Good Prices (Amongst Others) Make Online Shopping The Preferred Destination In Nigeria.

Nigerians love to shop, no doubt! With the current rate of foreign exchange, they are constantly looking for the best channels and the most cost-effective means to procure goods and services.

Online stores have positioned themselves to meet this changing needs of shoppers. Some have up to one million products listed on their websites! These products range from electronics, mobile phones, groceries, baby, furniture and beauty products. Value-added services like free returns, payment on delivery, product warranty, and occasional free shipping are also offered to customers. This has ensured ease of shopping and a wider reach.

Before a final decision to make a purchase, the average Nigerian shopper takes out time to look around various locations and websites in search of the best prices. For example, they start with pricecheck.com.ng and even visit some brick and mortar stores. Who doesn’t love a good deal?

An investigation into the prices of some most sought-after products revealed that some online stores have a niche market where they are king. When it comes to price, local ecommerce pioneers like Jumia Nigeria are beating out the competition even when pitted against international e-retailers like Amazon and Aliexpress. For instance, the Galaxy S8 Plus on Amazon.com shows a price of $725.98 which when converted to local currency is about N265,708.68. On Jumia, it currently sells for N232,500.

Even a quick price comparison of popular outdoor markets and physical shops shows that Jumia Nigeria is keeping good on its word of giving shoppers the best prices. The e-commerce giants remained competitive and in several cases cheaper than several well-known retail shops, outlets and open air markets such as the Saka Tinubu phone village in Victoria Island, Lagos.

For instance on Jumia, there is a Samsung 1HP air conditioner retails for N73,500 while the same is sold on Konga for N89,900. The Samsung 8 plus is being sold for N280,000 on Konga and N232,500 on Jumia.

While commenting, Mrs. Temitayo Soyeni a civil servant stated that she does not miss special shopping events on Konga and Jumia, especially the Jumia Family Market every month. “It’s a perfect avenue to restock on household essentials.”

A management executive Mr. Chibuzo Opara happily said that, “I bought some 32 inch LED TVs and a home theatre online two years ago and it's still in good working conditions. I am addicted to buying all my electronics online because their quality and prices are usually very good. I am seriously looking forward to the upcoming for Black Friday.”

The everyday Nigerian will always compare prices before a purchase. It is important that E-commerce operators keep their prices competitive if they must win the never-ending war on affordability.

  1. So the writer just stylishly advertises jumia as against konga or any other E-commerce online store that services Nigeria.

  3. Generally, things are cheaper on Konga than on jumia. I say so because I have both apps on my phone and always compare prices before choosing where to buy from and konga always meets expectations.
That notwithstanding, it's also better to cross check with dealers especially when it comes to electronics. I remember in January when shopping for new tvs and saw one on konga (cheaper than jumia again and the exact thing ) but when I ordered for it I was asked to make at least 50%deposit because of the price tag but since I was still smarting from the pay before delivery nonsense where I was given a wrong size of shoes and didn't get an exchange I refused. I jejely got the dealer name from the site, goggled them, spoke with them and next day went and purchased the tv at a MUCH cheaper rate I shock πŸ˜€.
So my new style since then is...cross check across board before I hand over my money for any item.

  4. I prefer Jumia, when it comes to online shopping , because of delivery fee, returns and refund made easy.
