Flight Delayed After Passenger Becomes Suspicious Of Equation

An Italian economist says his flight was delayed after a fellow passenger saw him working on a differential equation and alerted the cabin crew.
Guido Menzio was taken off and questioned by agents who did not identify themselves, after the woman next to him said she felt ill.

He showed them what he had been writing and the flight eventually took off - more than two hours late.
Mr Menzio told the Washington Post that the pilot seemed embarrassed.
He wrote on Facebook that the experience was "unbelievable" and made him laugh.

The University of Pennsylvania associate professor boarded the Philadelphia-Syracuse flight on Thursday on his way to Ontario, where he was due to give a lecture.

Before the flight took off, the woman sitting next to him passed a note to a member of the cabin crew.
She initially told them she was feeling unwell but then voiced her suspicions about Mr Menzio's scribblings.

He wrote: "It's a bit funny. It's a bit worrisome.
"The lady just looked at me, looked at my writing of mysterious formulae, and concluded I was up to no good.
"Because of that an entire flight was delayed."
He told Associated Press that the crew should have run additional checks before delaying take-off.

He said: "Not seeking additional information after reports of 'suspicious activity' is going to create a lot of problems, especially as xenophobic attitudes may be emerging."

American Airlines, whose regional partner Air Wisconsin was operating the flight in question, said the crew followed protocol to take care of an ill passenger and then to investigate her allegations. It was established that they were not credible.

The woman was re-booked on a later flight.

BBC reports.

  1. Lol... I love messing with white folks. On a flight from Atlanta to Maryland during takeoff, I closed my eyes murmuring jibberish & saying out "Allah Akbar" (mind you, my beard gang is on a class of its own). The look on the face of the white guy beside me was the funniest thing I had seen in a long time. When we landed, I broke out singing "Awesome God" to a considerable loud tune & the guy couldn't just wait to step off the plane, lol

  3. Eeyaa I don't blame the lady at all. I also had a terrifying experience once on an aero flight from port harcourt to Abuja. The guy sitting by me was full bearded like Osama and wearing a very long chesbi, I hope that's what the Muslim chaplet is called. He was muttering something to himself in low tune and seemed oblivious of his surroundings, he was actually seated before I joined. When I greeted he simple nodded ahhh that's another sign to me he's one of them, destroyers. I texted my husband and he said I should alert cabin crew but what will I tell them I saw? I was just praying and just before the plane took off he brought out his phone, called someone in Yoruba language, but before he ended the call he told the person in English that he will speak with him when he arrives, praise God that was all I needed to calm my nerves. I greeted him again this time he answered, even bowing a little to me apologizing for his manner earlier that he was praying I quickly said no problem but deep down hmmmmm. Thank God for safety.

  5. America has so many coded kolo people. I guess the guy has black hair with that Mediterranean outlook, that most xenophobic Americans will conclude he is of Arabic geneology. Hence a terrorist about to blow up that aircraft.
