confused American/British/Chad/Niger English. None of them speak without almost biting their tongues off all in the name of accent.
Media take out quickly grabbed her rant to rub it on Will Smith like "look at the monkeys you re doing a favour here blasting you". If will smith had chosen a 419 story, or something that has to do with the ABOBAKU and that kind of barbarism, trust me, the Oscars will be after him.
This is exactly what is wrong with Nigeria. People are against Buhari, the one president that will not steal our money. They blast him for prosecuting the people that put us in this bottomless pit. It is sad. The way the green passport is seen outside the country! I just wonder when all these will end. We have to be the change that we seek.

    4. Why make the whole message in this movie about "Accent"??? It is but a movie!
Why don't they ask will smith why he doesn't look exactly like Omalu???? He should go and do plastic surgery nauuuu!
Low lifes! Look at bolanle judging will smith when everything she represents is fake. I used to have a lot of respect for her.
The way Michelle dede will now be rolling her eyes like someone that has convulsion "all in the name of fake accent" at every lil opportunity she will remind you how her dad was an ambassador and how she is well travelled, ,full of shit . The kind of accent I hear in ebony live TV, I get confused. All they know is just open your mouth, twist your tongue, roll your eyes, stretch your neck and just be speaking.
Someone said Toke has British accent! I am like what!!! Abeg! They are all confused! Behaving like people with epilepsy.
Mo Abudu produces good movies, in terms of Nigerian setting. Bolanle is part of Ebony Live, can they dream of producing a movie like concussion in their afterlife???? Yet you have the guts to cast a stone on a ferrari from a Molue.

    9. I sincerely do not understand the fuss about Will's accent in this movie. I felt really bad for him, as many Nigerians started to condemn his effort as if they expect him to have a full Nigerian accent overnight. For crying out loud, it's a bloody movie. They left the message and concentrated on the main actor.

I can imagine how let down Smith would feel, having to read from shallow minded Nigerians seeking undue relevance. Shebi the Bolanle lady got her comment posted on an American site.. She's happy now right? Rubbish!!

Everyone turned movie critic overnight. If only the same energy is expended in criticising the nollywood artistes on how to better act and produce movies of their own culture o.. instead of bamboozing a foreigner for not representing a culture that is his well. Do our own actors not try to form American accent? Do they speak it well? Who has ever taken Jim Ike on when he tries to be American?? Abegy!!

    1. Exactly! This is the same mentality Oyibo people have about us"like our English should never get better even if we were born in the US or UK. That same mentality is what Bolanle is using to judge the movie. Will smith should have called cully(curry) or lice (rice). That is what she wants, which is also what Oyibo Oscar people wants to hear.

That was how one anon or a blog ID, not sure was just typing long grammar on that Boycotting the Oscars post, abt how Will Smith didn't deserve an Oscars 'nomination' coz he didn't portray the Nigerian accent very well in the movie 'Concussion'.
I just smh. I ws still at work and couldn't really type much.

What Nigerians do is cry foul everyday abt whats not being done or how they are being relegated into oblivion but when a move is made or a positive step is taken to bring them to limelight...they will castigate and condemn and fault that thing till they bring it down.

We fault our artistes who are celebrated like gods in other countries but in the same light, worship foreign artistes like the Kardashians even when they do something really bad.

A famous actor like Will Smith played a lead role in a movie that celebrates the brains that can be cultivated in Nigeria and we are picking at straws while neglecting the big picture which is that one of our own just made us so proud that his contribution to mankind just got immortalized via a movie.

Dr Omalu does not have igbotic accent. Why should his accent come up sef? Is that all what the movie is about?
Nigerians are so negative and it is not possible for someone to speak 100% like someone in a matter of the course of film production.
Why don't you argue that Will smith didn't do facial surgery to become Dr Omalus Twin. It is make belief not identity swap!

Does it mean that we must have Nigerian accent before we can answer Nigerians? It is called a movie, how can any sane person expect him to KILL the dialect like someone that has been trading at OMATA since birth.
Nigerians are always complaining. How many, even the Yoruba guy that acted Adebisi in Lust was supposed to be a Nigerian drug pusher he doesn't Even have Nigerian accent!!!! Bolanle that lives in Nigeria, does she have Nigerian accent? Why do they expect will smith to be 100% perfect?
If the movie was about slavery now, it will win an Oscar! Rubbish. Everyone left the message of the movie to chase shadows. Where were all the people complaining when they do rubbish depiction of Nigeria in other movies?

How many times has Bolanle told nollywood actresses that you don't wear high heels, make up and gele to go to bed. Next thing they get out of the pool without being wet. Next thing sickle cell will cause someone to start seeing vision and doctor will be listening to heartbeat on the thigh.
They have not even gone past those concert they call home video. What an insult to will smith.

  20. To be honest, I really don't take bolinto seriously anytime she opens her mouth to speak. Even when conducting interviews she asks questions that are supposed to be intelligent questions in such an unintelligent way and truly it jst kills the vibe! That been said, Dr omalu does not have an igbo accent. Infact he speaks like a well enlightened educated man whose origin you can not place. He only has some mannerisms like making gestures with his hands to drive home his points. Now that been said, the focus of the movie wasn't abt the accent or mannerisms of the good doc, rather it was to showcase his great work for humanity and this in my humble opinion, deserves not jst an Oscar but a noble right award if possible

  22. Come...area fada, take your old rickety self and shut the hell up. Whether Dr. Omalu has the "H-syndrome" or whatever accent, the point is that the Will Smith tried so hard to be Nigerian in the movie but Nigerians don't sound that way so you don't expect an educated audience like ours to swallow the act hook, line and sinker without questions. Funny how actors like Chiwetalu Ejiofor, RMD etc were not even considered. Says a lot about the producers of the movie that painted corporate America black and yet went ahead to choose an actor who would be accepted by same corporate America as opposed to an actor who would get the job done better.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Look at u. If only u understand that the beauty of art is in its diversity and the versatility of the characters/actors. They didn't have to use RMD for the movie just because he's Nigerian. The movie is making a hit because an American is acting Nigerian. That's the catch, if u must know.

The producer should be applauded for thinking outside the box.

      Delete
    2. Jehova! Someone is comparing RMD to Will Smith. I feel like giving you a concussion. ..*nd who told you Chiwetel has igbo accent? You guys should stop claiming Chiwetel Ejiofor,,, he has said numerous times that he is Briton but has relatives in AFRICA(after being pushed).

  25. Did he potray Nigerian accent or not?

You can't be acting like a French man and don't speak with the accent.

Nigerians are so sentimental. Africans are always thinking they deserve less than the best. When this British lady acted half of a yellow sun , she did her possible best to potray the accent.

When Wyclef and other foreign actors acted in Jeta Amata's film, they portrayed the Nigerian accent and mannerisms.

Will may have acted a good film but if he didn't potray the Nigerian accent, then he didn't. Sentiments aside.

Black Americans are fighting for their voices to be heard, Africans should do so too.

Why didn't they use a Nollywood actor?

Did you ask yourself why Nollywood ain't the one that made the movie? Why wait for Hollywood to celebrate our own? Must we always beg for fish instead of finding a way to fish ourselves?
Look at how you are claiming right like they came to drill our Oil from Niger delta.
Ohhh! Shut your brain! Month Abudu will rather portray prostitution and copy desperate housewives but won't think of a story line like this. Do we even celebrate our own? Except witches and wizards. Shebi ,GEJ said Adadevor doesn't deserve a national honour. Tomorrow, hollywood will make a movie about Ameyo Adadevor and you will start asking why they won't use Omotola or clarion.
Why didn't they use a nollywood actor? How much did Nollywood contribute in the making of the film? What did they do with the Billions GEJ gave them?
Why do they use Ramsey Nouah to act Americannah, is he from America? Is Jim Iyke black American?

Valid points. Tiny rant about accent he seemed to be potraying an east or south african accent. Just like the Obesenjo and other nigerians in the other awesome movie District nine. Is it that hard to potray a Naija accent. Maybe it is, we are that unique.

On another note, was it good enough to get an oscar, it was fresh and orginal,It was based on a true events as experienced by Dr Bennet Omalu. What the doctor discovered was new, dangerous and people were dying. Plus it took courage and perseverance and lots of his personal money (something Americans worship a lot, their earned pay)to pursue that goal. He was constantly knocked down because of how huge, almost religious like football is taken in USA and the fact that he was not American kept being shoved down his throat (psychological torture)I bet it was worse but toned down for movies, na d man intelligence they respected. Well Will Smith portrayed all this in his interpretation. He worked very hard at conveying several emotions and even creating and keeping to that accent(yeah not nigerian whateva!)and using Will was well played cus that is a bankable actor, A list and his name actually still get ppl to the cinema, and creates all that much needed media awareness so tey me wey no get time for myself was moved to read a bit on the matter, and was passionate enough to visit a blog to write a lengthy comment abi epistle sef cus prior to this I had no idea of the movie or medical condition...I think at least WILL SMITH, CONCUSSION DESERVES AN OSCAR, or at the very least a nomination in one of their numerous categories
    unless
the organisers of course are compromised, prejudiced or deeply unethical. Dont ignore the fact that the movie was about a man who was amongst many things, black not american BUT A CHRISTIAN, yes it was downplayed but it was obvious, personally i didnt mind, even found the fact that the Dr was, a man of faith as well as a man of science, fascinating, but I suspect the increasingly atheistic or anti christian groups within the award committee or whatchamatcallem may have issues with Christian Values that being promoted however subtle.

On a lighter note, so for the intelligent (very very) Dr Bennet Omalu mind, na Will Smith suppose play, himself. Me sef if I don accomplish what God has sent me to do na Gabrielle Union or Zoe Saldana go potray me ho ha!
