ReplyDeleteOf course certain kinds of name can limit your being accepted for certain job placements. This Korean guy whose name was 'Phuck' kept getting turned down until someone advised him to consider changing his name to something less suggestive. He had to go with 'Paul' and got the very next job he applied for. That girl up there has a name that sounds like what I used to hear on The Jerry Springer show...... Nothing wrong with shortening it to 'Hermie'if the job is worth it.

DeleteModella the same way "that kinda name is strange" to you is the same way your native name is strange to them. If faced with the same employer you'll probably receive the same email she received.
DeleteSome employers here are racist to the core I tell ya, immediately they see a name that is domestic, or suggestive black name they'll toss that resume. They didn't do it because of the name, they did it because she is black. White people bear names like bush, river, forest, demon and a lot more troubling names but no one is rejecting their resumes for it.

ReplyDeleteMy former boss was always fond of calling me different English names, I corrected him a lot of times, even my other colleagues also corrected him but he refused to oblige.
One morning, I came to work and greeted him addressing him by a strange name and he just stood there, staring at me while I walk away.
He never tried addressing me by another name again.
As easy and popular as my name is, I don't expect anyone to forget it.
No one has the right to question another person's name.... As difficult as these Europeans names sounds, I still try my best to pronounce it right. But, they are so lazy to learn to pronounce other natives names.

ReplyDeletePlease before you say something crazy know that black people's names are their identity. African American people suffered and are still suffering severe identity crisis as a result of slavery. I use to think their names were funny until I befriended one of them at my job, and one way or the other I discovered that their names are actually unique to them and it's their way of creating identity. The way most of them name their kids is by taking two letters from moms name two from dads name and either grandma or grandpa's name. They do so as a way of remembering and holding on to their family tree, because during slavery due to separation of fathers and mothers and siblings from one another they devised it to remember themselves no matter what. If you meet a black person with one of those names ask them where their name is from, and they'll tell you something like my grandma's name is Tracy, my mom's name is queen and my dad's name is Andre so they gave me Trequan.

ReplyDeleteActually in my experience and the experience of my friends and family, ethnic names like Chimamanda, Olabisi Obiageli, chukwuma, wale etc are preferred in corporate America. No one will tell you but names like Nigeriana, Kenya, Porsha, Tequila etc will always count against you. It’s sad that Nigerian stars are now naming their kids Jayden, etc. Those are protest civil rights names by African Americans against the oppression of racism and Jim Crow. Look at most Nigerians that have done well in sports, industry, corporate America etc. They have ethnic names. The system groups us as the single most successful ethnic group with the highest household income in the USA. Why are we abandoning our Nigerian names? Corporate America is very comfortable with our local names and those of Asians but because they know African Americans protest with their names, they unfortunately do this which is unfair and ungodly. My take is, why Name a person Mercedes or Porscha or Nigeriana. Even those of us with Nigerian ancestry won’t. Employment is at will and employers don’t owe you any explanation as long as they are following the labor laws in the state and those of the federal government. It’s a sad reality of western life. Be comfortable in your skin and with your name.
