Coup Scare: Nigerian Army Clamps Down On Suspected Officers

The Nigerian Army may have begun an internal search for soldiers and officers suspected to be engaging in political meetings, a top military source has told SUNDAY PUNCH.

The source said that some arrests may have been made, but that the information was being kept as top secret so as not to add to public tension.

Some other sources who spoke with Punch on Saturday also noted that the establishment of an army unit in Daura, Katsina State, on Friday, named Muhammadu Buhari Forward Operation Base, by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, was an effort to fortify the president’s hometown and a public pledge of loyalty.

On Tuesday, Buratai, in a tense language, had warned officers and soldiers to steer clear of politics, as information had reached him that some officers were involved in political meetings for “undisclosed reasons.”

  1. Heard the meeting took place in Babaginda's house, he uses his daughter's wedding as a cover up. The coup was for last week but the US send them warning or else there would be war

    3. In as much as I m against military, with the kind of mediocre and illiterates that we have in the government that were all to make money for themselves, I think the military should wiped all of them off with the exclusion of no one. The country is stagnant and broke due to their selfishness and in order for the country to move further, the military need to come back and put order back to the country. These politicians have nothing to offer except to steal money

  5. This so called democracy is not working in Nigeria. Our politicians cannot better the lives of the masses. Educational institutions, Health care facilities, power, security, nothing to write home about. If, the khaki boys want to take over, they should go ahead. That might be better than what we have now. These Politicians have failed us big time.
