Ekiti State Leads In Open Defecation In Nigeria

Ekiti State is believed to have the highest of persons who openly defecate in Nigeria About 1.8 million residents  of the state out of a total population of 2.7 million  is believed to engage in the menace.

In her presentation, a Community-led Total Sanitation (CLTS) facilitator and a staff of Rural Water Sanitation Agency in the state, Mrs. Lanre  Ayeni, said 748 million of the global population,  lack access to hygienic water supply.
She added it was so regrettable that 1.8 billion people still use contaminated sources of water, which she said has caused a lot of damage to their health and body systems.

“When you take a water that has contaminated by shit (faeces), the person will have ten million viruses, one million bacteria and one hundred thousand parasite eggs in her body system.

CLTS  Coordinator Mr. Kayode Eleso, said many residents have been arrested and prosecuted for engaging in open defecation, particularly in Ado Ekiti metropolis,  while efforts, he said,  were also on to compel every household to have their toilets.

    3. I served in Ekiti state. Those pipo nor send o! Pesin wey dey sh!t for side of road go dey greet pesin wey Waka pass - eis ma, eis sir! One day me wit my padi just dey piss (guilty) for the corner of the gate leading into the LG HQ wey dey ontop hill where we been dey do primary assignment. We come sight one abandoned building downhill inside bush wey we never notice before. We just dey wonder between ourselves about the building when, all of a sudden, we heard a voice from within the bush. We think say na ghost o! E come be say na one guy wey just dey jejely do him business inside bush. He then proceeded to, as if it was the most natural thing in world, casually tell us about the history of the abandoned building and why it was abandoned - while still doing his business, squatted with his shokoto around his ankles.

  15. The fact that ppl lack vital knowledge in environmental issues is frightening. If you must do this you should dig a small hole and relieve yourself, then cover it with earth when you are done. Why would anyone defecate in a source of water? That is nasty on every level and quite selfish to the human and animal life who need that water.

  16. This educated people and their dirty no be here o. They are naturally dirty. Even if the govt. builds toilet for them, they cant maintain it. When I was in school, I used to fight with them about their unhygienic ways of using the toilet. They poo but won't flush. If they attempted to flush, it must be with dirty water.

  21. I reside in Ekiti state, and the situation is so bad, especially at new sites. Most of these houses are not having toilets, the strategy is to build quickly and in other to avoid paying house rents, then quickly pack to the houses before the toilets are completed. Most houses in Olorunsogo and Olorunda area in Ado Ekiti are culprits of this barbaric open defecation. Mr Kayode Eleso should stop staying in the office, its nigh time he takes the campaign to these areas so that they can be sensitized on the need to have toilets in their homes.
