Court Order Arrest Of Former Footballer Jay Jay Okocha

A Lagos Division of the Lagos State High Court in Igbosere has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of former Super Eagles star, Austin Okocha, over tax evasion charges.

Mr Okocha – or Jay Jay Okocha as he is popularly known – has repeatedly failed to appear before the court to answer why he allegedly failed to pay his income taxes.

Adedayo Akintoye, the judge, issued the warrant for the arrest of the former Eagles captain on January 29 and thereafter adjourned until February 19.

However, on February 19, the prosecution had not effected the arrest forcing the judge to, again, adjourn till April 15 and ordering that the warrant be executed by then.

The football star is facing a three-count charge instituted by the Lagos State Ministry of Justice bordering on failure to furnish his income returns and nonpayment of tax.

The state filed the charges through its prosecutor, Jide Martins, in June 2017 and the suit began four months later.

The defendant, however, had failed to appear in court.

After several adjournments without Mr Okocha appearing despite having been served the court papers, Mr Martins prayed the court to issue a bench warrant for his arrest.

According to the prosecutor, Mr Okocha had failed to furnish his income returns for tax purposes to the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service.

Mr Martins also said that the defendant had failed to pay his income taxes.

He said the offences contravened Sections 56 (a) and (b) of the Lagos State Revenue Administration Law No. 8, 2006 and Section 94 (1) of the Personal Income Tax Act Cap P8, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

    1. He may have been paying but not the right percentage. My company pays yet they still said we didn't pay d right percentage. They now calculated the back taxes and said we still owe them 200m or so.

    2. But why would they accept payment if it wasn't the right percentage at first? Shouldn't they have told your company earlier that what they paid isn't the right figure? Or don't they indicate the real figures in their register? I think the tax collectors are criminally minded people if they can do such a thing.

    3. I don't know for them o. They calculated for as far back as 2002 before majority of us even worked there.
It's the auditor that understands how it happened. I don't.

    4. Teejay, just so you know that tax office can accept payment even though it's not complete. It's done anywhere in the world. They will take it and keep chasing up for the balance.

    5. Teejay, it is 100% possible, you can pay less than or more than in taxes, hence you have tax refund. They might have used a wrong tax code for you if e.g its a new business or you're just changing jobs and your new employer has not updated the tax office. What most developed countries do is either roll it over to the next tax year, meaning you'll pay more than or notify you so you can send them a cheque and vice-versa if its the other way round.

    6. USA does not dot that. Once, you have a new job, you're made to fill out yourinformation on a form and that's what your new employer will use for your taxes. You can't start your new job without it.

  16. you guys should Google the history of Taxation, we have mineral resources that were processed using tax payers money. now that they have been processed in a standard society, the government is supposed to use the proceeds to prospect for more, create multiple export commodities and run the country strictly on that. No need to bother the citizens about taxation anymore. That is why they have excess money to loot. For a country with oil the Federal government ought to have a welfare package for its citizens. You guys should Google Libya's Government policies, before they killed Gaddafi. That is the model society for an oil producing country.
