Emergency Room Series: Superstitious Beliefs

Sometimes people will just get you angry and you'll begin to wonder if they're normal at all

I don't even think education affects the way some people reason at all. If one person does something and it works, that doesn't mean it will work for you. It's like taking antihypertensives when you don't have hypertension, it would work for someone who has hypertension but could kill you.

Why are some people so superstitious, even at the point of death! At this age and time?

A couple made a deadly mistake that will haunt them forever and it is definitely not out of ignorance or lack of education of the parents.

All hell broke loose when they brought this child to the ER. The child was already gasping, incontinent, unconscious, pale and very dehydrated. The skin was wrinkled and very dry. We couldn't get an IV access in time because all the veins had collapsed, it wasn't even up to 5mins they got to the ER that the child went into cardiac arrest.

That was how we started CPR. At the back of our minds, we knew it would take a miracle for the child to survive it judging by the presentation , but still we hoped the child would make it. While the CPR was being done, another doctor asked the parents what happened and why they would bring the child when the condition was already critical.

The parents claimed the child had been stooling, vomiting and running fever for about four days. They said they thought the child was teething and it was 'normal teething process' and that was why they didn't bring the child to the hospital in time. When asked if they at least gave syrups to calm the temperature, they said no because they 'thought it would go'. I was just shaking my head because I couldn't imagine what I was hearing. We noticed the child was drooling some yellowish fluid so the parents were asked what it was, only to receive a shocker that it was the child's urine that they poured into the child's mouth on instructions of the father's mother.

She was said to have been the one who brought the whole teething idea and advised them to give the child urine if there was a fever. The child's mother said her husband's mother claimed it was the same thing she did when the father of the child was a baby and it 'made the teeth grow out so well'. We were all dazed! Even a mentally ill person cannot give a child urine to drink!

Anyways, the CPR continued for about 20 more minutes but we got no heartbeat. The heart was already failing and weak to restart . The deed had been done. The parents begged for a miracle but sadly the child was gone. I felt so much anger inside, I wanted to yell and just rip the parents apart but I just stood there, watching how the mother began to hit the husband's chest (who had been surprisingly calm all along) , wailing and blaming his mother.

These are two educated people who just lost their child because of some kind of ideology or belief or 'respect for the elderly '. The father's mother wasn't at the hospital but I could tell the child's mother had been through a lot with the woman because she accused the husband of so many family issues his mother had caused. We allowed the mother of the child to express her grieve. At a point, she held her breasts and began to curse the woman. She said she had wanted to bring the child to the hospital when the stooling started but the mother in-law said no. I don't know why a mother-in-law will have so much power.

Such a devil incarnate!

For those who don't know, the common symptoms of teething are drooling, swollen and bulging gums, irritability, trouble sleeping, trying to bite, chew and suck on everything and rejecting food. Vomiting, stooling and persistent high fever are NOT signs of teething

*Jesus Christ!!!!

It was till I moved to Lagos that I found out a lot of things are called teething. Women, Learn to stand your ground against your mils especially when it concerns your child. I had a case of a day old baby WTH breasts, mum was asked not to touch it, only for them to come for check up with bigger, red and tender /painful ones. The mom reported the mil of using hot water on them. We counselled the mil, next thing we heard was she packed her stuff and left. Don't let your kids suffer because of peace to reign. That's crap

  3. You mean they gave a child urine to drink?...
    Wonderment!..,
Parents should give their babies rotavirus vaccine to avoid unecessary Stooling and vomiting!...
    It's not even expensive!...
You see some mothers buying cloths, weaves of 150k but won't cough out small money to give their children the necessary things they need!...
I gave the vaccine to all my children!!...i think it cost less than 10k then...
    I don't know about now!...
Rubbish Naija government should make these things free for a common man!..

  4. She obviously didn't want to offend her mother in law, in those cases, just say Yes Ma, then make an excuse to go out with the child and go to hospital, when you return, she can say whatever she likes, just keep quiet.

    1. I have offended my mother in law so much that i know she hates me. Once my doctor/midwife say do this, she will oppose it and start saying this is how we did it during ourr time. Me ke, pikin wey i born in my late 30s, I am ready to offend the whole world self. The day she was shaking my baby too much in the name of playing i told her straight up cuz I couldn't take it.

Stand your ground, let her hate you if she wants to,I just cant!! You are the mother of the child.

    2. Me I won't even say 'yes ma'. It's my child. I have the final say, not any mother in law from somewhere, not even my mum. If the mother in law is angry that I took my child to a hospital for medical evaluation, that's her business. She can like to vex till Jesus comes, I no go look her face

  7. The level of misinformation about health issues among Nigerians is alarming, both educated and uneducated alike. Public health specialists have a huge task on their hands in the area of health education.

  8. God of heaven! See me crying like a baby. 2 educated persons allowed one mil to ruined their life with her oriburuku? Oh God i so feel for the baby. i can only imagine how helpless he/she was at the time. I can imagine he/she looking at the mother and wishing she could help/ saved him/her. I can imagine he/she in serious pains.. God why?

I remember when i had my baby, i was like a Lion and all ready for anybody to come and dictate for me on how to take care of my daughter. And of course i told my husband to let me have it MY OWN way and he accepted and told me hes with me on whatever i want.

When we brought my baby home after few weeks or so in the hospital and i noticed her eye balls were turning yellowish (sign of Judice ) i screamed and called people's attention and imagine what *** told me, "Bring her and stop insinuating " she checked and told me that her eyes were normal. Omo come see me , i dont turn mad i respectfully told her to give me back my baby she refused and i called my husband in and told him " go and get me my baby NOW"!!! he jejely walked towards her and took my baby lol. i just grabbed my key wanted to drive her to the hospital myself with my transparent nighty, my husband rushed to me and collected the key and drove me there himself and was later advised to used unripe paw therapy.

What if, what if what if..................... i wouldnt be called mummy **** today.

First time mothers, please open your eyes....

  10. I remember during my time,I stood my ground against all my inlaws. Took a lot of abuse but I no send them, anytime my mil wants to try anything,I will tell her No and collect my baby from her. Anything beyond me,I will take him to the clinic..Thank God for my Mum,anytime arguments start between myself and my mil,my husband will just pick his car keys and disappear. It took a while but my mil came around and before She does anything she'd ask me 1st and stick to my decision. We are best of friends today and she's always the one to tell people now things like* haa, noo I don't want his mum to rake for me,let me ask her 1st*. The is changing, you have to keep up

This is so sad.MIL have been doing wonders from time immemorial, when I had my first son there was nothing I dint hear. After circumcision I told her the nurses told us to use penicillin on the penis but this woman was using hot water to massage it till the day I noticed my son's penis wasn't healing well I changed it for her.she will back a two weeks old with the legs far apart whenever I complained she will say my baby is a strong baby because he was big....so many ridiculous things.....because I protected my son I lost my marriage but I think I can live with that than loosing a child.......may his gentle soul rest in peace!

  14. My God! So after all this my hsg, painful procedures ttc. Then mil will now come and say what. Tcheeew! That one I go fight with all my life. God forbid

  15. That woman is foolish and is the cause of all this. How do some people even throw away sense in the name of respecting mother in-law.
I don't blame them some people take their MIL as demi-god because they feel they won a prize by getting married.
Some start this nonsense from when they are just even dating.
I don't know how to be fake, I give my mother in-law respect that I give my mother. I stand my ground also, just as I do with my mother.
They came into my father's house to ask for my hand in marriage, nobi me come beg them.
I give my MIL due respect, but when it is time to ignore her I do that.
You can imagine my MIL saying why am I always taking my kids to hospital, that every time my kids are sick. I answered 'mama they are not sick IJN'. Like its her money I'm using to go.

    1. I will never support it when a new born is involved and you are a first time mom. Nobody can know your child reach you. I use to check my baby all the time and everywhere even till now I always ask him,is anywhere paining you?.. He knows he has to let me know if anywhere is paining him.so@ TheReal,I don't deceive myself and so I don't deceive others

  18. That woman should blame herself and not her mother in law. She claims she is educated and should therefore no better than an old woman in the village when it comes to stuff like this. This is HER CHILD for goodness sake. No human being on earth can dictate things like that to me o, no even the child's father. Now see what she caused...poor child. The woman is going to blame herself for a very long time.
I worked in a paediatric hospital the whole of last year and i see wehn! You hear some things the so called 'educated' people do and give to their children and you're left with mouth open, like are they for real???
J wish she didn't learn her lesson this hard way ooo. May the child rest in peace.

  22. Mothers no one knows your baby more than you. When I read this part" I just stood there, watching how the mother began to hit the husband's chest (who had been surprisingly calm all along) , wailing and blaming his mother" I wish I could meet the useless husband that can't defend his wife and child from his controlling mother.RIP to the child and I hope the Mom learns to put the wellbeing of her child over every thing else.

  23. The MIL did it on purpose, she just wanted the child dead, and she wanted the death to be from the mother. . Watch what happens after this.

    1. Exactly so! The marriage may not even be able to survive this tragedy. Perhaps this is what the Mil wanted all along.

No matter how new you are to parenting instinct must tell you pouring urine down a baby's throat can't be right. Then they will come proudly tell you they are graduates, nah them money waste on..Mtschhw.

  24. 😢😢😢😢 poor baby RIP darling.
I feel like punching both mother and father!
They probably got the baby on a platter of gold that is why they had the audacity to pour urine into the mouth 😭😭😭. If they went through hell to have that child will any demonic mother in law propose any rubbish and they will do?

  25. Hhmmm. This is very sad. Like someone said above public health specialists have a lot of work to do. When i was pregnant for the first time, I got alot of unsolicited advice. You know how it is nau being a first time mom. I had this lady that lives close to us that I used to chat with once in a while. We were talking about infant feeding one day and she said all those things they say about exclusive breast feeding in the hospital is not true. According to her, it is impossible to give breast milk without water. Infact she said if I do it, it means i want to kill the child. Abi was it when i had little back pain during my pregnancy. She said it was Jedi Jedi and she was prescribing Agbo for me. I laughed so much. With all the school wey i go... I should take Agbo while i'm pregnant. When my ancestors were not mad. Or was it when she said I should find out from my husband's family if they use cold water to bathe the baby for the first time. That if i use hot water instead of cold water, the baby wont survive. When i diagree with her, whe will say I dont know anything about nature. Abi was it unripe paw paw water for malaria prevemtion. These are just a few. What did i not hear. This lady is just in her late 20s or early 30s. And she's educated. I tried to teach her somethings but it was hard mehn..I just kept my distance abeg.
My mum in law is very cool oo. She understands that times have changed. If you explain somethings to her, she will just take it.
I no send oo. I dont take any of all these yeye advice. 9 months is no joke.
