Slain Politician's Demand N200m From Hospital For Sharing His Dying Photo On The Social Media

The family of the late Hon. Temitope Olatoye Sugar have written a petition against the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, seeking N200 million damages for the sharing of the deceased’s ‘horrific’ photographs on social media without approval.

In the petition prepared by Barr. C. C. Amedu of Ikeh Sunday Chambers, Ibadan, copies of which were made available to journalists, Olatoye’s family accused the hospital of allowing the gory photographs of the late lawmaker in his dying hours at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital to be circulated on social media, thereby causing members of his family a lot of grief.

The petition was also sent to the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, and the Ibadan Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).

Though the family acknowledged that doctors and other members of staff attending to the late Sugar declared to themselves in the presence of Sugar’s family members that taking photographs of patients was prohibited, they were surprised to see such photographs circulating on online newspapers and social media hours later.

They posited that the trending online photographs have been serving as a painful reminder to Hon. Sugar’s gruesome murder.

The family added that they also subjected them to “a lasting unimaginable depression, mental and psychological torture.”

They insisted that the ICU of a hospital is a restricted area, hence only members of staff of the hospital had access to the dying Olatoye in the pool of his blood.

They demanded a written apology from the said members of staff which should be published in not least than three national newspapers.

Should the hospital fail to accede to the above request within seven days, the Olatoyes threatened to ‘commence an aggravated negligence action against the hospital in court.’

They reminded the UCH management of the Hippocratic oath, ethics and international best practices in the medical profession which protect the rights of a dying patient to die in peace and dignity and which also mandate medical practitioners to maintain utmost respect for human life, avoid using their privileges as medical practitioners to violate human rights and which also mandate them to practice the profession with conscience and dignity.

Describing the act as an unethical and brazen display of professional misconduct of the hospital’s staff, the Olatoyes also demanded the immediate recall of the published photographs from the public domain and punishment for the staff guilty of the offence.

    1. It won't bring him back but they will learn to give patients and their relatives privacy.50 staff were sacked because they accessed Jussie smollet files in the hospital.People should be held accountable for their actions.

    2. @Sharon that was an insensitive thing to say. It is not right. Nigerians can be irritating when it comes to certain things. Imagine, someone is dying and the next thing is snapping and circulating his pic.

I received the pictures twice on my WhatsApp and it got me thinking why are people always so excited in sending sad pics? The pictures left me in a sour mood now imagine if his family receives such, it will only aggravate her sadness.

    5. SMH... Madam the way you reason eh!!! It is very unethical and unprofessional of the hospital staff to release a dead man's pictures without the approval of the family.

Rest in peace. May God console the family.

    1. Highly unethical. Some people are insensitive to other people's pain. Can't imagine how his family must have felt seeing the viral pictures.

  6. I was in labour some years back and the pain was unimaginable. I was surrounded by nurses and a midwife then i realized that one nurse was either doing a video or taking pictures even though she tried to do it hiding somehow. i hurriedly marked her face and her tag. immediately i came out of labour room of course with my daughter,i reported her to their Chief DR who called her into my room and demanded she presents the phone for search. i saw about 7min video and some pictures. first of all,the Dr gave her a big slap and ceased her phone, gave the phone to me to delete all stuff. the nurse was suspended until further notice. PRIVACY IS PRIVACY!

    5. The doctor had no right to slap her though. I love the fact that you took note of her. Others I’m sure learnt from that.

  8. Nice one. The hospital should pay through their noses. This stupid hospital that killed my dad. He was in Ibadan for an official assignment and had an emergency. He was taken to this stupid UCH and they wasted so much time till he passed on. It hurts me so much because if any of us his children were with him in Ibadan we would have moved him straight to another hospital instead of the delay that led to him losing so much blood and dying.
