INEC Rejects Oby Ezekwesili’s Withdrawal From Presidential Race

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it is too late for any candidate to withdraw from contesting any position in the upcoming elections.

INEC said this in reaction to Oby Ezekwesili stepping down as presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN). Reacting via a statement, Rotimi Oyekanmi, chief press secretary to the INEC chairman, said November 17 was the last date for withdrawal.

“It is impossible for any presidential candidate to withdraw from the race now. According to the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2019 General Elections, the last day for withdrawal by candidates or replacement of withdrawn candidates by political parties was 17th November 2018 for Presidential and National Assembly Elections.

“The deadline for Ezekwesili or any candidate in that category to withdraw or be replaced has passed.

  3. It was rightly stipulated so I don't know why she decided to pull out at this point in time. Whatever be the case, let good reasoning prevail among them all.

    1. Less I forgot, the massive crowd that welcome and received Atiku today at Kaduna is unimaginable. The man is greatly loved. Time up for El Rufai. There is tension and panic in the camp of APC at the moment.

  14. Hahahahah politics is so funny. Of course they cannot force her to keep campaigning. I think what it means is that her name will still appear on the ballot paper, even if she no longer desires the position. Ballot papers may have been printed already.

  16. The likes of you shouting is nt by force are the reason why Nigeria is where it is today. Always doin wrong thing thing at the wrong times. Was the terms and condition not spell out to the candidates by INEC right from on set? Why did she fail to comply?

  18. nobody is forcing her to contest, but there is a grace period for a party to pull out or replace a candidate which has elapsed, so it is too late for her to pull out. even if she isn't actively campaigning or involved in the electioneering process, her name and party logo will still appear on the ballot paper.
