Emergency Room Series: - Self Medication

This is a must read!!!!

I keep saying it is important to know enough details about a drug before you take it. Even if you don’t have assess to the hospital sometimes when you feel ill, there are leaflets in medicine packs, those leaflets aren’t there to decorate the pack but for you to read and learn what and what not to do as regards a particular drug.

Not all medications that can be taken anyhow like paracetamol. You can even use the internet and not just make expensive assumptions.

A lady in her late teens was brought to the ER bleeding, she came with a guy that I assume was her boyfriend. With the presenting signs like bleeding for about two weeks, we thought it was a case of incomplete abortion or a miscarriage(her tummy was bloated). Her blood pressure had dropped critically low and her heart was beating so fast, trying to compensate for the blood she had lost. She could barely breath and had to be placed on oxygen.

She was attached to a monitor and blood samples were taken as well as samples for pregnancy test. The pregnancy test came back negative. We assumed it was because she had lost the “pregnancy’ because the hormones that are high in pregnancy could have dropped so low that the result would read negative so a consultant came with a portable scanner to check her uterus but it didn’t show signs of a previous or recent pregnancy.

The lady herself wouldn’t talk, she was groaning in pain and crying. Because of the pain, we couldn’t get information from her so we had to wait till the pain had subsided a bit. She had intravenous fluids and painkillers but the bleeding persistent. The doctors asked when last she saw her period and other questions and she said what was happening was her period. I felt she was not being honest so I asked if it was okay for her boyfriend to excuse us.

The bleeding was unusual for a cycle, it shouldn’t be so bad that the body would derail plus it had been going on for too long(almost two weeks). When asked if she took any s#x related or hormonal drug. She said she didn’t use any medication but only took morning-after pill two weeks before. She also said her period came early. When asked how many times she took the drug she said 3times on the same day to make sure it worked because she felt she was ovulating and didn’t want to get pregnant.

Three times ke? That’s like taking postinor 3 times on the same day(not because you were vomiting each dose). The body would go overdrive because it’s an overdose.

Clearly she had no idea of how the drugs worked and when the bleeding came, she simply assumed her period came early until it wouldn’t stop and made her dizzy and weak.

She felt the more she took, the more effective it would be.

The gynae doctor on-call came to see her and prescribed some hormonal drugs which she took and within 30minutes she felt a lot better.

She was given the option of blood transfusions because her blood level had dropped as well but she refused and said she was a jehova witness and she would be fine. The doctor then prescribed some medications she would take to boost her blood level. She was later admitted to the ward where She will also be seen by the s#xual health nurse who would give her health education, leaflets and contraceptive options to chose from so as to prevent future occurrences.

his is one of many cases where people use drugs anyhow. If you’re not sure of a drug, it’s better to look it up online before taking it. Do not use drugs for what it’s not meant for. I’ve heard of people who open tramadol capsules to sniff it , who grind up paracetamol and mix it in their beer!

Similar to this lady’s case, I’ve heard of people who try to use oral contraceptives to induce abortions, they take it with certain drugs, I won’t be going to that today. The message is clear, please do not abuse a drug, do not self medicate if you’re not sure of what you are taking. Drug abuse is sensitive and in as much as it’s rampant nowadays, it does lasting damages than the short good you think it does.

  2. Her faith is against blood transfusion but not against pre-marital sex and contraceptives, it's alright. Thank God for her life.

    1. Are you minding the Pharisee? Thank God she made it alive. I'm always careful about self medication. Even when it's that time of the month and it looks like the world is coming to an end, I'd rather endure the chronic pains than opt for medication. I can fear medicine sha.

  4. Me I'm almost a chemist due to magraine/tension headaches since I was 20 and I'm 30 now.
I'm on amitriptyline(a horrible drug cos of weight gain) and propranolol during the day. I was feeling okay with them for years but for like 2yrs now I'm always tired. I thought it was work stress but seems it's the drugs, done different test in hospital. I have also gone from a UK size 10 to a 14. People just shout when they see me not knowing it's my drugs. I diet and excercise and never able to loose more than 5kg.
Pls who has had experiences with migraines here. Mine are bad except I'm on these terrible drugs.
Doc recently changed me to Zoloft but I havnt even started. Trying to wean off amitriptyline which is hard for me as I can't sleep well without it.

    2. Save up money and go for MRI or CT Scan.
Meanwhile you can change your drug to cafegort.
It works very well on migraine and the effect is long lasting... takes months before you experience another one.

    4. Please check your blood pressure. I know it causes frequent headaches. Also try and increase your intake of fruits and vegetables and drink lots of water, avoid sugary drinks. You also need adequate sleep. I used to have such crazy headaches years ago.

    5. Anon 15.02 I have done MRI and CT scan twice. With the last being 2yrs ago and everything was fine.
Anon15.07 I also used them for about 8yrs with no problems and worked fine. I just started this weight gain 2yrs ago which my neurologist said it's a common side effect. My tiredness also started last year and it's also a side effect.
I'm generally tired of taking drugs.
I tried cafergot anon. I almost fainted. Maybe it isn't good for my system. Too strong maybe.
I have tried so many things God knows.

You'llitre suffer endless migraines if you're straining your eyes.

    9. I used to have migraine, though not as severe as yours. What significantlysignificantly helped was cutting my hair. I rock low cut so well, because it improved my health. Taking the pressure off my scalp worked for me to a great extent.

    10. Anon 17.30 I don't even do anything with my hair. I don't fix weave on or braid my hair because of the pressure. Just wash and wear my relaxed hair.

    11. What about botox?

      Delete
    12. I hAve heard botox is good but I'm in Nigeria and can't do such here for safety reasons.
I'm trying a new drug zoloft soon I hope it's helpful.
It isn't easy being on medication for 10yrs and I'm getting married next yr. All these drugs won't be good for pregnancy. But if I don't take them can't function cos of migraine attack.

    13. Anon I used to have a lot of migraine issues too. The doctor prescribed Cafergot which helped for a short while and the headaches later became worse. Thats a side effect of the drug, it makes the headaches worse after a while. What helped me was that I changed my pillows. I started using very flat pillows or none at all and the headaches dissappeared! Also trust God and stand on His word concerning healing. You rae healed in Jesus name.

    14. Hi @migraine lady, you need to hold off on the drugs and find out if your allergic to anything that may trigger d migraine. Mine is stress no matter how Lil during ovulation or menstrual time. Another trigger is milk during that time too.
Once it start try ice pack in a towel on your forehead, have your shades on, stay away from tv light , phone or computer light. Avoid talking becoz that is stress too.
Lastly talk to your maker (God)

We only teaches what the Bible says but we allow each person make his own choice. I'm 32 single and still a virgin. Because someone chose a wrong part dosent mean we are all bad

    ANG, where you at?

  13. I don't like the angle everyone is taking when clearly the message here is "don't abuse medication" but that's y'alls prerogative.

Her faith has nothing to do with her decision to have sex but sound awf..

  14. Which good malaria drug I need to take. Anyone recommend oo.

Shame on the lady for going against her faith. Thou shalt not fuck

  15. Even this morning after pills isn't meant to be taken anyhow and everytime one has unprotected sex, its called an emergency pill for a reason so people should learn not to abuse it cause it could be deadly. You will see girls that have sex five times in a month and they tend to take it all the time, its medically wrong.
