African History...

This is an epic quote!!!

"When the missionaries came to Africa, they had the Bible and we had the land. They said “let us close our eyes and pray.” When we opened them, we had the Bible, and they had the land." - Desmond Tutu

    1. I believe the former leader of Kenya and the founder Jumo kenyatta was the originator of this saying or at least it can be attributed to him. Read more African literature.

    2. Exactly. A well known saying. And as Bishop Tutu is of the cloth, this would be incongruous.

    3. More incongrous than him attending & supporting his daughter's lesbian 'wedding'?

  2. So true Stella. I wish I can type now the effect of the early Christian missionaries to the Nigerian culture and heritage but so tire. Maybe some other day.

    2. @00:39, you're going too far!

If Jesus was presented to you as a black man from Ghana or Mali, would you have accepted him as your lord and personal saviour?

....which is of course one of Nigeria's biggest problems.

  6. When the Europeans came to invade and exploit our land, this was their reason "we came to serve God and her majesty, to give light to those who are in darkness, and also to acquire that wealth which most men covet.

From the above, you will find 3 reasons why they came

    1. Religion- "to serve God and give light to those in darkness" the CMS mission

    2. Political- "to serve her majesty" feudalism was a show of political strenght back then so they came to acquire lands for the queen in other to strengthen the English empire.

    3. Economic- "to acquire that wealth every man covers" they came to siphon Africa of it's wealth and many resources to strengthen the English economy abroad.

Truth is they never lied to us as to why they actually came to exploit and enslave Africa, we just didn't read between the lines.

  7. Christianity was introduced in Africa as a means of subduing the people...the Europeans kept ripping Africa off, economically and otherwise, the missionaries will preach to the people to leave vengeance for God.

Hahahaha...what an irony of life. Some would say they brought education, but what did teach? Simple English language and basic arithmetic so people can use the knowledge and serve then. The never aught the main sciences and I think this is why Africa is still lagging behind in scientific innovation.

    1. Oh no, we are not behind in scientific innovation. We just have our focus on something else. Hence no good support for those in the innovation ship.

  8. So true our dear ArchBishop Emeritus, Desmond Tutu.

He posed staunch opposition to the apartheid policies and spent his active life educating Anglicans on how to retain their origin and traditions whole being Christian.

Love his teachings, the white man sold their religion for a swap. Get to Cathedrals in England and few members attend communion service seated at opposite ends.

    This life. This religion.
    Hmmmmmmmmm.

  10. Even before they came with their own God to impose Him on us and teach us how to worship him, we were already worshipping him in our own way and we called him Chukwu abiama for the Igbo and Olodumare for Yoruba.
Even though we had othe gods, we have always believed in the supremacy of a supernatural being. If you like you may call him God Almighty.
This is one of the many ways Europeans under developed Africa. They took away our indigenous ways of worship.
