The examination board stated that contrary to speculations that it fixed the tertiary institutions minimum admission cut-off marks, the decision as a consensus between all stakeholders in the education sector.
While explaining the new cut off marks announced on Tuesday, JAMB, through its Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, insisted that stakeholders in the education sector deemed the cut-off marks fit for entry into universities for the 2017 academic year.
The cut-off mark pegged at 120 however comes lower than the consensus of the previous year which was pegged at 180.
While allaying the fear of Nigerians that the recent move might further deteriorate the standard of education in the country, the examination board’s registrar further stated that besides the recommended cut off marks, individual institutions are free to raise their minimum entry marks but not higher than 180 and lower than 120 for universities.
He said: “With this decision, universities are not to go below the minimum 120 cut-off points adopted by the meeting for admissions.” Oloyede further stressed the need for flexible cut-off marks for admission process into higher institutions in the country.
He added: “What JAMB did was a recommendation,we only determined the minimum, whatever the various institutions determine as their admission cut-off mark is their decisions. The Senate and academic boards of universities should be allowed to determine their cut-off marks.”

Then I totally agree with them because most people are just lucky with jamb scores through various tricks and most students dont get high scores to meet most universities cut off due to read9ns like not answering all questions before the time of the exam is finished etc a better opportunity to redeem themselves at the institutions of thier choice.... So this is just my 2 cents....lemme b going

ReplyDeleteWell it's fine shaa. At least more people will have a chance to redeem themselves through post utme. Only that this is just official. It won't be practiced. A friend scored 283 last year going for medicine in uniben. He wasn't admitted that last year even though the cut off marks for fed uni was 180 as of that last year by jamb. Uniben still set their medicine and other depts from 200, 205,220 etc and it was hectic with the whole screening without post utme. People that has two sitting 0 level results were at disadvantage too.

Isn't it obvious the reason behind the reduction? In most northern states, remedial program is the medium through which admission is gotten into universities.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone bothered to ask why someone from Zamfara state will score less than 10 marks and be admitted into any of the Unity schools owned by the Federal Government, while someone from any of the South East states would have to score over 120 marks before s/he can be admitted.
It's just a ploy for Nigerians not to see the ethnic bias behind the decision and no one should come here and say that the head of JAMB is a Yoruba man so my conclusion has no basis. Just ask yourself, while Osinbajo was the Acting President, how many presidential orders was he allowed to make?
Some persons just have this sense of entitlement of the entity called Nigeria. The big poser is, but for how long will this believe that they own Nigeria continue?
Sir/Ma, before you make such allegations, have you realised that everything in this country is based on federal character, and quota system, and most of the time the northerners dont even fill their quota it is mostly filled by people from other parts of the country, why? because they are not even interested. Like the unity schools you are saying people from Zamfara hardly even go to school, so the few of them that show up with low marks are given admission so that the quota for zamfara state will be filled and even at that they dont fill it up, that is why sometimes you see an igbo or a yoruba with documents reading a state from the north so that that space that will not be filled by the northerners wont go to waste, meanwhile ppl from the south east and southwest fill up theirs because a vry large number of them go to school. It is so even with NDA. Do your findings and if i am wrong you are free to come and rebut wat i have said with a more superior argument. Thanks
Delete@Teetee I agree with you 100%. Some people that don't understand federal quota about university entry will just open their mouths and be speaking out of ignorance. Please before you comment on a post that concerns the federation, make sure you make your research well to avoid trouble or hatred.
