The consumers who spoke with Daily Sun lamented that the fake Titus fish surfaced in markets around May and July last year but the quantity was not as much as it is today in the markets.
The consumers said for the past two months, importers of Titus fish have concentrated more in bringing in more fake Titus into the country in order to maximise profits.
They said the Titus fish is one of the most expensive fishes in the market as one is being sold for about N500 and above and lamented that the Titus fish available in frozen foods outlets today are no longer the same fish they used to buy, as it is now tasteless and no longer nutritious
The Sun
*I hate this fish so much...That snake pattern on its skin freaks me out!!!
True. The influx of the fake Titus has made me port to sabida fish
ReplyDeleteI tire for Nigerians o! I even saw a fake dog yesterday. It was small and barked like a dog but I knew it was fake. The owner told me the specie but I no gree! Na fake dog! That fake Titus fish must be made in China!
DeleteI buy a carton of this fish every month,oh Lord save us o, I will just buy dry fish and rest
DeleteWhat!! It's even more expensive than chicken.
Anon 11:57 you wan kill person with laugh, real fake dog.
DeleteOsikwa fake titus fish, there is one they called KAMPALA titus fish is it among the fake? Oh Chineke Nna umu gi no gi n'akaoooo!
ReplyDeleteThat is the name. Kampala is the fake titus.
DeleteI love the fish, why is Nigerian govt a bad news in all ramification. It is their responsiblity to protect the citizens. They have a body responsible for importation of foods from outside, so they need to be sure the originals are the ones coming into the country and not the things to harm its citizens. Our leaders are just a bunch of disappointment.
ReplyDeleteI heard Peace Air are already planning to buy the Boeing Max plane that crashed both in Ethiopia and China, and govt of Nigeria wont do anything to prevent them from.putting people's lives in jeopardy by banning them from bringing it into the country, this same plane has been banned from UK airspace, but our beloved country, we have nobody to fight for us. Such a shame
They importers will bribe them to face the other side.
DeleteThank God, the Boeing 737 has been stopped from any operation world wide yesterday if not they would have brought it in and who do you blame? Gullible Nigerian consumers that know how to complain online but can't take action.
Online complainers, you sabi us.
DeleteMy brother bought the fake Titus for me last month and the seller told him it is the original one. I tire for Naija.
ReplyDeleteThank God we don't eat titus fish in my house. The snake like pattern on its body makes my mum hate it and my husband does not like it too
ReplyDeleteIt is very nutritious
DeleteStella u are missing.. This is the sweetest fish..I only eat this fish and cat fish
ReplyDeleteWhat’s the difference between the real and the fake?
ReplyDeleteHello my fellow Nigerians, there's nothing like fake Titus..it is only here in Nigeria that we gives names that are not appropriate to things.
DeleteThe fish being referred to as fake is called Mackerel which also happens to be the name of the so called Original Titus.
both are fishes from the sea..but have different Skin patterns and taste.
Nigerians call one Titus and call the supposed fake Kampala.
its just that some consumers might not be able to tell the difference if u dont know what to look out for.
At the end of the day all na Fish..
The difference is in the taste. The taste of the fake one is horrible. Though hubby does not know the difference. Before I buy I will ask , do you have white Titus if yes I buy. Though I only trust two women to answer truthfully. But as of two weeks ago I did not see any to buy. Is just the fake that is everywhere. So bye bye to Titus fish for now. Catfish has taken over. I can not use my money to buy rubbish
DeleteYeah..you right.
DeleteThe white one with fatty oil is usually sweet.
Ah I bought one yesterday and I regretted it. Bought it for 500 and it ruined my food. Mtcheew yeye importers
ReplyDeleteIt's sold for 230 here in my area. I almost bought it yesterday night but due to change I couldn't get it.
DeleteTry frozen stock fish. It tastes really good and quite affordable too.
ReplyDeletePanla got me for close to a year. It’s healthier.
ReplyDeletePanla my new found love, just checked its nutritional benefits online and its wonderful
DeleteCan't eat panla if its not fried. How do you eat yours?
DeleteMarinate and leave out in the sun for like 3-4 hours to absorb the condiments then deep fry. The taste is heavenly 🥰
DeleteTrue ooo.
ReplyDeleteVery true, I've bought Titus like four times recently and it's tasteless. Will look for another alternative.
ReplyDeletePls try hake it’s better.
DeleteIn my area which is Ikorodu, you are told exactky what you are buying. A kilograms of the fake Titus is sold for 900 naira while the tasty/original is sold for 1200 naira .
ReplyDeleteGod bless you. And also the colour in the fake is quite darker compared to the original that will be glistening. I realized it's the fake market women sell, quorum got me now even though it's another section of the market.
DeleteA quorum is a minimum acceptable level of individuals with a vested interest in a company needed to make the proceedings of a meeting valid.
DeletePlease, expalin your "quorum"?
He or She meant "cold room"....but typed it the way so many people pronounce it...
Delete😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
DeleteIf u want original and live in Lagos,go to ijora olopa👌
DeleteThey tell u what you are buying
It's so sad the Nigeria government doesn't care what the citizens consume, we are in God's hand.

Stella na you sabi o @snake design. My own be say whenever I cook beans or moimoi, plenty titus must dey inside. I heard the original one is white/silver and smaller in size while the fake is darker, bigger and usually has bloodshot eyes. Anyway, I only buy from two people so I dey sure of wetin I dey chop.
ReplyDeleteYour description is VERY correct. After i noticed its tastelessness, i stopped buying the frozen titus & ported to the smoked one.
DeleteAnd all these iya eleja in Lagos markets ain't helping matters at all. The way they hike the prices ehn! If you no buy, dem go abuse you. If you come manage buy but still dey complain, dem go call you alaroro. Infact, sometimes, they'll ignore the female customers when they see a male customer approaching their table cos they know those ones hardly haggle prices. Abeg, who get time to chop insult on top Titus for where eja kika dey! hehehehehe!
Lol @eja kika.

DeleteYummy!
Stella you are missing oh!!
ReplyDeletethat's the best frozen fish
I hate the one being sold here now, we call it mgbeke horse or Eliza... Hehe
Titus is Mackerel. The one you call mgbeke is HorseMackerel. Less taste, bigger in size
DeleteVery true! But have different name for it, as colour and shape not same.
ReplyDeletePlease house there is one they called kampala and it has a good taste
ReplyDeleteThank God I dont eat the fish sef
ReplyDeleteI bought a "normal" titus fish at ogbogonogo market at the close of work one day like that. Normally,i put stuff in my hand bag attimes but on that day,the fish dripped into my bag and by the time i got into a keke, everybody had to keep their nose south.at home, the entire house was engulfed with the smell of the fish. that incident damaged my bag as i couldnt wash away the smell no matter what soap i used. i even sprayed surrati oil perfume inside the bag yet the smell was there. i finally managed to cook with the fish and my pot uptill today is still smelling like that fish. that fish was a bad fish and since that day,i stopped eating iced
ReplyDeletefish.
Is it fake Titus fish or another fish that the sellers are calling Titus. Because I bought it twice because I no see titus and its not sweet, I was told that its another titus
ReplyDeleteI bought fake One yesterday was really tasteless..chaii this Fish cn sweet For Okro Soup o..
ReplyDeleteTitus is a brand name for Mackrel fish that is put in the cans which we call sardines.
ReplyDeleteThe fish is Mackrel and not Titus.
madam Stella pls note
Lol.
DeleteThis is Nigeria.
Lol.
DeleteThis is Nigeria.
Very true about the influx of fake Titus fish in the market,my favorite fish,d real one has small eyes, dats how am able to differentiate.

Oh thank you for this explanation. People are making it seem like Chinese people are manufacturing their own mackerel and bringing into Nigeria. I was beginning to wonder how people can create a 'fake fish'
DeleteIf not for hubby, I don't like Titus
ReplyDeletePanla, croaker and Satin remains my best
I Love Croaker,but it's expensive.
DeletePeople still eat imported tinned fish? Please, let's put our health top priprty5when we eat tinned food.
ReplyDeleteI will stop buying Titus fish.
ReplyDeleteThey are of different species, and this is one of them.
ReplyDeleteThe "original titus" is really sweet, that is the only fish I like eating cos of the taste
Thank GOD , I have never been a fan of Fish and i hate that TituS.
ReplyDeleteanytime i feel like eating fish ,its Tilapia or cat fish to the rescue.
and also this fish called 'ego or obokun'.
Well as a cold room operator, I'll tell you the truth.
ReplyDeleteOriginal Titus is expensive now, only few market women request for it, majority goes for Kampala because it's cheap. They'll sell that Kampala at the rate of original Titus just to convince consumers and make more profit too.
Original per cartoon is 21k, while Kampala is 16-16800. They're actually two different fishes, you need to be able to differentiate them.
Note: Kampala is NOT bad for health as some of you are assuming here.
I sell fish for a living and I can tell you categorically that many people cannot afford the original, hence the need to buy the fake, only on special request do I buy the original, I bought the original and I ended up eating it because customers find it expensive, original is 23k while fake is 10,500
ReplyDeleteI will just stop buying titus fish for now
ReplyDeleteIt is not fake, but a different specie/variant of Mackerel. For example, you have the Atlantic salmon, the Pink salmon etc. They are all classified as salmon but different variants and naturally tastes differently
ReplyDeleteMy favorite fish.
ReplyDeleteI believe it’s a different variant.
ReplyDeleteThis two types of fishes has been in circulation in Nigeria since over 20yrs as far as I know, the assumes original one which has a silver shinny back, with whitish eye is called horse in a lay man's language it has more oil & tastes nicer than the other one, the brownish silver lining, with brown or clouded eyes is called mgbeke it less oily & has always been cheaper than the silver shinny one, both are mackerel species of fish but different types
