Federal Government Reaches Agreement With ASUU And Releases N15.4bn To Public Universities

The Nigerian government has reached an agreement with striking University lecturers, raising the possibility of ending the teachers’ prolonged industrial action.

The national president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU), Biodun Ogunyemi, said the National Executive Committee of the union will review its decisions based on the new commitment by the federal government.

He said the strike could only be called off after the NEC meeting. He did not say when the meeting will hold.

After the Monday meeting, the labour minister, Chris Ngige, said an agreement had been reached. According to him, the accountant general and the ministry of finance has confirmed with evidence that N15.4 billion had been released to public universities. On earned allowances, Mr Ngige said President Buhari has approved N20 billion to be used to offset the outstanding arrears of the 2009 to 2012 verified earnings in the universities.

  1. This is a welcome development and a good one at that, provided the government remain sincere in their agreement and dealings.

    1. Maybe you follow them useless. Did you see that the arrears were between 2009-2012? Was it this government that owe them or the previous ones?

    2. @anon 10.01, I'm surprised too that the arrears is from 2009. In fact shocked. So many arrears that this government met, cleared and are still clearing.

      Nawah!

    3. Ageless T, you are correct. when it comes to payment of salaries and arrears, this government has done outstandingly well. Forget about other weaknesses. The government gave such much bailout funds to state governments to offset arrears and backlog of payments owed before they came on board. The governors of several states didn’t pay their workers. Pensioners owed by FG are getting it easier than before such as those from the now dead Nigerian airways. People should understand the origin of grievances or problems before running to call other people useless. When in fact, the adjective goes back to them.

    1. Na this government owe them arrears or the previous ones? Between 2009-2012, who was in government? Did you even read it at all? Stella, there is nothing welcome about this. In developed universities, monies are paid by the government to upgrade university labs, structures and boost research. At our universities, lecturers only talk about monies for their pockets, retirement age increase and other nonsense. Academia is not for money making. It is about knowledge production. If you are not aware, Nigerian lecturers earn well based on Nigerian standard. Ask assistant professor las in the US and Canada what their monthly pays are. You will be shocked at how small it is compared to just a bachelor degree holder in companies in the same countries. But our lecturers earn far more than people in companies.
