Redeemed Church Bans Aso Ebi And Ungodly Wedding Engagements

Compulsory uniform outfit, popularly known as Aso ebi, has been outlawed in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

Petty lies, usually told at wedding engagement ceremony, have also been declared ungodly and banned forthwith.

Wife of the General Overseer of the church and Mother-in-Isreal, Pastor Folu Adeboye made these known on Saturday at the women’s meeting, which was a part of the activities of the 65th annual convention of the church themed “Halleluyah”.

She stated at the meeting that compelling members of the church to participate in Aso ebi during special programmes in local assemblies was ungodly.

The news that some members of the church without financial power to buy such uniforms, were excluded from the programmes for which the uniforms were sown, was seriously repudiated by the church leadership.

She noted that Aso ebi which should ordinarily be for the family, must not be elevated to the point of making it to overshadow the spiritual life of the congregants.

She warned that such un-Christianly act of keeping church members out of programmes because of Aso ebi, must never be heard again among the women in the church, adding that those caught would be severely sanctioned.

Like ushers week, women conference etc. stellar belike am a journalist with constant reminder and yet you failed to report this correctly. This one here is right some ppl are under pressure in church with the constant uniform and I all.

    6. I agree with her Stella. Aso ebi shouldn't made compulsory abeg. Sometimes they enforce gele, shoe colour etc. And when one cant afford them, you'll treated like an outcast..

  4. The only part i dont understand is what she means by petty lies during wedding engagements.
But I understand the aso ebi not being allowed at "church events". If it's for church events then that's her jurisdiction. So far it doesn't pass church events.
Some of these women's group or factions take these aso ebi for church events. And all the women may not be able to afford and feel segregated.

Years before or may be some still practice this about 2 other siblings of the wife will be brought out first in some part of Yoruba land before the bride and grooms family are made to pay to see the real wife, oju logo gan gan. It's all fun.

  6. Good morning Stella

    This your opinion

"Nigerian Churches interfere too much in the private lives of their congregants abeg!" tho.

That is not interference and even if it is, then a good and constructive one. You need to see how many people aren't going to church today because of levy imposed on the members, these are people who are feeding from hand to mouth. It is so sad. So correcting a trend that seemingly deter people worshiping or coming together to achieve a goal because they lack the means to wear designated wear is welcome and should be appreciated.

    #Two wrongs can't make a right✌️

The church is now against congregations fixing aso ebi for their members because it has come to their notice that those who can't afford the collabo is usually excluded from the programmes the aso ebi clothes are intended for. It is a place of worship where both the rich and poor come together to serve God, so why should some poor people be exempted cos of their inability to buy the church aso ebi?
Another is telling petty lies during engagement just to make extra cash of people. She said it is ungodly.

  8. Good move. Quite a number of Church groups are simply fashion-conscious groups. They pay more attention to material things than the primary thing church should represent and in doing that, make those who can not possibly keep up the pace feel less of themselves.

  10. There's nothing wrong in what I read above. She didn't say don't wear asoebi for your parties, she's saying in the church for church programmes let's read n grasp things before jumping to conclusion. I've seen the headline everywhere and everyone seems to be thinking in a direction. *sigh*

  12. How did you come about your conclusion? Because from what I read above, there was no interference in people's life. She's very right . She didn't say don't wear aseobi for your parties and weddings . Don't just do it for church programs. Because you put others who can't afford it in a position where they miss church or feel left out.

  21. Redeemed church bands asoebi?
    What a heading!

Nice one there, this has always been an issue especially in women groups in church.
The Haves intimidate the Have nots into purchasing these pricey materials for church functions or they are not allowed to participate. I think this is why The Catholic church has just one Uniform for all their women group functions, makes sense.

Further more, the lady is saying that if families have to include church members for the dedications, weddings etc.... The use of a Uniform material should be a family matter not imposed on invited members. Shikena!
Then the petty lies told during engagements,I don't really have sound knowledge of how it works with Yoruba weddings but I know some Umu adas tell small lies to grooms to get them to bring out more cash before the bride will be released to him to take home.
Its usually fun to them, but in God's eyes they are still lies. I guess that is what she is referring to.

    2. Yes oh! @umuada even in my place they say the car bringing her has spoilt bring 20k, the brides shoe cut she needs new shoe, she is thristy she needs to get a crate of mineral for she and her friends so they can continue the journey. Na so the groom's family go dey commot money till bride show. That thing freaking annoys me. Just tell the groom: mothers gift, age group settlement, extended family needs crates of malt. Shikena. Na wa oh!

  22. Same reason one of the orthodox Churches made it compulsory for women to wear same material for their women's uniform. It doesn't matter how rich you are, same material the woman selling pepper in the market wears is same the wife of a billionaire wears.

  25. Stella, am in support of what she said, that is ungodly to impose aso-ebi on members who can't afford it...and then not participate in the church activities because of the leveed of Aso-ebi.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Comprehension skills is really lacking in a lot of people. What she said has nothing to do with your private events but with church related activities. It really is the right move in my opinion because the church should not be a place of intimidation and oppression but of love and unity. Stella you can so fall hand with your comments sometimes.

  27. #You lose yourself in the things you love. You find yourself there too*

  28. Please let's read with understanding and comment with sense. The Aso-ebi banned is for church programs and in the story you will see that the woman does not understand why Aso-ebi that is taken by families for occasions has been brought to church. She's not saying do not do Aso ebi for weddings and occasions she's just saying no aso-ebi should be done in the name of the Church for church events and forced down people's throats while the ones that can't afford it are excluded.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Stella, how is this "interfering in private lives of their congregants"?

You need to see how some departments force members that are not working to buy thanksgiving asoebi?

Some people starve theirselves just to buy church asoebi.

Mummy GO thank you so much oh. I know someone that heard this and was so happy.

  30. Is a good one, some women just want to show off with the aso ebi, I hope that can make women think better and straight.

  31. I'm sorry to say but this message should get to various choirs too.

Una uniform too much. So if I want to join choir department, I must have all the clothes else I won't sing? Wonderful.

Let me 'jeje' be doing my choir in my heart. God hears it.

    1. I wanted to do read and pass cos I'm coming so late but I had to stop by this your comment. Three different people I know stopped going to church because of this choir uniform ish. One choir has more than 15 outfits and these are students fending for themselves. I don't worship in the same church but it took plenty begging and talking sense to them(salvation and worshipping with brethren featured top on the list) for them to start going to church again. I wish and hope this trend would be addressed. There are three choirs in my church and their uniform is what ALL the choirs of the church in Nigeria use.

  32. I don't think it's right for some of to come here and insult Stella. I guess she made her conclusion because of the "petty lies at engagements" that followed just after the aso-ebi talk. 35. I totally support the banning of Aso Ebi for church event. You will find that most of these women are not even spiritual if you move closer to them they are in need of friends and socials is the motive for being in church.

Plus the less privileged either feel intimidated or overstretch themselves to meet up. Its really sad. I am a member of a particular church attended by rich people and I have always wondered at how the women group always finds a reason to post one aso ebi after another each week.

I am happy the church has taken a position on this.
