Chimamanda Adichie Wins PEN Pinter Prize 2018

Nigerian born Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, author of 'We Should All Be Feminists' has been the awarded PEN Pinter Prize 2018.....

The prize is given to writers, in memory of playwright Harold Pinter, who take an “unflinching, unswerving” look at the world.

The Purple Hibiscus author said: “I admired Harold Pinter’s talent, his courage, his lucid dedication to telling his truth and I am honoured to be given an award in his name.”

The judges praised Adichie’s “refusal to be deterred or detained by the categories of others”. Her writing was sophisticated beyond measure in her understanding of gender, race and global inequality”.

She will receive the award at a ceremony at the British Library in October, where she will deliver an address.

Adichie, previously winner of the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and the Orange Prize, whose TED talks attract a huge audience, recently sparked a debate by questioning whether “chivalry” was s#xist.

Previous winners of the PEN Pinter Prize include Margaret Atwood (2016), Salman Rushdie (2014) and Tom Stoppard (2013).

  3. Congrats! Whenever I see her giving speeches I feel so proud being a woman. She is part of the females changing the face with which women are being looked at. People especially men misunderstand her but if only those people can get to her level of thinking and stop being superficial they will see reason with her. Her husband is so lucky to have her as his wife. I wish I knew her, I so much admire her, sometimes I wish I was her.

I have so much to give but I feel being in this country is making me be a mediocre. I am on my way relocating to a foreign country and though I am 34 years, I know my name will be heard soon for positive things ( I know Nigeria will appreciate me by then, just like they appreciate the Nigerian brains abroad) but first I have to move out of this sh.. hole.

Congrats again. You are an inspiration to all.

  10. The people I pity are the women who follow men to mock this genius. Those men are showing you how much they can not stand a woman with a voice but you and your low self esteem will follow and mock. Disagree with her yes but to mock her and misconstrue her words, that is quite low. These women are clearing the way so your daughters (because no sane hardworking woman will join these small boys to mock can aspire not just as women but as Africans in realms were we were never recognized). Chimamanda questions things but does not put them down, the same way a man would but because of our men's low self esteem they see it as her condemning things.

If you attend any events with her, she recognizes her place as a woman and the place of a man and she is more about people being treated fairly all around. This is a problem for a lot of men as when fairness is introduced then it threatens their false place of superiority.
