  5. My advice is, if your aim for marrying a Naija man is to relocate, don't try it.
Your fingers go burn well well.

If your aim is to get visa visit a friend and stay, don't try it, you will definitely compromise terribly to elongate your stay and when you are caught and blacklisted, you will never enter not just US but any western country and their allies again.

  9. As yourself these questions:
    • What are you coming to do? Not to be disrespectful but what is your game plan. Do you want to become further your studies and pursue a profession, do you want to start a business, what do you want to do? If you cannot answer this question you may end up doing menial jobs and getting frustrated, constantly looking back at how good you had it in Nigeria. Your failure, if you do not have a plan, will be your fault and not the fault of your host country.
    • Also, what will be your immigration status? Are you coming with a Green Card, or are you coming to get stuck? Trust me you don’t want to come here (to the USA) and be living in bondage (so to say), you wont be able to travel back to Nigeria, you will be scare to do basic things like drive, etc. some people can be encouraging you that all will be well, and that you should come and figure things out as you go but trust me when you get here you are on your own.
    • As for schools your neighborhood will determine the “quality” of school your children attend. So if you cannot afford to live in a good neighborhood your children may end up going to a “bad” school and mingling with children that will expose them to “bad” things. Put simply

    My advice (for the USA):
    • Talk to an immigration lawyer on your options. Matter of fact I will suggest you talk to two lawyers just to compare notes cos some lawyers will leur you here and just keep using you as a cash cow, continuously collecting money to solve a problem that in reality can never be solved.
    • Remember my earlier question “what are you coming to do?” well I suggest you get to it as soon as you step foot into the country. If it is a business start getting approvals and making moves, if it is schooling get to it. Do not sit around and stry to “settle down” first.
America is a comfortable and beautiful country you can get carried away with the comfort and forget your goals very easily. The goal is to stay focused, don’t compare yourself to others and be realistic. Most importantly assume you will have zero help cos most likely you will.

    Best of luck dear.

    3. Most Nigerians don't have any reason to go over there. They just want to leave here.

For me, I can only travel for school and vacation. Relocation is not on my mind yet.

      Delete
    4. I think your last paragraph is very key. DO some research, find out what is obtainable where you are going to make the changes. I work in a Canadian university and it totally breaks my heart to see the number of Nigerians who still apply to schools abroad with CVs that have LGA, gender, state of origin and religion. That alone is a red flag, you must fine-tune your resume to meet the style of the country where you are going. As small as it sounds, it is very important. The most aggressive email inquiries I get are from Nigerians because we assume the way we talk and communicate should be accepted everywhere. Attention to details is key, if you don't pay attention to those things, you will find it very hard keeping a job and generally living abroad.

This is just the problem. Once "abroad" is mentioned, you come with what you have predetermined to hear. How do you prove that the rest who are not saying "encouraging things" are lying? That is why Nigerian girls are so vulnerable and being trafficked to Italy and other European countries daily. They will always paint it sweet.

My bro in law just relocated from Spain to Sweden and he said it's a very beautiful , lovely and peaceful country, schools are affordable too, unlike Britain where the immigration rules are tougher now, schools are very expensive too, it was easy when we came in years ago, but now everything has changed, the govt has closed majority of those small colleges that enabled international students to enter easily, and now you need to have thousands of pounds in your account untouched and you must meet the requirements,. Now we are helping my younger sis get into uni in sweden and as an international students, you can apply for their visa after 5 years .So I will say don't come to the UK to come and live except your partner is British, then it ll favour you, also endevour to go back to your country after completing your studies , pls don't think of getting stuck. And I'll say why don't you try some beautiful countries in Europe? Morway, finlamd, including sweden are beautiful Scandinavian countries thats worth tryimg. As for me I'm still in UK, because hubby is British and I have my kids too, so I can't complain for now.

  16. Don't relocate to the USA if you have nothing to offer. You must be highly skilled eg medical doctor, engineer, etc, or willing to go to school again. It takes a lot to get settled- time, money, focus, grit etc; so if you have none of these just don't bother. Nothing is guaranteed but employment opportunities are much better here than in Naija and if you prove your worth with good work ethic and productivity nothing can stop you.

    1. Unfortunately, it is. They know that English is our official language but they still insist on getting proof of language proficiency. I think is one of the scams of the process. There is also a major disconnect between the Canadian Immigration and employers. They do not trust our education, whether WES has evaluated or not. Do what yo need to do as the requirements of the process but there will be a lot of adjustments when you get here.

      Delete
    2. It is a vital requirement, you have to take the test seriously because the higher your scores the higher your chances of getting selected.
It is a very reliable process, just follow the process and trust me you will not regret it.

  25. I relocated to Canada in May 2016 and the truth is there is a lot of mental adjustments involved. I swallowed my pride and went back to school, It was tough to manage but I had a plan. You must have a plan and be realistic in your expectations. It is not your country and nobody is going to hand anything to you on a platter. If you are looking for menial jobs, there are a lot of them but if you are looking to go the professional route, you must be wiling to study or take certification exams.
Hubby got a job 9 days after we landed, turned it down and got another job with a bank about 3 weeks later. He did that for three months and got a manager position in a govt organization. He had degrees that were globally recognized. I am currently on my second job since graduation and I couldn't be more grateful. We saved a lot and didn't try to live above our means. We bought clothes from gently-used stores and saved up down payment for our first home, we have now moved into that house. The temptation to want to buy things you ordinarily can't afford is high, there is access to credit and people will offer you all sorts of 'deals', don't be fooled. Without a plan, you will be neck deep in debt before you even know it.
For general advice to our men, I find that a lot of Nigerian women are resentful and very bitter because we are coming from a country where you can have a live-in help for less than $100 a month and when they get here, they have to do everything themselves without the men lifting a finger. Please sirs, if you must relocate, please be ready to help out with chores except of course you have $1000 and counting a month to get help. It is supposed to be common sense but the reality on ground is shocking. She cannot go to school or work full time and run a home with kids and not break down. Biko, help us. Is it worth it? Absolutely. Education is free, both my kids have had minor surgeries and I didn't pay a cent. No country is perfect, the loneliness and homesickness can be intense but we are hanging in there. I do not regret the move at all. I can't remember anything else, if you have questions, you can ask me.

Congrats on the admission. Have you confirmed that the School that has accepted you is eligible for Post Graduate Work Permit? Most Government institutions are but just double check to be sure. Study permit requirements vary depending on the country that you are applying from. Check the IRCC website to see the complete requirements. Have it at the back of your mind that they know people are trying to migrate through that route. So you may want to prove to them that you have strong ties in Nigeria that will make you go back, even though you don't plan to. Then there is the proof of funds part. You may need to seek professional help, like get a certified immigration consultant to put you through so that you don't miss anything. All the best.

    4. @ Anon 22:56, What province are you looking at settling in? I find most people land in the Ontario and British Columbia when they don't have a lot of money. Those are very expensive provinces to live in even if you have people to help you ease the settling process. The trick is to land in the smaller provinces and then move around when you are better settled. I am in a small province now and looking to move in like two to three years. I am building experience and equity now that will help me ease in somewhere else. Just like i said before, be realistic in your expectations and you will be just fine. All the best

  27. The grass is green depending on how you "water" it to be fair. Most people travel with the mindset that they'll make it in a year and build a house back home, get a fancy car bla bla. It takes hard work and dedication - living abroad is not for the lazy joe! Whether you work menial jobs or in a corporate organisation.
Job opportunities are endless and there is nothing like nepotism or " my uncle knows the boss" etc. If you are good at what you do and can articulate it at an interview, the job is yours!Whether you're green, black, white or even purple lol.
When I say opportunities, it's not just about working in a corporate organisation but whatever your dream or desires are, there is no holding back if you decide to take the bull by the horns and go for it! There are classes, courses that'll teach you and even organisations to volunteer with.

Travel to other countries on holidays becomes a lot easier.

People living with disabilities have the best life! There is nothing like discrimination if you have some sort of disability. You'll get the same job as the average Joe! From restaurants, to car parks, to cinemas, public rest rooms etc, they all have facilities for the disabled. A supermarket car park would be full but left with disabled parking - you dare not park there if you do not have a disability car batch. If not, you'll be prosecuted.

The difference between the rich and poor is inconsequential. Everyone is treated the same. If you get some loose money and go to to The Shard for dinner, you'll be treated the same as the billionaire also there to have dinner.

For the slay queens and fashionistas, you don't have to break the bank to get some good, quality outfits at great prices and I'm not just referring to Primark! Lots of high street stores selling cool affordable outfits.

If you're a concert goer, you can get affordable tickets to all concerts, festivals that'll be featuring all the celebs you know...

    The list is endless.

For schools, as long as you can afford the fees as international student, you have all the choice in the world including real reviews.

Even if you have no papers, you can still enjoy the good life. What the heck! Life's too bloody short mate!

    1. Ask him to sponsor your fiancee Visa. With the fiancee Visa, you come into the US and have to get married within 90 days. After that you can then adjust status to a permanent resident (conditional for 2 years, then unconditional after that)

My parents have told me to stop discouraging people from traveling abroad because it seems like you're enjoying life abroad and you want them to be suffering in 9ja. So, I have just three statements of advice to say to you if you intend relocating to the US.

      1. The grass is not always greener on the other side. Don't let people deceive you, a life without papers is a hard life, it is living in bondage part 1 &2. So, try and ensure you migrate legally. If you're legal, you can start talking about opportunities.

      2. When you get to the US legally, please be careful of the people you relate with. Unfortunately, some people carried their witchcraft from 9ja to the US and if you're not discerning, they'll make your destiny stagnant. I kid you not! Some people have been in the US for donkey years, they'll even be bragging that they've been bere for 25 years but you look at their lives and no remarkable progress. They'll then use their crab spirit to discourage you from attempting professional jobs. They'll condemn you to menial jobs even if you have a Master's degree or they'll tell you your degree is worthless because it's not American. Discard that mentality quick because your work experience in your field counts. Please aim high and disconnect yourself from pessimists.

      3. Hold God tight. I assure you, when your walk is right with God, He'll open doors for you beyond your expectations. My husband could not boast of $1k in his account when I married him and relocated to join him. In less than 4 years of marriage, we've been able to accumulate almost $30k in cash by saving and trusting God for financial breakthrough. Better forget posing on the gram and utilize your toro kobo wisely.
If you are a legal immigrant in TX and you need a job, drop your email, i"ll send you the name of some companies in a sector that is actively hiring. I know it can be difficult to find your feet when you relocate, so that will be my own contribution to helping somebody out.

  30. I'm in the UK. I came here as a kid and I am a naturalised citizen.

    MY EXPERIENCE
When I first arrived, I was depressed.
Missed all my friends and family back home. All I ever wanted was to go return to the fatherland. However, as I grew, the UK grew and developed into a great multicultural hub.

I am now in my mid/late twenties and I have grown to see the UK evolve into a great location for any forward thinking youth. Whether black
or white.. everyone has an opportunity. Go to the big city firms and see young black talents killing it. These are exciting times to be black, educated and ambitious in the UK. (BUT IT DEPENDS ON THE KIND OF CROWD YOU ROLL WITH)

To put it simply,I hardly miss home now.. even tho I try to visit every 2 years. Nigerians are everywhere in the UK .. fun is where you make it.. theres no Nigerian meal that you cant find here. The afrobeats scene here is hot.. Naija artists come for shows a lot and the crowd is always liveee ..

There's also an extra advantage in getting to mingle with other African brothers and sisters. The cultural mix generates a brand new black culture of its own and it's beautiful.

I have been blessed to mingle with a lot of Nigerian students who came here on student visas. Unfortunately, after studies most of them are left with no choice but to return home. The few that stay are those who are bright enough to secure employment with firms willing to sponsor their visas .. mostly in the Engineering field.

The only other professionals that have hope of getting stay here are medical doctors (if they pass the exams)

But please note, if you want to move ahead in life.. you MUST leave London.
There are other cities full of jobs, lower costs of living and better quality of people.

I am sorry but too many Nigerians & other migrants have turned London ta back up Lagos.. LOL.

If you want to raise a family please try cities such as Milton Keynes, Cambridge, Leeds, Manchester etc.. you will meet lots of progressive professional blacks in these places.. unlike the ones in London who are still in hustle mode..

    A word is enough.

High cost to rent or buy a home, transportation, food is pricey too, clothes is probably the cheapest thing here. Truth be told, I am ready to ship out and go back to my base or maybe Panama or Colombia where your money can go further and better climate overall.

  34. I live in Norway. Been living here for 4 years. I left my job in Nigeria. A very good job as a Telecoms Engineer and came over here for my Masters. So I came in legitimately. The journey was not easy at the beginning. Having to study for almost a session without earning cash was frustrating. I attended classes and spent my spare time searching part time jobs online. Meanwhile, people in Naija assumed I was well settle already. After 8 months staying here, I got a part time job in a telecoms firm here as I was entitled to work based on my Student residence permit.
Fast forward to 2 years later, when my course ended, I was given a post study visa and got a job that sponsors my Residency. The pay is very good. I am not treated like a second class citizen and conditions of living are excellent. My advise to anyone planning to go abroad to live is that they should do so with Legit documents/reasons. Also its not always easy at the beginning but with time and patience things get sorted out. I do love Norway and if you can come in as a student for starters, opportunities are endless.

  35. Anywhere abroad is all about money, money..money..money!!!
Bring your own money with you, pay for your own things, save your money wisely, spend your money carefully, work for your own money and enjoy your money!!!
If you do all these things, you will thrive, safe, succeed and live well. But if you don't have money, or depend on others, or involve yourself in bad things for money, or you are lazy and not serious to go find your own money, then you may become stranded, broke, enter troubles, fail abroad.
*Learn not to be copying or also competing with other people. Rather invest your energy, time or money into self development.
*Learn not to indulge in negative behaviors or those types of characters that people display in Nigeria and it is acceptable over there, like gossiping, fanatic religious belief, tribalism or prejudice against others, yahoo things & 419, flirting and reckless sexual behaviors.
*Learn to obey and respect the law of the land where ever you are, and avoid falling victim also to crime. Rape, indecent bodily contact or exposure, stealing, false allegations, fraud, handling or possessing illegal substance or drugs, bad debts or credit / money problems can result in serious criminal offence or even long term jail time for you.

Respect, respect, respect...ALWAYS RESPECT YOURSELF & OTHERS; THEN YOU WILL BE FINE ABROAD.

  36. My take on this:

I live in the UK....the UK is extremely expensive!
I study full time for an M.sc, I work 4 evenings weekly. I have got kids too. How do I cope? Hmmmm! Dear Nigerians,do not move to any country where you do not have a resident permit, the right to live and work or better still a Permanent residency.
I am able to juggle 4 things at a time because I am a citizen so I get all my entitlements, else I would have been financially messed up. My bills are quite huge because I am a self-funding student. Well, I am not entitled to student finance because it's my second masters degree after I decided to switch fields. Move to somewhere cheaper outside London to cut costs, from Milton Keynes or Reading you can commute to London! There are other cities like Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle where you can get good jobs too and save a lot. Now, I wouldn't advise anyone coming to the UK as a student if you plan to stay back after graduation. Try Germany, Sweden, Norway...the only challenge in these European countries is the language. That language problem on its own is a very major challenge.
Then as a student you can always go to Canada if your family can afford it. You have a very big chance of getting your PR through that route.
As a family, try the Canadian Express entry route if you and your spouse have got the right qualifications and the money to fund it.
Relocating to Canada via the Express entry route is not without its challenges too, integrating and getting a job with your Nigerian qualifications can be quite difficult. I'll give you a tip....what my friend did before moving to Canada was to train as business analyst/product manager, wrote her CBAP exams and finished her masters degree from a UK university, that way she had Canadian professional qualifications together with her work experience and Uk degrees.
What I am saying in essence is, before moving to Canada, prepare yourself. Do your research thoroughly. Do not be caught unawares. The grass is not always greener on the other side.

  37. I relocated about 2 decades ago. There was a serious scarcity of health care professionals but not now. Please ignore the poster that said “apply as a nurse from Nigeria”. It doesn’t work that way again. I am a Health care professional not a nurse but there was a dearth of all from doctors to nurses and some schools were churning out RNs in 12 to 18 months. The smart Nigerians who came with English, religion even engineering degreesa did RN. Not that easy now.

First thing is what did you study or what are you willing to study in a short time. If you carry a B1 visa, what plan do you have to convert it to H1 or at least legalize your stay. Once you are illegal in the USA, to become legal is nearly impossible. Quite frankly all Nigerians quality as refugees. The Northern Nigerians are terrorist refugees and some people being terrorized by herdsman, I said may qualify as refugees in danger of being murdered by fundamentalist herdsmen. Just have your plan whether you are from Boko Haram territory or from the south, everyone knows Nigeria is a mess, there is no shame is stating the obvious. If you have a disease the type orphan drugs are used to treat and which may benefit scientists, AFTER getting here you can file a medical asylum. it’s better to get your visa first, though.Do not marry Akata for paper. There is a way that seems right but the end may be bad. Do you have a relative with an established company in your area of specialization that if his tax and financial history were scrutinized by IRS will stand? They can attempt to file for you but it must be a job that was posted and no American will do it. There are stipulations for advertising the job. Not in a Nigerian restaurant or ethnic grocery store, it must be a mainstream business that Americans patronize. For those who worked hard and honest and have $500k, you can google EB5 visa. Invest that money and provide some Americans with jobs and your green card is faster. For folks like Wole Soyinka, they apply under EB1 or candidates with exceptional ability. Their queue is also short. However if you are an international artiste like Femi Kuti, not Nollywood runs girls but Achebe type or chimamanda or even Davido ( I know he’s American) you may apply under that category. If your $500k was looted, they will not approve you. If you have a PhD from any Nigerian university you will not be approved for EB1 or EB2 green card. We were blessed my husband had a PhD from a top American university and had published a little before returning to Nigeria. We had friends with Engineering PhDs from UI and,Unilag that had to leave to avoid becoming illegal

Taxes are high in America but if you cut your coat according to your material ( which is hard because of demands from relatives in Nigeria) you will live your dreams. I started by taking several exams. I later went to their school after settling. Be ready to retrain.

If you don’t belong to any of thos categories, did you know artisans like Plumbers and electricians etc are in demand in America now. They have their groups and train in community colleges and are highly paid. If you call a plumber, he charges $75 just for the call not for the repairs or materials. My husband and I always wonder why Nigerians don’t look that way. Mechanics are licensed and are well paid. Most jobs are licensed. The problem is that Nigerian women start braiding hair in their apartments to avoid taxes and never grow or pay into Medicare and social security for old age. That’s not being smart in the long run! Whatever you plan or do, never become illegal even for one day in America or marry Akata. There are other ways. Move and seek advice with progressive upwardly mobile professional Nigerians. Don’t stay in the “”Labonitos of southwest Houston” or north side Chicago or even south side and in breed bad ideas. No abuse please.

  38. Another thing is, avoid collecting government assistance unless you need it. Don’t throw a $5000 party and have your kids on free lunch, live in section 8, collect WIC, SNAP etc. when you are filling your green card and citizenship forms later, it may haunt you. It’s not a victimless crime, some of us pay our taxes to fund it and that’sthe Way Americans see it. You throwing $5k party, me giving your kid lunch. It will haunt you later. I brought my kids here and we had little money but they never had free lunch, or snap and we rented what we could afford and didn’t apply for all these magomago section 8. I don’t even know how they get it.

I hear some stores in Nigeria sell grocery from the snap and WIC program!! Nothing is free. Uncle Sam may be waiting for you

  41. I live in US and have more money than I need. How? I worked my ass off, saved every dime and started a business. No loans. No credit card. I lived within my means. For 5 years I was incommunicando. People come to US and get carried away by the glamour and get stuck in the revolving door of debt. You can make it here as long as you are independent-minded. You can't have it all. The only place I have had terrible experience is love. There is always a trade off.
