Heavy Metals Discovered In Abuja Meat

The National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development has discovered heavy metals and antimicrobial resistance in meat products in the Federal Capital Terrotory , Abuja.

The NIPRD said a high consumption of such metals in meat could damage the kidneys , noting that the relevant authorities had been informed and further researches were on .

The NIPRD Director -General , Dr Obi Adigwe , stated this in an interview with our correspondent , saying “ a significant amount of veterinary products tested were found to have Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus which were antibiotic resistant” in addition to the Lead heavy metals .

The DG said the heavy metals products “ if taken at a high concentration would shut down the kidneys ” .
Adigwe added that the institute was planning to do a country - wide survey on the veterinary products .

The DG said , “ Our mandate is to ensure that Nigerians have better access to affordable health care. Also , we want to make these improvements sustainable . So , the research was undertaken by a crack team at NIPRD .

“ The team , a few months ago , undertook a study where they sampled veterinary products in Abuja and some of these products and outputs were tested in our laboratories . So those veterinary products were tested in the laboratories and there were some alarming findings in them . A significant amount of the veterinary products tested were found to have Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus which were antibiotic resistant . One of the antibiotics they resist is Amoxicillin Clavulanic acid .

“ Even more worrisome was the presence of heavy metals in those products . Antimicrobial resistance means that if you consume the meat and over time , your body gets used to those microbes , which are already resistant. The day you have an infection and then you take the antibiotics for which the microbe is resistant, the antibiotic will not work .

“ However , on the heavy metals in the products , when they are taken in a high concentration , they can shut down the kidneys immediately . So that study identified a high level of lead which is very injurious to organs in the body . So that is alarming and we have written to the relevant authorities . ”

Adigwe added that the institute was planning to partner other agencies to carry out the country - wide study and examine the rural areas particularly .

  2. GMO things.... Nigeria and Nigerians are not ready for the consequences of that stupid deadly bill that the former administration signed into place.

And I'm even more surprised that no journalists have taken this very crucial topic up....

    1. Yet ignorant people would shout and scream in praise of the former Agric minister not knowing that he introduced poison and danger into our once-upon-a-time healthy foods.

    2. What do you mean by GMO things. Who told you that we have GMO livestock in Nigeria? Always do your findings before crying out ignorantly. The lead presence is most likely due to their feeds and the means used in killing them. May God save us all in this country

    3. So many ignorant people on here! So, you do not know that there are GMO livestock in Nigeria now, I pity you all.

You see the reason I said, Nigerians are not ready for what awaits them yet.
With the bad system in Nigeria, y'all should be better informed and update yourselves about what you are consuming because, no one is gonna paste in the front of their products that it contains GMO.

  3. @Ms A. Educate yourself young woman. What has GMO got to do with this?

Do you know that abbttoirs use tyres when singeing meat? Have you seen the dirty environment of these abattoirs and the dirty water they use to wash the meats?

I suggest you visit either Karu or gwagwalada abattoirs before you come up with that your blame game.

    1. Ferida, you should be one to educate yourself young woman!

      Go educate yourself about GMO.

OH sorry, you are one of the wicked people that pushed the deadly bill to be signed.

    3. I have done postgraduate research on as abattoirs and Ferida is spot on. Use of spent tires to singe hides introduces heavy metals and unsanitary operations introduce those microbes.

    4. Lol Ms.A you are actually spot on!! You guys talk about tires bla bla bla go and find out what type of medicines and hormones they give animals BEFORE they get to the abbatoirs.. Ofcourse there are sanitary concerns but GMO meaning genetically modified is the main problem. A chicken/cow is normally artificially insiminated with the sperm of GM cows to create zero nutrition monsters sorry meats. The focus is on how fast they grow, how big they get, how much milk they can produce etc they are fed antibiotics, are caged in a shed somewhere to just produce get big and get slaughtered.for people to consume it’s disgusting. Pls guys read up before you criticise ms. A

  4. Meat is something that should always be taken in moderation. Too many ppl are eating meat they can't even tell what animal it is, if it is stolen, if the butcher is even licensed and butcher in a hygienic fashion, or if the meat came from a legitimate farm. Just this quest and lust for flesh have ppl eating what they shouldn't. Hopefully this news will cause them to think twice before they purchase.

  7. Something else to note is the use of aluminum foil in cooking, especially roasting. It may look hygienic but it's actually poisonous. Some high percentage of metal from the aluminum foil enters the meat while cooking and this is highly injurious to our health.
