  5. I think people now misuse the word 'depressed'.

Depression is different from being sad or lonely.

Most people r lonely think that they r depressed.

    2. Jasmine thank you oh. What is all these nonsense about depression? Do they even know the meaning of depression? If he had said he was sad I would understand.

Do you know most depressed people are suicidal, lose interest in life and just want to end it all.

I worked with someone who had not taken her bath nor brushed her teeth for a year!! She was living in filth, her kids had to be taken from her and she is undergoing therapy.

In Nigeria, you hear things like I applied for a job and my application was refused, I am depressed.

I am broke, I am depressed.

I failed my exam, I am depressed.

My car broke down, I am depressed.

My boyfriend broke up with me, I am depressed.

There is a huge difference between being temporarily unhappy and depression .

Stop abusing the word which is typical of Nigerians.Depression is a serious illness, it is no joke.

    5. @chidy I think its good that 13:46 puts the ideal word to use in perspective. Many people throw depression carelessly. If you have seen what depression can do to a person you won't wish it on yourself or anyone else.
We all have bad days But depression is when you generally think you have a bad life and nothing good around you pleases you anymore.

  11. Why is depression trending? If you're unhappy, depressed. You lost your money, depressed. Your plans fell through, depressed. Here's what I got online about self diagnoses for depression.

"Five or more of the following symptoms have been present during the same two week period and represents a change from previous functioning, at least one of the symptom is either a. depressed mood or b. loss of interest or pleasure
    1. Depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day as indicated by subjective report or observed by others.
    2. Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the day, nearly every day.
    3. Significant weight loss while not dieting or weight gain, or decrease or increase in appetite nearly every day.
    4. Insomnia or hypersomnia nearly every day.
    5. Psychomotor agitation or retardation nearly every day.
    6. Fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day.
    7. Feeling of worthlessness or excessive and inappropriate guilt nearly every day.
    8. Diminished ability to think or concentrate nearly every day.
    9. Recurrent thought of death, recurrent suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, or a specific plan to commit suicide"

Let's stop using the word lightly cos survivors can tell you it took a long while for them to identify they were actually depressed.

    2. Leave them now, they think depression is child's play.

    3. When you're unhappy and demoralized, or don't see hope in the future, and thoughts of self injury or suicide begins to enter your mind, and all these feelings last for several weeks, that is depression. Just that it could be classified into mild, moderate or severe depression, in which case you'll have to see a specialist.
In most cases what victims need is a little more understanding, love, care and reassurance from family and friends and possibly counseling.

Now that he has reached out (that's if doesn't do a 360 tomorrow), I hope his family and friends can get/give him the help he needs.

  16. Depression is living in a body that fights to survive with a mind that tries to die. There is a thin line between depression and feeling suicidal. Sadness alone isn't depression, thou it is a part of it. Pls let's tryna reach out and be there for anyone with signs of depression. They really need us. All humans will feel depressed at one point or the other BTW.

  19. Reekado, see a shrink after which you can google what real depression means.

You are probably sad that you were not featured in a song, now you want to form depression

Few months ago you were jolly and announcing how God has blessed you + the houses and school you are building, fast forward few months after, you are depressed??

My Dear, it doesn't happen that fast. Its a gradual process to fall into depression.

  20. Nigerians please don't take important information like this for a joke. I've been a mental health nurse for 12 years, and a clinical social worker for 15 years. All my life, I've worked with such.
You should be aware from being sad constantly, it can progress to suicidal or depression.
I lost a wee friend in Nigeria in 2014 because people called her fat and ugly she killed herself.
Hopefully next year I plan to come to Nigeria to establish an NGO for mental health awareness

    1. I wonder what kind of health nurse you are. Which human being on earth doesn't have bad days? By that I mean days you are not too happy or your spirit is low. Does it mean depression?? Abegiii.

    2. Hopefully next year I plan to come to Nigeria to establish an NGO for mental health awareness- this is really important,it's really nice to see someone thinking towards this.

    3. As a mental health nurse, do depressed people say they're depressed? In your experience, that is? See ehn, I was depressed for about six months some years back cos my life wasn't going as planned. My mum is a public health worker with plenty years experience. It took a while for her to identify I had a problem. It took another while for me to be made to see I had a problem. So, I ask again, do depressed people say they're depressed?

  21. There is difference between being sad and depression, according to a program I listen to sometimes ago by one doctor, depression is a form of mental illness, you can't be unhappy for just a day or two and call it depression.please let us stop using the word.
