INEC Has Postponed Saturday's Presidential Election To Next WEEK

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has postponed the February 16 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The polls will now hold Saturday February 23.

This was one of the decisions reached early Saturday morning in a meeting INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, had with the 12 national commissioners in Abuja.

Addressing the media at about 2:45am, Yakubu explained that the shift was mainly due to logistics problems faced by the commission.

“Following a careful review, the commission came to the conclusion that proceeding with the elections will not be feasible”, he said.

Yakubu explained that the decision was taken in order to give the nation a free, fair and credible exercise.

“Furthermore, the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly and FCT elections will hold on Saturday March 9”, the electoral commission chief added.

The national elections are expected to hold at 119,973 polling units across the country while collation of results will take place in 8,809 Registration Areas or Wards, 774 Local Government Areas and 36 States and the FCT.

This is not the first time that the commission would postpone a scheduled general election.

  4. So INEC finally boycotted sorry I mean postponed the election to next week. This was exactly what Ayodele Fayose said two days ago, that the commission is planning to shift the election, but they kept saying that the commission have no intention or reason whatsoever to shift the election. So what did change or happened now?

Do you think if Buhari was confident of winning today, the election would have been shifted? The same Jonathan scenario is beginning to  play out again. Don't I just love history?

What will one week do for them that the whole one year they have been planning couldn't do for them. Which logistics are they talking about? The same logistics  they keep telling us all along that is fully covered and taken care of. Didn't they tell us they are fully on ground and prepared for this elections.

When Good luck shifted the elections, did it guaranteed him winning? Obviously No. So what makes APC in connivance with INEC thinks it will be any way different?

Truth is that every attempt of them to rigged the election was uncovered, so they need extra one week to re-strategize. Don't forget, already thumb printed ballot papers for APC were found in Kano, Ogun and Ikorodu. Now you understand how Kano got the million votes they used in defeating Jonathan.

I won't be surprised to hear that Oshiomhole was the one that instructed INEC to postpone the elections, for he is good at such criminality. Remember what Buhari said, no one can unseat him. Isn't that the height of desperation? Now you understand again why the elections were shifted as to destabilize and disfranchise the people but believe me, we will beat them at their own game.

    2. INEC Chairman has to be sacked and arrested. He is not fit to carry on with the election. @Blessed Princess

    3. Logistics reasons? What a very silly and easy excuse,Fayose already said it 2 days ago, what happens to those who has already traveled to vote ,the corp members, the foreign and local observers?

    4. Attahiru Jega on his own didn't shifted 2015 elections but Jonathan did. So why is Yakubu shifting this election if an order from a sitting president. This shows partisanship of the INEC that supposed to be an unbiased umpire.

    5. Read Atiku’s full statement below:

As you know, the Independent National Electoral Commission has announced a postponement of the elections until 23 February and 9 March respectively.

The Buhari administration has had more than enough time and money to prepare for these elections and the Nigerian people were poised and ready to perform their civic responsibility by voting in the elections earlier scheduled for Saturday, 16 February, 2019.

This postponement is obviously a case of the hand of Esau but the voice of Jacob. By instigating this postponement, the Buhari administration hopes to disenfranchise the Nigerian electorate in order to ensure that turn out is low on the rescheduled date. Nigerians must frustrate their plans by coming out in even greater numbers on Saturday, 23 February and Saturday, 9 March respectively.

Knowing that the Nigerian people are determined to reject them, they are desperate and will do anything in their power to avoid their rejection by the Nigerian people.

Their plan is to provoke the public, hoping for a negative reaction, and then use that as an excuse for further anti-democratic acts.

As such, I call on all Nigerians to be patient. We have tolerated the maladministration of this government for four years. We can extend our tolerance a few more days and give them our verdict via our votes.

Maintain the peace and be law abiding. Do not react to this provocation with anger, violence or any action that might be exploited by those who do not want this election to hold. Remain calm. We will overcome this. You can postpone an election, but you cannot postpone destiny.

Please come out to vote on Saturday, 23 February and Saturday, 9 March respectively. Frustrate those who do not want this election to hold by coming out in very large numbers. That is the best antidote to their plans.

May God bless you and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

  5. Na so we hear oo... It must be really hard for INEC to have made this decision considering how much they had insisted there won’t be a postponement. The big question is what are the implications? Will campaigns continue? Will school children go back to school or continue with a longer break? Those who have traveled what would they do? Corps members that have been posted to various places nko? It must have been really hard for INEC really.

Whaf happens to those that travelled? Money wasted? Those that have events for next week?
    These people are not serious.
But anything is better than postponing some while others continue. Cos that would have fuelled rigging and violence like it hapoened in Osun.

  10. They want to perfect the rigging very well. After 4 years inec cannot get it right. Just 3 hours to elections you postpone.

I pity people that will want to demonstrate or fight this.

Buhari cabals told them to postpone. They saw defeats glaringly facing them.

What happens to workers who have travelled in a week’s leave for this, what about sensitive election materials already delivered and unsealed ready for use today?

  17. In a normal country, this man would be sacked. But then again this is Nigeria where we accept nonsense, or go behind our phones like we are doing now instead of matching on the streets peacefully to demand our rights. Why can't we all boycott these elections until they give us a long term reason that this will not happen again. This is 2019 for God's sake.

  18. Saw the news around 4am on bbc, i had to log on to confirm it. Bunch of incompetent fools we have, running the affairs of this country. INEC had a whole four years to prepare for this one day, and they just couldn't do it!
Whatever happened to a 24hrs headups, i'm sure they knew even 48hrs ago that it won't be possible to hold the polls today, but mba they had to do it the typical Nigerian way.
My friend just called me now, he travelled all the way from lag to enugu, he was like "abamade have you seen how useless the country is?"

  23. I travelled 14 hours to go and vote. They cannot discourage me. I will travel 14 hours again next week. The money pain me but I'm thinking of 4 years suffering. My vote must count, Nigerians shouldn't be discouraged. We must not allow plans to rig the election work. No more to incompetency!

These people don't even consider us before making decisions, People travelled for this election, People have events slated for next week.
I've lost the very little faith I have for this country.

  26. If you think voting is the only way to change things in Nigeria, then we are even more delusional than I thought. So in 2019 we can't boycott these elections and demand our rights by protesting peacefully as to the reasons why inec thinks we are stupid.

  29. Suddenly people's memories are hazy! During Jonathan's era, same thing happened! A situation where every Dike, Abiodun and Umar is a Professor, all sorts of opinions will be flying around! I am very sure most of the people complaining on here don't even know the meaning of "Logistics" if you ever run a company or you work at the logistics department you will understand the challenges that can come up at the last minute of execution. Like I said, most people passing comments are too blind with sentiments. In as much as I understand the inconveniences, still some people should stop reasoning with their ANUS! Jeez!
